    I have wanted a model 640, and specifically the Pro version for about a decade. More of a bucket list gun as at it's price it doesn't do anything my model 605 can't do, which for the record has been a good revolver. One day, one day I will. About that 22 OZ mark is the sweet spot for being still pocketable weight wise yet shooting like butter with .38 Special+P.

      640 Pro is definitely on my list, too. The one advantage it has over my 605,in my eyes (pun intended) is the sights.
      Taurus fixed sights are notably better for me than S&W.
      But those real soghts on the Pro make shpoting it a breeze. I just got back from visiting a friend who owns one. He is starting to pat me down when I leave, to be aure I leave it there!
      That said, the 640 Pro and 2" 605 would work well together in my double shoulder holster.

    Great video.
    I just bought an 856 new from a local sports store that we all, most likely, have frequented. My 856 is the stainless steel 2” version. It’s stamped made in Brasil and also stamped Bainbridge GA. I’ve put a little over 600 rounds of +P ammo thru it. Some has been factory ammo for carry purpose but most has been my hand loads duplicating my favored +P carry rounds for practice purposes. I’ve long admired the 856 and possibly I made my purchase at the right time in getting a Bainbridge marked gun. I really don’t know but I’ve read on several different forums that the Bainbridge guns are fitted up much better and are of higher quality than some of the previous ones. I like the factory rubber grip too. It’s a natural shooter for me. I’ve had absolutely no malfunction issues if any sort with this revolver so far. I also own multiple revolvers of Ruger, S&W, a Charter Arms Bulldog from the Bridgeport days, and a few older revolver brands of the utilitarian variety like H&R. I personally, at this point at least, put full trust in my 856 and consider the quality and reliability of it to be on par with my Rugers and S&Ws. My particular 856 seems to be a good one and the trigger pull is real smooth. My “daily drivers” are the old Bulldog .44 and the 856. My 856 is so enjoyable that I’ve relegated my S&Ws and Rugers to range toys.

      I hate to say it, but I have a Model 10 snub from 1968. A four inch Model 10 being my favorite handgun, it irks me to no end that I can shoot better with the other 856 I bought a few years ago than that S&W snub.

    I have the new Taurus 856 Executive Grade. They claim that special attention is given to it for quality control, fit and finish, and action work, and that it is a bench built gun in a dedicated room by a gunsmith.
    Kind like what Smith and Wesson does with their performance center guns. It does seem well made and higher quality than normal Taurus revolvers. It’s beautiful and shoots well. I have put a few hundred rounds through it and so far so good. However, I also own a Kimber K6s, and the Taurus Executive still doesn’t approach the quality of the K6s. You can just tell.

    Very good comparison. From my experience I’ve seen problems with quality control in domestic products since the 1970s when at least two legacy firearms manufacturers were foreign owned. There has been peaks and valleys since then. But canted barrels and action problems are a more recent S&W issue. Before it was mostly bad adjustable sights, occasionally rough or excessively heavy actions, or fit & finish. Semi autos had a spotty track record. I never owned a Taurus but had seen them show up at firearms training carried by LEOs as backups. Most tended to exhibit problems. Our issue duty and training ammo was a 147 grain +p+ and the old 158 grain SWCHP +p. When one is training regularly with their carry gun, any problems laying in wait will surface. Taurus has some innovative ideas but the thing is, you want to ideally be able to train regularly and won’t want to see things like the timing go out of whack or the point of impact be messed up because the barrel is improperly canted. My state only requires a 25 round qualification course at the permit class but out to 20 yards. LEOs may still be required by some departments to qualify on courses out to 25 yards. My LEOSA qual, which is the same course shot by active LEOs in my state, was completed the last couple of years with a J-frame the last couple of years. Accurate bullets lighter than 148-158 grains can be pretty sloppy to begin with at greater distance. But factory sights not even regulated for 158 grain impact is completely unacceptable. So are timing issues.

    • @LionquestFitness
      @LionquestFitness  ปีที่แล้ว

      Good job on the LEOSA qualification with a snub. I'm sure you got some looks from those who've never known anything but polymer.

Yes, I've experienced a bunch of returns for warranty work. .i.e. Ruger on a Max 9 they replaced some slide parts, Taurus 605 frame out of spec, they sent me a brand new one, and Charter Arms twice replacing a few parts. All these companies were very customer service friendly and made it easy for me to send it back to them and they fixed it extremely fast. It gives me pause as to trust though. I have two 5 shot guns. One is a 90s era S&W 637 and the other is a Ruger SP101/ The smith is 100% original, no work done on it, many, many practice rounds through it over the years, and still in fantastic condition now issues. The Ruger? No problems. purchased a few years after the Smith. However, I did give this gun a trigger job and some TLC as far as smoothing out the sharp spots here and there by one of the best gunsmiths in the country. I carry the Ruger a lot and added a Hogue grip. That grip just suits my hand extremely well. The Smith is for deep cover based on what I am wearing. I have held off buying any other small revolvers because my needs were met, not my desires as far as buying a new gun, everyone loves a new gun any day of the week. I agree, manufacturing is struggling. New guns are having more problems than they used to. Two years ago, my brother bought a Walther semiauto carry gun and it had to go back to them for a sorting out. It was wildly inaccurate. Walther agreed. It got a new barrel. My brother carries it. I would not have suspected that from Walther. It happens. Taurus is on the upswing. Maybe they will use better screws, that would be nice. If the hand is an issue, I would hope they research how to overcome that as well. Thanks for the series. It has been fun.

