The intimacy he creates. It’s like you’re the only one in the room

I had the distinct privilege of seeing Prince perform live a half-dozen times over a 20-year period. Your comment about the winks and nods brings to mind the time I took my mother to an arena concert. I had strategically purchased tickets near a platform at the end of a ramp that projected from the main stage into the upper-level seating. Prince performed on the platform 3 or 4 times during the concert, within 5-10 feet of our seats. The first time he ran up briefly and was mugging for the crowd, and the lighting was fairly dark. The second time the audience lighting was up, and he noticed my mother and then looked at me, nodded and smiled - while playing the white Auerswald symbol guitar.
This song is on my list of the 5 Prince songs that every person in the world should (but doesn't) know, along with Empty Room, Joy in Repetition, The Question of U, and Dolphin. Variations on themes of love and loss -- and in this case, especially poignant given both the inspiration for the song (the death of Jonathan Melvoin, brother of Wendy and Susannah and many-time collaborator with Prince in the mid-1980s), and his exhortation for us to show him our hearts because he has shown us his.

Wow.... I've never seen him do this song live. Moving. Incredible. Sublime. God, how this man shined his light on this Earth while he was here with us. Listening to this, I am reminded how his songs occasionally contained simple, but profound wisdom, that I often find reveals deeper truths at times in my life when I most need to hear them. "The only love there is, is the love we make." Truer words were never spoken. You have no idea how timely it is for me to hear these lyrics. I get it now after so many mistakes--par for the course in being just...human.
His words continue to touch my soul, and provide spiritual guidance. I love him still and always. 💜

You always pointed in your reaction not only the guitar part but the whole performer he was and I really appreciate that from you. As said by many here already, he mastered his stage presence and his live performances like no else. It's everytime a full experience to witness how he enjoyed being on stage. You should add to your list of this song, one he did also in 2011 in LA. It's audio only but the 3 minutes intro by Renato Neto on the keyboard and Prince's guitar solo are really worth it.

I just heard a sound check from 1988 of some songs I’ve never heard. He’s playing the guitar and I think when you hear the piano he’s doing that too. It’s an audio only. m.th-cam.com/video/UoJZIqV6GO0/w-d-xo.html&pp=QAFIAQ%3D%3D

i appreciated your commentary and reaction. imagine watching this when it came out in 2011, before prince snatched it up!!! 😂 i watched these videos over and over again! the translation of emotion was very sincere with prince live and he opened it up. as he said “eye showed my heart 2 u, show my heart 2 me” proves worthy each time! thank you for your reactions, it’s cool to see someone else dig the sound!

Prince was an expert at energy transfers for sure. I knew him for 10 years and got a lot of those looks from him…the smirks and the shade alike. 😂😂😂 But the first thing that came to mind when you said that was this one show at Paisley with only about 30-40 people there. I used to hang towards the back of the room, so I’d have more room to dance, but I had my 7 year old sister with me that night (I would’ve been probably 19 or 20 years old). And everyone there that night were regulars at those private events and basically like family to me now…so they told my sister and I to go up to the front right in front of P’s mic stand. The last song they played that night was Thank You (Falletinme Be Mice Elf Agin), and I must have been singing a little too loud because at one point, he looked straight down at me and chuckled. He came to the house and met my sister when she was only 2 months old, so I really hope he realized that it was her there with me. He gave me so many opportunities between the ages of 12 and 22 when he passed….. anyway…I’m getting off topic now. My brain has been in a really weird place with all things Prince the past couple of weeks. But anyway…the night after that particular concert, he had a public dance party. And about 10 of us that were at the private show the night before wrote thank you cards, and Donna’s husband, Trevor, told us later that P made the whole staff sit around in a circle after the party was over that night and read every single one of the thank you cards out loud. 😭😭 I miss him every single day. It’s honestly exhausting and really hard to not have him here anymore. I miss my friend and mentor and all the conversations and arguments and energy transfer smirks from across the room. 💜
Anyway…I loved this reaction of yours too, Brian. Can’t wait to see what you dig up next to react to. 🥰🥰

@@GuitarSoloReactions I just went and found that particular show on youtube just now, and it brought back so many memories. The guitar work was fantastic on this show, and it’s so fun to hear every single one of us in that tiny audience singing every word to a bunch of songs he had just released about 3 weeks prior.
I had completely forgotten about this until listening to this show again just now, but during Donna’s solo on Let’s Go Crazy, she came and knelt down near the front of the stage and played that solo directly to my sister. 🥰🥰😭 And after the performance, we went back over to the L4OA room, and everyone was sitting on couches on the edges of the room except my sister and I. We were dancing together in the middle of the room, and she was jumping around with these sandals on that kept making flip flop noises. 😂 To this day, she won’t admit to liking Prince’s music that much, but her energy and joy after that performance told a different story. 💜

Seeing your face as he plays, Brian, tells me that you'd absolutely love the Live On A Big Screen posthumous concerts that the Estate have put on.
It really is the only the way we can feel this close to a concert now.
Love this song. And the live versions had guitar on it that the original doesn't have. Lyrically alone it is a masterpiece.
    Thanks for another genuine reaction.

Hi Brian, loved your reaction to this stellar performance 💜 It is one of my favourite songs too. Truly beautiful, emotional and powerful. Such a great message. To think this song is almost a hidden album track from a 3 disc set, Emancipation, that doesn’t get enough love in my opinion. When you said the word endearing, I almost cried! That word fits him totally. Such an amazing man, such a genius, and from a female point of view a very gorgeous man too. He is just perfection on every level to me. He gave everything to us, left everything on that stage. The way he conveys emotions though his playing and his vocals is second to none. He can make me cry in a heartbeat. He can make me want to dance. He can make me smile. Every emotion comes out when I watch him. Love him eternally. Taking about crying, he performs this with 3rdeyegirl in Montreux in 2013, on keyboard this time, with Donna taking guitar duties. Oh my goodness it’s emotional as it looks like he’s in tears at the end. Very powerful performance indeed.
