ARMY often refers to this song as The Queen of BTS’ discography.

This track has charted non stop in Korea since it was release 2017…
It is a song that conveys the nature of “Han” a Korean concep embodying grief loss nostalgia but also anger and resentment…
For a true interpretation of the MV’s symbology you should watch the video by Italian army… if you don’t fancy weeping on camera, do it on your own…..
There are many more tie ins to the MV … even Liverpool FC.. and hillsborough 1989….
The song was originally written by rm and Suga about the loss of old friends but they used the MV to express their anger towards the corrupt government of Park geun hye, who was eventually impeached convicted and sent to jail… it is the brilliant work of LUMPENS, under Choi Yong seok, the production house responsible for almost all their videos,,, BTW at the time artists and journalists were blacklisted for even mentioning Sewol….

The Sewol Ferry disaster was terrible... it ended up bringing down the president of Korea, the arrests and imprisonments of government officials, the dissolution of their Coast Guard. The students were on a field trip.
The song is still on the top 100 song chart in Korea. It came out in early 2017 and has not left the chart yet.

I said this to allonsyyy too, but I really wish you both would have watched the Italian Army version of the explanation video. It's less speculative and more about what happened and what parts of the video directly support the widely held belief that this video is connected to the tragedy.
But I still enjoyed your reactions! Spring Day is our queen and she's a special one.

I also heavily suggest watching Italian ARMY’s explanation video, it’s much more in depth and has a lot more details regarding the tragedy and the symbolism tied to it. The one you watched is pretty speculative with not much detailed explanation compared to the one I recommended. Please give it a go!
If you want to know more about the tragedy itself, check out Rotten Mango’s video about the Sewol or The New Yorker’s documentary.

The New Yorker video on the Sewol Ferry Tragedy is one of the best. Very in depth with real pictures, real people, real video footage. Another amazing, very in depth description is Rotten Mango's sewol ferry video. Both are tons better than the Italian army one

The song is about loss, and we can interpret that as some kind of relationship or death. Suga's verse, I believe, is about the loss of a very close friendship, that he raps about in "Dear My Friend" on his D-Day album.
The MV is specifically about the ferry tragedy. The explanation video you watched was one of the first, if not the first, to come out after the MV. There are more symbols--the clock on the wall when the ferry went under, the phrase "You Never Walk Alone" on the carousel is a song from the musical Carousel that is sung after a character dies.
Other's have mentioned Italian ARMYs explanation. She gives more context to the tragedy and makes more connections to the MV. You do not need to do a reaction, but I would appreciate it if you watch it even away from camera. BTS and BigHit took a risk to put out this MV.
What is NOT included in the explanation videos...
The tragedy happened in 2014. The government interferred with rescue operations, downplayed the tragedy, told parents to get over it, and had the press lable them as deranged and money-seekers. The government was also involved in the coverup of the corruption that led to the tragedy. In December 2016,impeachment proceeding against Korean President Park began. By February 2017, people in all sectors had joined the parents' protests (Yellow Ribbon Movement). Park clamped down with arrests, more media propaganda, and laws against saying anything negative about the government. Celebrities were attacked with negative articles and accused of things that hurt their reputations. People were fired from their jobs. BTS and the company never commented on the meaning of the MV. Jin comes close in late 2020, when an interviewer asks if it is a bout a specific sad event. Jin responds, “It is about a sad event, as you said, but it is also about longing,”

I think people have a big misunderstanding of the political climate when Spring Day came out. BigHit and BTS weren't taking any risk to put this MV out when they did. The president was impeached already and it was pretty certain she was going to jail soon. The whole country was celebrating her impeachment. There was NO backlash to be given, only celebration if BTS were specific about the MV. It's more likely they didn't speak directly on it because BTS has always spoken through music rather than words, also to able to support and lift the movement without taking away attention from it.

