@@CraftyConceptswithErin I wish... Wow!! What an absolute gem of a video! So many good takeaways here. Your teaching style is so clear and easy to follow. Thank you for taking the time to teach all of this.
I'm so glad you mentioned the acid free statement regarding the clear 8 1/2 x 11 labels. I also wondered about the labels you print out from your portable label maker.
That is a great question. I don’t see anything specifically stating they are acid free. I have had the clear plastic ones slightly yellow from long ago so I switched to the white paper option and have used it for over 15 years without issue in my albums. It still looks great. Whenever I’m not 100% sure about it I just don’t let it touch my photos. Sometimes I add ephemera from travels (tickets stubs and things of that nature) and I never know if those things are archival safe so just separate from photos to be careful.
I agree and do add my handwriting in from time to time for that reason. I have a handful of cards from my dad and enjoy reading them still after 20 years.
This is by far the best scrapbooking video I've seen yet - your layouts are SO creative and your suggestions are excellent. I saved my daily planner's unused lined pages and plan on using those as journalling pages in a scrapbook for my son. they're a perfect size and can still be cut down as needed. Your suggestion for using a textbox will really help when I type an entry, too. Thanks!
Oh I love this idea! I have been searching high and low for a stamp and die cut for little notebook journaling..the day planner square is perfect. Thanks!!!!!
That’s a good tip on the redline tape to prevent other parts from coming apart. I have typically just used my ATG gun/tape and made a gusset but never on the back of a photo. I may have to try combining for success. Nowadays I mainly just work in travelers notebooks but it’s valuable information no matter your style because adhesives are everything when doing any kind of paper crafting in general.
Thank you so much for directing me to this video. I picked up some really neat tips like printing the journaling landscape and using my small guilotine slicer for cutting strips and lots more. Awesome video! Using the Dymo is brilliant!

You are most welcome and I am glad to hear you picked up a few ideas to try. Along with making a text box I will change the paper size to 4x6 or 3.5x5 so I’m only running a small piece of cardstock through the printer.
Thank you for this video. I love journaling, even if it’s a few sentences. As years go by, when I look back, I forget the year, how old my kids were at the time, & I love the funny memories that I would have forgotten if I hadn’t journaled. I usually use pocket cards or dicut boxes/tags onto my layout. I love your idea of printing on clear labels. I found the Avery transparent shipping label at Staples & just bought the last one. Thank you! The label maker is a good one for travel or if you just have a few details to add. Love the die cutting method, you should definitely give it a try 😃
What a great idea to put all these together and share with us! Thank you so much! I have done most of these, but never used my LabelMaker, because I didn’t realize it was acid free. Also, I like the idea of the clear Avery labels you made. It’s nice to know there’s some acid free products out there that we can use. Thanks again for sharing, I found myself doing screenshots on almost every page! ❤️ from Spokane, WA.
I am glad you enjoyed the video! Not all label maker material is acid free and I recommend checking with the companies who manufacture it. I generally do not place it on my photos so it wouldn't damage them anyways. The white paper type of labels from Dymo has stayed nice and white over the years, no sign of yellowing.
This was so helpful! I have used a few of these ideas successfully, but you have really challenged me to branch out. This was like setting Through a wonderful class. Thank you!
I always hand print my journaling, mostly onto die cut shapes which I adhere to the finished page. I also use a very fine point journal pen. Coincidentally last week I was looking at label makers in our office supply store but not for journaling. Now I have an additional reason to purchase one. Thank you Erin for these very helpful hints.
Thank you Denise. It is so important to add your handwriting so it good you apply that method to your layouts. Glad I could give you another reason to need the label maker.
These are really great tips for journaling. Creative ideas so you can change up the look. I have never thought about tge label maker. I love that idea! Thanks for sharing these tips.
This was a great video! Thank you for sharing all of the ways you journal! I so wish I could use my printer for journaling but for the life of me I cannot get it to feed my scrapbook paper, no matter the weight of it! I also loved taking another look at your beautiful artwork!
Thank you! That is such a bummer your printer won't take your cardstock, I think I'd be saving for a new printer. I always look for one that has a rear feed option. Some thicker papers won't round the bend in a tray feed printer. Hopefully that is making sense. But handwriting your journaling is always a good and easy way to get the story on the layout.
Thanks so much for putting all of these great ideas together in one very useful video Erin. I’m now going to watch again and take notes this time. I’ve never thought of using my label maker…or the label sheets! Thanks again.
You are so welcome and I am glad you picked up a few new ideas to try. I love the ease of the label maker for travel and the label sheets are new to me but I'm enjoying them!
I always wondered how you did the word strips---thank you for this tutorial. I am going to try several of your ideas (so often the page gets put away without any journaling) bad, bad. Thank you do much. Love your layouts.
Thank you Ellen, we are all guilty (at least most of us) for putting layouts away without journaling. It seems to be more of a challenge for me to go back and complete it so I really strive to get the details recorded.
