    Mike Garson has said there isn't a week goes by when he doesn't get asked about that piano solo. On the first few takes he played it quite straight until Bowie asked him to go more avant garde. The final version was done in one take.

    I would recommend checking out The Rolling Stones, for example their classic hit "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction", i think you won't regret it! ❤

    Love you pushing in the phones to get the total manic nuttiness of the track.
    Bowie blows everything away, this was the 70s, all played live, no computer, jazz, rock, pop, insanity.
    Brilliant.

    As you know by now Pope, Bowie albums are an eclectic mix of songs. I love that every musician he has worked with gets a chance to shine in their own right, as in the case of this song with Mike Garson showing his jazz playing chops! I played this album to death when I first got it in 1973 and I enjoy it as much now. So glad you're reacting to this. "Drive In Saturday" comes after this song and is, as you'd expect, very different to the last one, so I hope you check it out next!. Stay the cool dude you are my friend, till next time, peace.✌😺

    Stunning track! Love that crazy piano !!!!!!!! A lad insane, and so is the piano. Reminds me a lot of his last album (full circle) - you get him - even though his lyrics here are pretty abstract. A true artist.

      In Blackstar I hear references to most of his iconic tracks, also obvious in the video's for Lazarus and blackstar. A very fitting swansong.

    Especially in this era of his career, Aladdin Sane, Diamond Dogs, Station To Station, Bowie was a master of intentional dissonance, music and vocals. I was a teenager, had just gotten my driver's license and thankfully had a big sister who let me take her car from our hometown, Memphis, to Nashville and New Orleans to see Bowie live every time he was in any of those 3 cities. His performances were eerie and surreal, hypnotizing, and absolutely unforgettable-- with lots of literally hands-on audience interaction, back in the day when us fans could go right up to the foot of the stage to watch. Loving your Bowie reactions-- if I could time travel I'd gladly take you back to one of those shows.

    Before I listen (for perhaps the hundredth time) to this song, I beg you listen to the guitar. Mick Ronson is best known for his searing soloing and crunchy riffs - but here he uses his mastery of tone and technique to emphasis the piano and vocal. This song is a masterpiece of vertiousity by David, Ronno, and Mike Garson.

  • @wpollock1
    @wpollock1 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Such an underrated album. Bowie called it "Ziggy Goes to America" the album has the location of each song listed on the back of the album - Aladdin Sane was listed as Ellinis which is a cruise line since Bowie took ships from England to America instead of planes due to a fear of flying. Watch That Man was "New York", Panic in Detroit was "Detroit", etc. Mike Garson is a god on this album. If you want to hear more Garson, "Lady Grinning Soul" is a ballad that is fire! Last song on the album.

    Bowie conceived and performed his music in the guise of a series of characters. A true artist -- songwriter, singer, guitarist, painter, sculptor, actor.... Immensely talented and in many ways, visionary. This album followed Ziggy Stardust and the cover picture is his Ziggy makeup. Alladin Sane (A Lad Insane) was the end of Ziggy. His next major character was the Thin White Duke, during his Berlin period mid to late 70's.

    Later in his life, David said the lightening bolt represented a fountain of tears for the condition of the human race (constantly at war, Racism, poverty, disease, starvation, etc.). I believe this is the true meaning. Iman (his wife and now his widow) said the same about David's use of the lightning bolt.

    David Bowie threw himself a 50th Birthday Party at MSG in 1997. Many artists who were influenced by 👨‍🎤 came out and played with 👨‍🎤. Please pick any song but Hallo Spaceboy with the Foo Fighters is just crazy. And if anyone knows the name of Dave Grohl’s chiropractor, please post😂

    @suz5862 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Disappointed you did not get it. 😔The track is about sending young men to war. The album was released in 1973 on the back of the US bombing blitz of Vietnam. More bombs were dropped by the US in one day than during its entire involvement in the Second World War. At the time there was a real threat of another world war. The song speaks to the slaughter of 2 previous generations who either enlisted or were conscripted into war. The lyrics juxtaposed their hope with the ultimate depravity. Indeed the track listing on the album refers to the respective years before the start first and second world wars - (1913-1938-197?).

    What is insane? "Millions weep a fountain, just in case of sunrise" -- that's religion, isn't it? All the guilt and shame and sorrow people feel so that they can keep the Commandments, re-enact the Passion, in the slim hope that there will be a sunrise for them after they die - and the young man who sees all this without self-deception, does that make him crazy? And in that case, who will love him, who will love a lad insane?
