I moved to New Orleans in 95 and had to cross the Huey P Long (prior to being widened) every weekday for my GED. Omg it used to be TERRIFYING! 18 wheelers would fly past you and force you to almost drive over the edge to avoid getting hit. Easily the scariest road I've ever driven to this day. Great video! I learned a few things as well.
I am here to tell you the I-10 bridge at Baton Rouge crossing the MS River MOVES !! While helping a stranded lady by changing her flat, I felt just how MUCH that bridge flexes !!
Pretty much any bridge. They have to give a little bit or they would crumble. The bigger/longer the bridge, the more they move! I’ve gotten queasy sitting in traffic on the Huey P Long in New Orleans.
St. John’s bridge in Portland, Or. crossing the Columbia river. Move down west down the Columbia River you have the Lewis and Clark bridge cantilever styled. Further west down the Columbia crossing the Columbia bar the Astoria-Megler same style to the Longview bridge
makes my last name and being from here mean alot more. lol. all those London bridges falling down jokes just still seem lame and low bar ( although as a kid mabye used it on my sister whom we would often say, what if we named you london, haha)
That horse Wilkinson Bridge has to be the most common design in the United States. We had two of those in New York City ;now we only have one ; The Outerbridge Crossing.
2:44 You want to make sure your windows are rolled up when you cross this bridge. There are factories all around making toxic who-knows what and the air is highly carcinogenic. It's more like a miasma. You can literally smell it it the air and it's nothing like the fumes coming from the vehicles. 4:13 This one too.
@Dehydrated Water yeah. I remember being stuck in traffic up there a few times while a train was passing. I’ve been on rope bridges that were more steady than that.
Excellent video! I've crossed all these bridges except the Audubon on Hwy. 10. Any chance of adding the two bridges upriver that connect Louisiana with Mississippi? The bridge that connects Natchez with Vidalia is a beautiful one too.
That was my only trip across the Audubon Bridge myself. I drove across the Natchez/Vidalia bridge back in November for the first time, but the weather was bad, and I didn't have a camera running. We do have video of the I-20 bridge in Vicksburg as part of our US-80 series.
Those have to be the most common bridge design in the United States. I grew up in New York City and we one left that would be the outerbridge crossing.
OK. I was curious why the bridges to Natchez and Vicksburg weren't mentioned. All these bridges are bridges that connect "in" LA and not to Mississippi...
Correct. If I ever go up the river again, I’ll try to hit every bridge on the way. We currently don’t have video of any bridge connecting the two states except for the I-20 bridge.
funny alot of great "bridges"..including my self. ( my last name) lol lame dad joke. speaking of...another and many other great bridges. (okay ill see myself out) great video.
See John Vlog nope. HPL did a lot while he was in office including the construction of those two bridges, around the same time. There are actually several more that bear his name around the state including the old US-90 (now LA-182) bridge in Morgan City and the US-80 bridge in Shreveport.
The people in West Fel & PC Parishes were complaining about ferries issues which were malfunctioning alot, the river water level was too high or low, or it was too foggy.
I m glad they did bridges like tge first one. Not. Sky high or narrow . but I wished they'd went a step more put blinders on the sides. For people who don't like. Crossing. .there's virtual everything else why not bridges for people with fobias?
A couple of years ago we took a friend to Whitney Plantation and crossed the Gramercy Bridge. We had no idea she was afraid of bridges until she fainted. Scared the crap out of my wife and I. She came around in a few minutes and explained that she had a problem with high bridges - wish I would have known that earlier! On the way back we went downriver to Algiers to take the ferry back across.
i remember as a kid feeeling that way. and you would think id be a natural. Bridges is my last name. i did eventually get over it. although some times and its been awhile it still can make you un easy if you focus on the thought.
The bridge was never deliberately orange. A nearby factory produced some kind of pollutant that reacted with the paint on the bridge and caused it to change to the orange color. They've either recently repainted the bridge (most likely, since they seemed to be still in the process of doing that) or whatever the chemical was that caused it is no longer present.
Yeah Huey was accidently shot by one of his guards because Huey was being interrupted by a man that needed something from him and Huey wouldn't give the guy a minute to help him and while the man approached Huey he got upset with the man and from the looks of things the man turned to hold Huey up and Huey's guards shot at the man openly and struck Huey in the process. The story is on Unsolved Mysteries but I'll be honest with you guys I think the guard that shot Huey had actually messed up on his trigger finger while putting the gun in his hand fireing the gun poorly. He said that the gun wasn't correct in his hand and he had to shoot it oddly because it wasn't correct shooting it directly in his hand so it ended up hitting Huey in the back like 4 times due to the mishandleing of the gun in the guards hand.
I love how this video is basically an updated version of Freeewayjim's 2010 video of every Mississippi crossing with the additions of the John James Audubon,Sunshine, and Veterans Memorial Bridges.

@@504RoadTrips The Old Vicksburg bridge is still standing and still in use by Kansas City Southern Railway. As you know, the roadway carrying US 80 was closed to public use and rerouted to the Interstate 20 bridge nearby. It’s still used as a service road from time to time by the railroad and possibly state and local transportation departments.

That was a standard design from the 1940s to the 1980s and thousands of bridges were built during that time period. Most of them still stand today.

Awesome job!
Great tour of awesome bridges!
Thanks.
I was scared to death to cross the Mississippi River when I was a kid. I was never affected by bridges over anything else.
Excellent video! I never crossed any of these. But I have seen the New Orleans Huey P. Long Bridge and Crescent City Connection In person

Few years ago, a crane had hit the Sunshine Bridge and DOTD had the bridge was shut down for a few day. Them plant workers were angry.
Some kind of equipment on a truck was over-height and took out the I-10 overpass over I-49 the other day.

The west Feliciana bridge looks like the bridge to nowhere. Lol.
