It wasnt luck the pilot was Robin Diez who was an ex-Titans pilot and they had the Byarlant suit in the facility for testing and weapon config experimentations. It’s about compatibility, if the socket/connection becomes outdated and is changed in later models, they can still pick up old weapons and use em. Also, minovsky particles would theoretically interfere somewhat.

Maybe the radar operator was a Zeon Remnant sleeper. Maybe the radar dish was hit first or destroyed by saboteurs. Idk but it would make sense to hit the Freddie lines of communications or radar before attempting an attack especially with the outdated forces the Zeon Remnants were deploying
If it wasn't for the Zaku I Sniper Type the Torington base attack would have being a flop as the base defense would be able to mobilize and push back all the attacker except the Waloo mobile Armor.
I think the idea was to detonate the power pack on the back of his suit and cause some kind of containment breach. Kind of like in the 8th MS team where the Federation sent mobile suit teams into the Zeon base hoping that one of the suits reactors would go off and vaporize the mountain.
