My daughter just had my second granddaughter a few days ago. So now I’ve got a new one to spoil and watch your videos with. Glad to see the old 63 getting worked on, let’s me know I need to check some things on my ‘66 pickup.
This would be the best time to take a road trip in the fall as all the trees and hill's start to change colors. Spring and fall is my favorite time for a road trip not to hot not to cold. The over heating is less chance unless there is a heating cooling problem. I remember traveling with my Pop's going down into Baja California down in old Mexico way. Driving through the desert in the summer depending on a gas station to be open for gas in a 1979 GMC VAN with NO panalonling all metal inside! in 1980. Pop's did make a seat belt net on the sliding side door so we could leave it open with the hot desert wind blowing in. Any how the gas station was closed and said no gas on the pumps! We were shit out of luck. Pop's took a chance and said we are going to drive on to the next city Insadada? It was still hour's away driving through the desert. When we got to the top of the hill and I could see the Ocean and the CITY of Insadada! It brought a smile to my young 10 year old face that we are safe from the hot desert sun! As we were going down the hill this old Mon in a horse drawn coverd wagon with ponies pulling the coverd wagon, ponies wearing straw hat's. I was like where is that old Mon going into the desert!! we just came outta from? When we pulled into the gas station a bunch of kids ran up to the van they wanted to wash the window's for pesos. Pop's wanted to see if the van would start back up when he turn the key to off when he pulled up to the pumps. The van was under "E" Pop's was driving on fumes only. Pop's turn the key off it didn't start back up so the tank was on fumes only. It started after it got filled up. Pop's pushed the limite on the brand new van he bought from the Genral MOTORS PLANT. He got a deal from my uncle that has work there for year's Pop's bought a plane's jane GMC RED van with nothing just a radio with 8 track heating/cooling with 2 seats. Years later he customised the inside with shag carpet what they did in the 1970s and 80s branch seats that had storage and turn into a bed. Pop's took that van on many family vacations rebuilt the engine once. Couple of transmission. 20 or more year's later Pop's ended up donating the van to a farm worker's that could use it.
Food for thought 🤔... Next time stop at O'Reilly and Barrow the Big C clamp kit 4 Ball Joints and the Spring Compressor kit, They will save you a Hole 🕳 Lot of Cussing... Keep On Keeping On... You Do A Great Job 👍 👏 😊
Hey Ken, i haven't forgot about the little guy, 54K subs, lol, your still as humble as you ever was and always will be, the brace bar looks like it does the trick, good preventative measure, those A s arms are real chore but worth it, good long day out in the shop, all those new parts look good, hope the disk brakes fit the stock wheels, it's all going to turn out great
Your videos has always been my favorites to watch because you aren't a stick in the mud as I call it you have fun and show your mistakes and tell what you should of done but everytime you make a video with that slick beautiful SS of course I got to watch no matter what time it is
Never used a press to change control arm bushings, just a vice and an air chisel....found a lot of wore out parts on my alignment rack in the garage....I may be the last person in NC to bend I-beams on old fords to change the camber....5 ton porta power. Note....Waylon in high school i did some rose bush grafts on some of moms rode bushes and the next few years it produced some beautiful and unusual roses. I just turned 70, sold my shop, alignment rack and even my radiator vat and tools. I just had a belly full, now I spend most days on the lake and jam a bit with friends on my old Stratocaster.
Love your videos started watching in 2017 while in Tri-Cities Washington in the hospital you helped me indure 7 months of medical torture thanks keep it up.
sorry you had to go through that.. I think you emailed me or commented about that.. either it was you or several of my subscribers wind up in the hospital haha
Looks like ya got a lot done, Ken.. Way to go! By the way... I hit the like button before I even watch the video so as not to forget.... and I encourage all the rest of the folks to do the same.... Take care, Ken. Russ
If you have only worked for 12 hours, you just put in half of a days work! ( slacker) when you drop something you are testing gravity, you never know if it will stop working so it must be constantly tested! Love you and what you do!!
Your tools are extensions of your hands. Never ceases to amaze me to watch the finesse you have working on cars. You take the time to get it done right, and if you mess up, you giggle and fix it. The way it should be
You're doing a fine job Ken! That ol' chevy will drive like a Cadillac. When you started dropping things at the beginning of the video, I said, I'm glad I'm not the only one who drops things. Sometimes I throw it on the floor first thinking there, I've already dropped it. Keep up the great videos and showing us the goods and bads of wrenching.
