Outstanding presentation by Julian and Oliver. My hope for future portable opps is an IC705 powered by a Julian-Style Solar Battery Pack, some bits of wire and some type of 3 or 4 Wheeled EV. Due to mobility issues, I'm currently limited to setting up a table and chair next to my Ford SUV. I operate a Kenwood 590SG powered by a 200Amp AGM battery pack, rechargeable by the engine alternator. I use EFHW antennas of various lengths to operate 20M through 10M plus the WARP bands. I also have a Z-Tuner and intend to add an inductor for 40M. I've been watching Julian's vids for several years. Besides being well produced, they are always educational and inspiring. A very interesting and informative interview! It would be a miracle if these chip shortages would disappear and we could get back to a normal we all once knew. It kinda reminds me of the UK's issue with the Clansman series of radios, all was fine until the warehouse that stocked all of the spares for Plessy semiconductors burnt down. It was a mad dash to find and approve a new line of comms gear for the MOD. Hopefully we can move forward. Checked my "portable" gear, not so portable. SGC2020 with first gen noise reduction, LDG autotuner. Standby current draw, horrendous. TX consumption not the best even when set to QRP. I wonder if Pierre Goral was still alive today if he would have come up with something very efficient power wise and smaller and lighter while maintaining some ruggedness.

Very interesting. Almost makes me want to go qro (as opposed to QRO). Good point about efficiency. I am a bike packer (also kayaker, and Nordic skier), so weight AND size are at a premium. About the LEDs, I wonder if there would be benefit from a bluetooth connection. That way you could relay lots of data. LED brightness could be modulated by ambient light..light sensor as you mention. But I would opt for BT. I always like to think of amplifiers in terms of dB gain and not power. So my 10W KX3 then going to 60 watts would be 9 dB gain. Nice. Consider then going from 60W to ~500 watts is only another 9dB gain. So you've made a wonderful instrument at 100 grams per dB.
Well, first you need to do more of these so VERY good. The glasses are interesting. Is there a story there? Are they for color correction? You're very articulate.
one thing i would like to see that they currently dont make. You would have to have special made or machined. Specific connectors that are metal that have right angles to connect to the other device. Radio to amp to battery pack. I dont like the loop of cable sticking of the side. I Hope that makes sense.
The market really needs more radios like the TX-500. With the global situation being what it is, availability is a real problem. I love my IC-705 but would love to have the durability and efficiency of the TX-500.
there is a way to make the leds dimmable by a button. That way you could set the level of brightness. I wonder though if you make them brighter wouldnt that of course use more battery ? Im not sure how much it would affect as the leds are so small and probably not very negligible.
Hi Julian and Oliver, thank you so much for this nice interview with such amazing informations concerning opportunities of field operation and upcoming future developments 🙏 Im a lucky YL who decided to buy this amazing PA in a very early stage of production, and I can tell you this a real game changer in the field. One of our last activations was on the Island of Dune of Helgoland in the Northern See in March with the special call DL0IH - the setup was a IC705 with the PA500 working most of the time in FT8 or SSB with a Chameleon DeltaLoop Antenna, and this works hours and hours on 8 days fluently without any failures - hundreds of contacts could be made. Of course the PA500 became very, very hot, but it never failed. So the only wish was to have a solution for a better heat dissipation and of course a compact solution of a piggypack battery with solar charging- so everything you are planning in your future projects, Oliver, meets exactly that, what we need in the field 😎 So I‘m looking very much forward to the new battery device, Oliver - and of course your very valuable experiences in the field, Julian, you always share with your following community - THANK YOU SO MUCH AGAIN 🙏 Hopefully keep in touch, vy 73 de Claudia DF1UX

Great question. These companies were all interested in profit and numbers, at the expense of quality. The other problem still exists as well. The components still are not available in the amounts required for higher production.