    Greg, you hit the nail on the head,,,,,,, "Pre & Post Covid" issues.
    This has hit EVERY facet of American manufacturing or service industries!
    From, guns, to restaurants. The only thing I can say it firearm prices now are not bad, but quality is!
    Restaurants, pricing has went up two or three fold, while quality has dropped to an all-time low!
    Every area of anything comes with a much higher degree of disappointment than I could ever imagine could happen.
    One major problem I'll use for an example is the restaurant business. TWICE the cook/chef just walked of the job and the food was not edible. In the construction trades where I spent a large part of my working years, people just walk off the job? I only presume that this is happening in the gun industry as well?
    Now, for instance, Wilson Combat has had the same gunsmiths for decades while teaching select apprentices for the future. But thay are a custom shop. All other, lets just say your off the shelf gunmakers, are probably seeing people just "Up and Leave"? Thusly, Q.A. stinks. I was talking with a couple old gun guys my age or so. We all agree we wouldn't buy an S&W revolver today! Ruger seemed to be a safer bet. Again, no one is sure.
    Best to ya',,,,!

    • @LionquestFitness
      @LionquestFitness  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ruger by all reports has the best customer service while from personal experience Smith has a "Don't call us; we'll call you" attitude. As far as manufacturing, I work in a high school career and technology center. I network with law enforcement, fire and EMS. My coworkers network with industry. Across the board, as a society, we've lost skilled workers and the desire to work.

    • @walterminer4990
      @walterminer4990 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@LionquestFitness Greg, from I hear as you stated Ruger still has the more or less best customer service out there. The issue for me is we shouldn't pay the money for guns and expect to need customer service!
      It "was" a rare occassion that a new firearm ever needed to be sent back. Today, is a different story, totally.
      One example was the S&W 2.0 failing to go into battery. S&W said it would to be safe to fire if only a 10th of an inch or less out of battery, not sure it even would fire????!!!! That is insane! Off center barrel alignment with a new revolver, not acceptable.
      About the only revolvers that seem to be problem free, as far as I know, are Korth ($$$$), Kimber and Colt after they corrected the new Python series! I have no real experience with Rhino?
      Where I live in S. Florida our Town started their own P.D. and severed the contract with Broward County Sherrif's. I spoke with the new Chief, a 40+ year LEO. He did extreme vetting with new officers. No new graduates, veterans and retired cops who wanted to back to work. He told me, "We're not hiring Broken Toys from other depts.". These folks work with good old school work ethics.
      Other companies are seeing new people getting hired and just walking off the job.
      Again your, "Pre & Post" covid related issues.
      Happy Sunday!
      Best to ya',,,,!

Having a revolver with light primer strikes, which has been an issue as well as the cylinder issues is not acceptable for self defense. The quality of the forged 640 steel allows for it to handle .357 at 22 ounces. However, even though it is rated for .357, a steady diet is not recommended.

    Good stuff Greg, thanks. I know I am biased, but I too think the 640 S&W is the greatest pocket gun ever made. My 1996 version, that I bought new, is accurate well beyond 50 yards (If I do my part). As to quality control, I always ask the gun store employee to show me all of revolvers (in that model) they have in stock. I carefully inspect the fit (especially along the crane) and barrel allignment. I can't tell you how many gun store employees were suprised when I showed them the poor fit and finish of half of their new guns. Also, I never buy a display gun even if it is the last one in stock. Typically the display guns have had the cylinders snapped shut by "cowboys" and the cranes are bent out of alignment. The bigger/heavier guns are especially prone to this because of the weight of the cylinders.

    • @LionquestFitness
      @LionquestFitness  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi John, that last set of statements is very good advice I never thought about. I also agree with you on the 640. Even with some of S&W's current short comings, that gun is like a panther in how it comes out of concealment. And with forged steel, it'll hold up to hotter loads at a lighter weight.

      @@LionquestFitness I never thought about inspecting those specific issues in that level of detail until about 20 years ago when I bought a .44 Magnum Ruger. It was the only .44 Redhawk with a 4 inch barrel that the store had in stock and I watched the idiot behind the counter snap the cylinder shut and winced when he did it but, I was so hot to get my hands on the gun, I bought it anyway and only after shooting it realized the crane was bent and I sent it back to Ruger but it never was quite right even after they worked on it. The Smith was $800 out the door while the Taurus was $340 out the door. To say that I am extremely frustrated is an understatement, especially given the price difference.
    I can’t speak to other people’s experience since COVID but I have heard of Smith having a lot of QC issues on a variety of guns and that their customer service isn’t what it used to be. Perhaps it’s because of them moving their headquarters and having to hire new staff but they need to figure it out quickly before they start getting Taurus’s old reputation.

    Thanks for another great video. I have a hard debate, I’m between the model 60, or sp101 (both would be 3”). I think I would pocket carry sometimes so the sp101 seems that it would snag less in its design. The model 60 has a rear sight, which is a plus in accuracy, but a negative for carrying (especially in the pocket). It’s also lighter than the sp101 by a few ounces. My first and only revolver right now is the gp100 4.2” with the hogue grips. Absolute tank and a sweet shooter. I think I would be familiar with the trigger, function, and overall feel of the firearm if I went with the sp101. If you have any comments on these two let me know! Thanks in advance!
