  • In this mini-documentary produced by filmmaker John Stanton for the Nantucket Historical Association, ‘Sconset residents share their memories of and experiences with the historic Chanticleer Restaurant, still open today, and the Moby Dick Inn, fondly remembered but no longer in existence. It includes excerpts from a series of oral histories conducted by John Stanton for the NHA in 2019.
In this video, Bob Felch and Paul Judy recall the history and prior owners of the Chanticleer, how it became a first-class French restaurant, and how a group of Sconset residents, feeling it an important part of the Sconset community, saved it from being turned into a private home. John Shea worked at both the Chanticleer and the Moby Dick and compares his experiences in both work places.
The 'Sconset Oral History Project was generously funded by the Judy Family Foundation.

I worked for the Rileys for one summer at the Chanticleer. I was 16. I was a chamber maid in the morning for the cottages and then worked as a waitress for lunch and dinner leaving me pretty much with no time for anything else. I had from 4- 5pm off everyday. I would cry every morning driving to work from Polpis. At the end of the summer, a couple of days before Labor Day, I told Mr. Riley I was leaving as I wanted a day or two off before traveling back to school in Rhode Island.. He said "What are you going to do?" I said resolutely "Nothing." And he steamed off! The place was busy. WE had Tour buses that came in for lunch and everyone loved eating outside in the garden. My grandmother Esther Marshall, my mum Nancy Green and Mrs. David Gray (Nancy) would come for dinner and request me as their server! Thanks for this great history.
