Thank you to all firefighters throughout the world for your service. Ive never needed it, but im planning to buy my own land soon and with global warming causing more and more disasters, i feel like the chance i might in the future is constantly increasing. Governments everywhere should be giving every person with the potential to become a firefighter, every opportunity to prove their worth and ability to so Maybe if incarcerated their background might mean they have to work a little harder to show they have changed, but that should never prevent any potential good firefighter from being given the opportunity to prove themselves and become one.
Im pretty sure if my home were burning or at risk of burning and my animals at risk, i would not give a flying f-k whether the firefighters who saved me had been in jail or not, only that they were angels who were willing to put themselves at risk to save us.
I think NZ should look at similar programs to ensure we don’t ever have a shortage of essential heroes/public servants like firefighters. Anyone who has a genuine desire to service in this way should be applauded not presented with obstacles (referring to the guy saying he had been trying for 4 years to become a public firefighter after already having 3 seasons in the camps. If there are lots of people like that they never should have needed to create a private firefighting service as they should have all been given the opportunity to join the service. Taxpayers aren’t paying for a short staffed fire service when there are people with potential and desire to serve who are unable to get a foot in the door to prove themselves.
Would be interesting to understand from the perspective of the public firefighting service why those people couldn’t get a job/internship? Was it a fear of hiring ex inmates? Or red tape making it difficult for anyone who wanted to hire to actually hire anyone with a criminal record? Or something else?

This is incredible! My son is currently serving his time at a fire camp in Susanville and he’s applied and hoping to get accepted to VTC program for further fire fighting training. He loves what he’s learned and ready to be a responsible adult that can be a contribution to society.
Keep up the awesome opportunity for all those wanting to make a positive change for their future.

Tell him to go to reedley college when he gets out. They have one of the best Wildland fire training programs and gets you all your certs and the mentorship is amazing. Connections with a ton of hot shot crews and different agencies.

Its great they are finally getting a chance at fire fighting after camp in custody. Going to prison is supposedly about "rehabilitation", these are people that still want to serve the public in the highest way so let them try.

Imagine how many we wouldn’t imprison if they had any opportunity at all.

Thats the thing we as a society need to fix, no one should grow up feeling they had no real opportunity or chances to achieve a good life. Sadly even though I am lucky enough to be someone who has grown up with the opportunities and without any prejudice for myself personally, it feels like this world is run by a group of people who either don’t care about changing things - aside from saying the right stuff but not really doing anything, through to people who actively don’t want things to change for people at the bottom of the hill when it comes to opportunity and perception of their value or status in society.
Occasionally you get someone in a position of power who makes some really outstanding changes, but it often seems to be one single person in a position of power who is actively going against the crowd. Others make a lot of talk about changing things but actually do little or nothing which has any impact, or if they do its only because those few people who are rich and powerful and actually give a sh-t shame or encourage the others to do something.
People talk about how we all need to stand up to change the world and maybe we do..
But at the end of the day a small few have 90% of the power and wealth of the world, and nothings going to change until those small few are forced to change or change makers enter their circle and do it for them. And who knows, maybe great power and wealth do corrupt so that by the sheer fact of being powerful and wealthy, a person is less likely to care about those at the bottom of the heap and much less motivated to do anything for them?
