Worked down there on the switchboard whilst in the WRNS during 70's when the underground was still operational. Those stairs were a killer every single time !!!!
Hell of a bunker, lady and gentlemen! Despite being fascinated with manmade subterranean structures for years, I'm still surprised at what still exists down there. This is a real eye-opener. Thanks for sharing!
You know guys,you could make a full movie or maybe a few movies as your filming is now so professional,on average most step's are 6" deep and i lost count at 130 something,BIG thank you for everything going out and sharing your days
What fascinates me is what did they use to bore or blast that many tunnels and how much time were they given from the point in time when there was a need and then the actual use ? To me I just cannot get my head around all the labor and time and possibly loss of life tunneling like they did. Never hit gas veins, water veins, prehistoric animals just mind boggling.
The way the stairs where constructed was to lessen a direct hit at the entrance. The thinking went, those cut outs on each landing that carried on past the ninety degree turn, would give an all be it small place, a place for the shock wave to slow down and redirect. It's along the same reasoning the stairs turn 90 degrees as many times before you get to the bottom.
Great video, I visited the tunnels in the summer - it's an amazing place. FYI, the NATO communication Centre was planned for the tunnels but never fully commissioned, it was eventually built in the parade ground of the fort above.
Blimey u'll be very fit after all those stairs. Amazing WW2 underground tunnels. It looks like from your visit that the underground tunnels are massive. You wont want to climb stairs anymore.
I think the areas that were bricked up might've either been failed expansions, areas where the engineers felt perhaps wise to not venture due to a fault in the rock, OR, they might be relief for what's beneath, tho, i cannot be 100% (frankly not even 50%) sure on the last one because i don't quite get the 3D map unless i visit. BUT, that's a tunneling practice, it's also a structure practice. Used from the pyramid of Khufu all the way to NY Metro.
That was excellent as ever. Just one question, why wouldn't the MOD allow lagging on the pipes? Why not? And if so why was there remains of lagging evident on the piping down there?
You know, i wonder how deep goes the deepest bunker in the world, because there's considerations you have to take with these things, like heat, air, compression, structure. And the work, you can hide a regular bunker's work with the old 'build-a-hotel-on-top' trick, but what about something that goes sooo deep, no conceivable building would take that long.
11:50: - That newspaper on the stairway with the headline 'The Clock Struck Nine' shows a picture of a prison. I think that the story is about an execution at that prison. The other piece of magazine, dated 1955, made me think, that the headline story, about an execution, which were generally performed at 9 am., at a time when such things were common, might have been a celebrated case which had caused such consternation in the country - that of Ruth Ellis, convicted of shooting her lover. There were a lot of people who said that she should not hang, but she was, and was the last woman to be hanged in England.
Do you think one day in the future you will explore on mainland europe for like a special series of episodes ? :) (I know you have for France) there are many sorts of cold war era remnants in east germany built by DDR for example !

That's insaine. How many hundreds of feet down are those tunnels. That steel is old. Really looks like it's bending under stress.

I think the deepest bunker in the world is here in the US, and it is reported that they have aliens imprisoned at its lowest point.