About proportioning valves, the only word of caution I can give you is I have been told that disc brakes require different fluid pressure from drum brakes and that valve is adjusted accordingly to equalize front and rear brake force as you apply brakes. That proportioning valve you have may give you an undesired brake force up front if you keep drum brakes. Not sure who you can ask on that because nobody in my big city seems to know anything about a car more that 20 years old. Good luck and liking the content.
Master cylinders for drum brakes usually have a small valve on the outlet to maintain a SLIGHT pressure in the brake lines to keep the slave cups expanded slightly. They do on British cars anyway, The slight pressure works against the shoe return springs without moving them to any significant degree. I upgraded a Triumph Herald twin leading shoe wheel cyl system to a Spitfire disc system and had to remove the small valve which was mounted on the end of the master cyl return spring. (This system was NOT on a Triumph car) I retained the valve on the separate master cyl which operated the rear drum brakes. Best wishes from Australia to Waylon and all his fans
Best video on TH-cam! Had a 63 Chevy Impala SS. So many things I wanted to do. Instead I sold it and regretted everyday. Pretty Red thing with a 409 in it. I think it was white originally. I'm gonna get another one and go through it!
KEN ! Thanx, Great video and excellent inside tricks for doing a difficult job. I bet your channel has a BIG INFLUX of subscribers just to watch you on the road. Yes SIR ! It's gonna be fun for all us that are at home watching you take your "DREAM TRIP" cross country !
Like a lot of other folks, I hit the like button before I watch the video, Ken. Cool to see the family with ya, that is worth more than all the gold in the world, IMHO. I will be curious to find out the answer on the brakes clearing the stock wheels. I understand you want to stay with the 14's, I'd be fighting myself both ways on that call. And..I just last week had to buy a roll of wire fer my MIG. 30 lbs I think was $175 less the .gov cut. Nuts.
I got into same mess with my 64 chevelle ss. Had pristine ss hubcaps so I wanted to stay with 14s.Well I received disc's from OPG and they wouldn't clear my 14"s.I went ahead and used them and put 15"s Rally wheels. What a quantity, I still regret that decision!
That 63 is ready for another 40 years of service and I'd say it would go anywhere you want it to, I'm sure you know but I'll say it anyway, the proportioning valves on those brakes are different from drum to drum and disk to drum, I believe that disk brakes require more fluid than drums and running the both straight from the master cylinder could cause the rear to lock up on slick roads, but do your own research about that, great work on that beautiful car, she's definitely a keeper 😉
I did a similar disk brake conversion on a 1970 LeMans. The rotors fit the 14in Poncho rally wheels with no issue. I would imagine the inside dimensions are similar to the Chevy steelies. It was probably a different brand of kit though. I can’t say about the master, the one I got was the earlier style and looked like the dual pot that came on the car. I did fiddle with the proportioning valve some but got it where I was really happy with the swap.
I did the front disc brake conversion on my son’s ‘62 Impala. The stock 14” wheels wouldn’t clear the caliper , but G body 14” wheels do fit. That’s we did, and the stock hub caps fit too,
I've rebuilt many frontends in my home garage and have a Harbor Freight 20 ton press and I have done some really rusted front ends and usually I just drill through those rivets and then chisel them off. I have never thought about welding a bar for support, thanks for the tip.
Thanks Waylon Wire That's a great upgrade will make it even nicer to drive. Glad you got some quality time with the family. Central California watching
There is a slight chance that the 14 inch rims from a G body will work. Early 80's had disc brakes and 14 inch rims. These would be the monte carlo, etc. I did not have discs on my 64 impala, but I did run the G body rims with stock hub caps. They did sit out just a little farther in the wheel well so there is a chance they might clear.
hard task rebushing A arms, did it once on my 46, was wishing I had a hyd press but the good old vise stepped up for it. removing those nice rubber ones with a torch (nasty) but it worked.
Hey Waylon on a duel resivor master cylinder the resivor closet to the firewall is for the front brakes and the other one to the front is for your rear brakes that's why your front brakes apply first and does most of your braking . Keep up the good work love all your cars and trucks .
Don't forget the little m/cylinder line pressure thingy that differs from discs to drums. Not blowing smoke, from a 71 year old mechanic. I'm still reeling from doing lower inners on a '59 Chev too.