The explanation by Italian Army provides a lot more depth and info about what happened, and exactly how the mv relates to it, so I hope you will give that a watch as well. This explanation is goof as well, but yeah... definitely not as in-depth, and I feel lacks a lot of info that Italian Army provides. Her video is titled "What you still don't know about BTS Spring Day" if you want to know more. Just be prepared that it is genuinely extremely emotional and upsetting to watch. Thanks for the reaction 💜

Three hundred and four people died, 250 of them kids. The captain and most of the crew changed out of their uniforms into civilian clothes so that they could escape without acknowledging their responsibility. Also recommend viewing explanations by an Italian Army or by Rotten Mango.

What you STILL DON’T KNOW about BTS DPRING DAY MV by Italian army is the BEST explanation video. It is an incredibly hard watch with real video footage and news reports. She explains all the symbolism in the video, the public reactions and the backlash some artists received. This video directly shows and proves the type of people BTS are and the risks they are willing to take for what is right.

A full explaination of the Sewol disaster can be got from Italian ARMY which also gives a great deal of surrounding detail. However Rotten Mangoes Sewol Ferry is in English but does not pick up details in in the song its purely about the disaster. The Rusty Merry-go-round has You'll never Walk Alone. A song used by the Hillsborough Disaster campaign who came out in support of the Sewol Ferry parents as both disasters families struggled to find answers why their loved ones died.... so Italian ARMYS explaination is far more detailed.

Not to take away from Spring Day, because no other song can be The Queen, but BTS has a lot of beautiful songs. Here is a non exhaustive list of some of BTS’ most beautiful songs: The Truth Untold, Jamais Vu, Zero O’Clock, Butterfly, House of Cards, Your Eyes Tell, Crystal Snow, Blue and Gray, even Louder than Bombs I would still classify as beautiful. And of course I’m forgetting a lot. Maybe other ARMYs could fill in the blanks of my memory. There are also a lot of beautiful BTS solo songs. Still so much content for you to enjoy! I’m kind of jealous

I am so glad you included Louder Than Bombs. It's one of my favourites, but often seems over looked. Which is sad, because it is a beautiful, powerful, song than, that tugs on both your heartstrings and your nerves. It can be unsettling, but it's beauty is undeniable.
I agree with the rest of the songs on your list, but I would include two more. Magic Shop, and Mikrokosmos. Both warm songs, full of hope, and the promise of a gentle connection. They remind us that we are not - cannot be - alone; for we are all part of something greater. And that we are beautiful and unique individuals. But our light does not shine alone - we are specks of starlight in the awe-inspiring beauty of the Kosmos. Unique and shining threads woven into the tapestry of eternity.

BTS was not a huge success at that time and anyone who was criticizing the government at that time (Artists, actors, singers any one in entertainment) was put on a Black List. Pretty much ending their careers. BTS and their company at the time donated to the families whose loved ones were killed. They did so anonymously.

Shame you didn't watch the Italian Army explanation as it is a far better explanation than the others, which actually miss a lot! If it's because it's longer, Army will watch it despite the length! I can't say how many times I've seen it! In a way, it's our anthem!

Spring Day has never been out of the charts in S Korea. The Sewol Disaster corruption brought down the last Conservative government so you can bet the present Conservative government are not too pleased about that. So though the lyrics are not about sewol the mv is layered with reference after reference for instance the clock in the launderette is the time the ferry finally went down with all the children on board.

I suggest that you watch a doco for the Sewol Ferry Disaster. There are several on TH-cam, but I watched the New Yorker one. It's a hard one to watch, but I highly recommend it. In fact, I've only seen one channel react to it, so I would like to see your reaction to it. Spring Day is a very special song for ARYMs and South Koreans in particular, and as at 12 August 2024, it has remained on Melon's daily chart, for an incredible 2738 consecutive days, the longest run in Melon's history.

As others have said that explanation was quite minimal and didn't reveal the magnitude of the unnecessary tragedy or the corruption behind it. I agree that the Italian ARMY video is good for connecting SPRING DAY mv to the events, but the New Yorker's and Rotten Mango's documentaries add even more understanding and pathos.
Please raise up the video screen from the bottom of the window so we can read the CC, especially when paused to catch up and
*give more time for yourself and us to read the explanation text* . Italian ARMY's video is also mostly text for English speakers.