@@1963impala2drWaylonWire Different beast, mate. I mean the m/cyl has a (2, if full drum application) residual line pressure valve. 4 wheel drum brakes need it so the brake springs don't pull the wheel cyl seals in, thereby making a low pedal on first application. Front discs don't need it, as the seal 'rolls' the piston back, keeping a firm pedal. Said valve comes out with a sheet screw, for a front disc setup. Clear as mud :) Cheers, from New Zealand.
After watching your video last week, I watched Dennis Collins Coffee walk. He was rescuing a 63 Chevy Impala. So on his channel, (300k views) I mentioned Watching You and your 63. Left a link to Your video. Hope You gain some viewers from that.
Hi Ken, About the disk brakes, I know this is a radical thought, and as you said you have all 5 wheels and tyres at the donut shop, surely it is worth either calling them and getting them to run a tape messages over the dimensions needed for fitment of the discs and rotors, or driving down yourself and bringing one back Or maybe going to the manufacturers Web page and see what the Specs are on your particular disc's etc are? In the long run for better stopping and easier servicing the time spent now will save much in the future. Good to see the underside of the impala for a change. Tony from Western Australia 🇦🇺
do you really think I didn't fit my wheels to the rotors..c'mon man... lol yes I took the rotors and calipers to the tire shop and test fit them. and it seemed they would work. stay tuned
@@1963impala2drWaylonWire I only caught your video this morning Ken (Friday 29th) who knows what you got up to in my past, your time travelling right now to your future when you talk to me 🤔😁(+8.00 hours) Tony
You just need stock 14" disc rims, but you'll want to run 4 of them if the offset is different. If you go back to drum, you need to bypass the proportioning/combination valve. Just connect directly to the master cylinder. The single master cylinder systems are already designed to compensate by wheel cylinder size and brake shoe size. I don't know where the T'd the brake lines on that car, but you'll need a plug for the T when you run the new lines for the front. I did a video on that with the 57 GMC, but she's just not the same!
haha.. you're about a week late brother! everyone tells me what rims I need but nobody tells me they have some. I know what I need.. I just dont have time to chase them down. but have no fear.. Ol Waylon will come out on top! lol
Let me give you a word of caution based on my recent experience, Waylon. I recently did a disc brake conversion on my 1964 Plymouth. The kit came with Timken bearing sets. The new rotors already had bearing races installed. I decided to pop them out and use the Timken matched races. Good thing! The races in the rotors where simply marked "CHINA" with no part numbers. I read horror stories from others online about the chinese races flaking apart after just a couple thousand miles. So, you might want to check that out before you put everything together...
I'm a Timken bearing man from way back I always trusted there products! The majority of the things from China is GARBAGE! I wouldn't trust Chinese parts on a American made skateboard ! 🇺🇲 Keep it American! 🇺🇲
Glad you did those shafts yourself. So many people want to make it a throw away world these days and that is wasteful. Those shafts and arms are good ol' North American made for sure! And no waste and need to make replacements.
It sure does look nice! You are knocking it out. Worst case can’t you just steal the wheels off your half ton pickup. I would think it’s the same bolt pattern. It may not be gorgeous but it would make the trip.😎 Drum drum master cylinders are made to deliver the correct volume for the wheel cylinders. Drum disk master cylinders tend to be made out of balance so more volume is given to the drums and more pressure to the disks. Can you mix up parts yes. Will it work yes. Will it give optimal performance probably not.
@@1963impala2drWaylonWire I'd do it in a heartbeat mate, I just today went through all the channels I'd subscribed to over the years 192, I whittled them down to 64 I kept yours for now ;) ;)
Good show brother btw drift away would be a good winter song to do lol,I love your level playing field content,I've stopped watching some of the super stars that I started when they started with a shade tree and a crescent wrench, there was one that replaced engine parts and signed old ones and everyone that bought a tee shirt would be in a drawing,I want a autograph from Merle haggard not Mr.Goodpliers, another says if I sign up to his sponsor I can get 99.99% off a prewar Martin lol just jokin, keep it up buddy
I remember a video from Mortske repair where he mentioned that if you have drums all around and dual brake reservoir the chambers are the same size, but if disks in front then the front reservoir will be larger, I don't know the reason why but must be something to do with proportioning.
Hey my man, you can get steel reproductions of original style wheels in larger sizes and beauty ring adapters for the original hub caps,a little pricey but hey you really need those disc brakes, just got to do it once and you'll be happy
I hope I'm not just blowing smoke lol but saying that and all things being equal this is just my opinion and you know we all have one but it looks to me like the rotors are made with enough offset to keep your rims from hitting on the caliper just my unbiased opinion I really do hope they work out for you they would be a huge improvement to your stopping power good luck my friend and may the greasy gods look upon you and smile I know I always do.
Unfortunately if your going to stay with the 14 inch rims you have to keep the drums, My chevelle accepted 1970 disc brakes and I liked them so much that I recently added rear discs but I changes to 15 inch wheels. The dual master will work with drums and actually I believe you usually have to shorten the pushrod to get it to work. and if the dual is not a four drum set up you might have to add an adjustable proportioning valve. Happy wrenching.
If the calipers do rub the rim, you can remove a small amount of the casting to give clearance. I'm not saying to hog-off a bunch, just reshape it some with a lit grind sort of like polishing the metal. Plenty safe enough to do. Other option would be 15" rims, but you've already bought the 14" tires.
oh I'm well acquainted with a flap wheel! lol.. I checked today.. i think its going to work.. yeah 15s or 14s off an S10.. but I cant find any and im running out of time
If you measure the drum height from the center of the hub to the outside and the center of the hub to top of caliper will let you know the height difference In NZ, our GM based equivalent of the era ran disc brake on 14 " wheels without issue and the only problem with running a dual master for disc/drum will be the extra pressure going to the front drums as always love your content Grub NZ

21:10 you might want to replace that long length of fuel hose with a steel line and some short pieces. The engine fan will really work over that hose at engine speed for a long time. Would hate to see it cause an issue.
I’m guessing the bushings on these type of control arms cannot be replaced without a press huh? Great video and by the way, I like your style of working and talking mess 😂 😂 😎
Yeah I finally got my bushings on, I had tried to chisel a couple out but my neighbor took over the job and finished the rest. Thanks for the reply back. How’s your impala handling?

Hey Waylon on a duel resivor master cylinder the resivor closet to the firewall is for the front brakes and the other one to the front is for your rear brakes that's why your front brakes apply first and does most of your braking . Keep up the good work love all your cars and trucks .
Thanks for the info
Did front disk on my 66 GTO. Had to use the later Rally 2 wheels in 14 inch. to fit over the 69 to 72 GM mid size disk and rotors.
Depends on the wheel on the back side. Rally 1's are different and don't work with disk.
Thanks Waylon!
Don't forget the little m/cylinder line pressure thingy that differs from discs to drums. Not blowing smoke, from a 71 year old mechanic. I'm still reeling from doing lower inners on a '59 Chev too.
I was going to mention the same thing.
I thought I mentioned the proportioning valve..
@@moyadapne968 uh... ok i guess
I would run 15's you will love it and the ride is fantastic
You're going to love those disc brakes.
Another great video 👍👍🇨🇱
After watching your video last week, I watched Dennis Collins Coffee walk. He was rescuing a 63 Chevy Impala. So on his channel, (300k views) I mentioned Watching You and your 63. Left a link to Your video. Hope You gain some viewers from that.
thank you
Keep up the good work I'm sure everyone enjoys 😉 your videos especially with the Square body trucks
All those new parts and a tire balance will take the shimmy out of that old chivvalay.
Hi Ken,
About the disk brakes, I know this is a radical thought, and as you said you have all 5 wheels and tyres at the donut shop, surely it is worth either calling them and getting them to run a tape messages over the dimensions needed for fitment of the discs and rotors, or driving down yourself and bringing one back
Or maybe going to the manufacturers Web page and see what the Specs are on your particular disc's etc are?
In the long run for better stopping and easier servicing the time spent now will save much in the future.
Good to see the underside of the impala for a change.
Tony from Western Australia 🇦🇺
do you really think I didn't fit my wheels to the rotors..c'mon man... lol yes I took the rotors and calipers to the tire shop and test fit them. and it seemed they would work. stay tuned
@@1963impala2drWaylonWire I only caught your video this morning Ken (Friday 29th) who knows what you got up to in my past, your time travelling right now to your future when you talk to me
🤔😁(+8.00 hours)

Good Job Waylon
Glad you did those shafts yourself. So many people want to make it a throw away world these days and that is wasteful. Those shafts and arms are good ol' North American made for sure! And no waste and need to make replacements.
I fell out of my chair laughing @1:54. Great video as always, thanks for sharing!
Enjoy your new car! Because I know she's gonna drive like one!
Will it give optimal performance probably not.
i have lots of master cylinders. impala is 5x4 3/4 trucks are 5x5
I've never understood why you don't have over 1m subs Ken.
i guess you didn't share my videos with a 1m people haha
@@1963impala2drWaylonWire I'd do it in a heartbeat mate, I just today went through all the channels I'd subscribed to over the years 192, I whittled them down to 64 I kept yours for now ;) ;)
Good show brother btw drift away would be a good winter song to do lol,I love your level playing field content,I've stopped watching some of the super stars that I started when they started with a shade tree and a crescent wrench, there was one that replaced engine parts and signed old ones and everyone that bought a tee shirt would be in a drawing,I want a autograph from Merle haggard not Mr.Goodpliers, another says if I sign up to his sponsor I can get 99.99% off a prewar Martin lol just jokin, keep it up buddy
going to be hard to get an autograph from ol Merle now. .haha.. thanks Wayne
I am glad that bottle jack didn’t fall out on your head
It will all fit .. if it don't, you will engineer it to work .. I have full confidence. Haha plus it's not me doing the dang work 🙃.. thank u sir
I remember a video from Mortske repair where he mentioned that if you have drums all around and dual brake reservoir the chambers are the same size, but if disks in front then the front reservoir will be larger, I don't know the reason why but must be something to do with proportioning.
exactly
Ken, you get much skinnier I may have to send you a roll of quarters. Them winds back in Okie and Arky land will blow you away.
That thang is going to ride sweet! It sure is a Nice ride!
Hey my man, you can get steel reproductions of original style wheels in larger sizes and beauty ring adapters for the original hub caps,a little pricey but hey you really need those disc brakes, just got to do it once and you'll be happy
oh I can get some s10 wheels or others but I dont have time to chase them down
I hope I'm not just blowing smoke lol but saying that and all things being equal this is just my opinion and you know we all have one but it looks to me like the rotors are made with enough offset to keep your rims from hitting on the caliper just my unbiased opinion I really do hope they work out for you they would be a huge improvement to your stopping power good luck my friend and may the greasy gods look upon you and smile I know I always do.
I just can't see someone giving you a thumbs down.
I liked this 100% :)
Did you ever resolve the zerk fittings not accepting grease? Excellent video Ken; I learned a ton! God bless, Don
going in for alignment tomorrow.. going to ask my guy to grease it
We love you too man love watching you do what you do' you're just like me only better lol
Good to see young Noa in the shed. And was that Balon?
na that was Rusty
Unfortunately if your going to stay with the 14 inch rims you have to keep the drums, My chevelle accepted 1970 disc brakes and I liked them so much that I recently added rear discs but I changes to 15 inch wheels. The dual master will work with drums and actually I believe you usually have to shorten the pushrod to get it to work. and if the dual is not a four drum set up you might have to add an adjustable proportioning valve. Happy wrenching.
Proportion valve(different) I think. Nice ride!
If the calipers do rub the rim, you can remove a small amount of the casting to give clearance. I'm not saying to hog-off a bunch, just reshape it some with a lit grind sort of like polishing the metal. Plenty safe enough to do.
Other option would be 15" rims, but you've already bought the 14" tires.
oh I'm well acquainted with a flap wheel! lol.. I checked today.. i think its going to work.. yeah 15s or 14s off an S10.. but I cant find any and im running out of time
If you measure the drum height from the center of the hub to the outside and the center of the hub to top of caliper will let you know the height difference
In NZ, our GM based equivalent of the era ran disc brake on 14 " wheels without issue and the only problem with running a dual master for disc/drum will be the extra pressure going to the front drums
as always love your content

thank you! I checked with a wheel today... and I understand the pressure difference.. thats why I have a proportioning valve

21:10 you might want to replace that long length of fuel hose with a steel line and some short pieces. The engine fan will really work over that hose at engine speed for a long time. Would hate to see it cause an issue.
haha.. come on man! you KNOW i know that! haha
Cool
I’m guessing the bushings on these type of control arms cannot be replaced without a press huh? Great video and by the way, I like your style of working and talking mess 😂 😂 😎
actually I found out the vise worked just as well as the press.. thanks for watching
Yeah I finally got my bushings on, I had tried to chisel a couple out but my neighbor took over the job and finished the rest. Thanks for the reply back. How’s your impala handling?

I do have antique plates on it.. the ones that were originally assigned to the car in 1963
Well sir, I have been watching and enjoying your videos so much that it was a no-brainer to subscribe my other channel and like each video, just like I do with this channel, commercials included.