I watched your latest video last night where you mentioned this video. Thank you, thank you so much for all these fantastic ways to add journaling, especially how to use pages on a Macbook, which I already did following your instructions this morning, yay! Double spacing and choosing template shapes is so great and will definitely give me variety and better ways to add journaling. New subbie! 😊
I love the idea of using a label maker. I will bring my label maker on my next scraping retreat. I thought I'd also mention a few tricks I've used. When using your printer, if you don't want black text you can change the colour of the text (assuming you have a colour printer) and often there is a setting for vellum. I've also found my handwriting looking nicer if I use a marker with a chisel tip, it will be a bit larger mind you. Finally, if there isn't much to journal I will sometimes use micro-sized sticker letters. It is tedious and you will need to use a tweezer but it gives a different look. Love watching your videos. Please don't stop they are always inspiring.
These are really great tips and I appreciate you sharing. I used to change the color when printing quite a bit but for some reason haven't done that in a while. I liked to select certain words from the body of text and make them a contrasting color so they stood out. I will have to try a chisel tip. Thanks again!
Thanks for sharing all these ideas for journaling. I want to try the printing on bottom of card stock and then adding to the layout technique. That is very clever!
Fantastic ideas! I do most of these but haven’t printed my journaling out in such a long time. I used to do that more years ago when I first started scrapbooking, but I’m excited to try it out again with the journaling strip technique. I love the look of that much better than the block of journaling places somewhere but find that I use the pocket cards a lot as well as label stickers (like from Elle’s studio) I stagger a few labels of differing sizes and write directly on them. I’m not much of a story teller and typically do The Who what, where, when. Or bullet /list journal. Thanks again for all the inspiration!!
I love the strip journaling, it’s definitely my favorite. Most of my layouts just contain the basic details, it’s not as common for me to write the whole story. Pocket cards are always a good option and add character as they usually have a design element.
Loved your video - great seeing all those options and good examples in one place. Your layouts are beautiful. I've used most - maybe all - of these journaling options - journaling strips is probably my favorite, but another one I use a lot is similar to #7, except that I rarely handwrite more than a few words. I will create my text in Word so that it will line up with the journaling card or sticker, print on plain paper, then tape my card or sticker over the printed text, and run it back through the printer to print on the card. I also use just plain journaling blocks a lot - similar to #4 -- print on any plain or patterned paper to fit my space, cut out, edge with ink or mat with another paper or cardstock, and adhere to the layout - yes, very 'old school', -- but I always embellish the journaling block to dress them up. I also killed a printer a few years ago running vellum through it for my journaling, but that hasn't stopped me from using vellum on my pages.
Hi Judy, I am imagining that moment when you killed your printer with the vellum, what a bummer! You are the second person that has shared how you print and then line up the pocket card and run it through again. That is very clever and I will definitely try that trick.
Just love your layouts. Picked up some tips, even with the methods I use. My preferred is definitely on the computer and I do print on transparencies quite a lot, as well as using pocket journaling to save room on my layouts. I also like finding stickers with phrases that say what I want and then add the date, place, etc. Thanks for a very helpful video.
Thank you, I’m so glad you found it helpful. Yes, word stickers that help tell the story are so fun to incorporate. I can’t believe I had not heard of printing on transparencies until recently!
This is a very informative video! You explain everything so well and all the different ways of journaling on the pages. I tend to either print or hand write on mine simply because I’m not very well adapted to computers and the programs you use. Love the look of the typed journaling on vellum especially. Thanks for doing this
Thanks for lots of ideas! I sometimes print out my journaling then adhere my cardstock to the printer paper so it’ll print right where I want it 😀 Your way is easier 😀. TFS
Thank you Erin, this was so helpful. I've used a couple of these ideas in the past but my usual is a journaling block that I've done on the computer. I've never seen it done with transparent sticker paper, I really liked the look of that. Also like the journaling strips - like you said, it's nice that the pattern paper is peeking through. I'm definitely keeping this video handy.
Love all the great tips you shared on this video. Especially using my Mac and being able to journal in a small area…I’ve wasted so much paper trying to get it to fit my space on my layout. I also love the travel label maker…I wasn’t sure if the tape for the maker was archival or not!
Thank you, I am glad it was helpful! Way back when I first started using a label maker I didn't think to make sure it was archival safe but ten plus years later the strips still look good especially the white paper option. I never put the label maker tape over my photos either when I am not sure.
TFS these great journaling tips. When you type your journaling onto a pocket card, what font & size do you normally use? Same question for the journaling strips. TIA… Will be saving this video so that I can refer back to it as needed!
You are very welcome and I am glad you found it helpful. I typically use the American Typewriter font. I adjust the size to fit the space needed but generally between 11 and 14
I have used notecards, phrase stickers, tags, labels and writing directly onto the layout. But i never thought about using my label maker! Love this idea!!
Thank you for sharing all these great ideas!I struggle with my journaling & where to put it. These ideas will definitely help! My son bought me a label maker for Christmas for my craft room but I never thought to take it to a retreat to use for my journaling. It will be packed for my next one! Maybe you create another tutorial about how you size your pictures? I downloaded the app you suggested, but can’t figure out how to use it🤦🏼♀️!
Hello Dodie! How fun you got as label maker for Christmas, you will have to let me know how you like it for journaling. I will have to do a video on how I use the print to size app for you and share it in the private FB group.
These are such cool & helpful ideas! I have a label maker & have been wondering if they were safe to put on my scrapbook pages for my journaling or just make word strips like the Tim Holtz small talk stickers. You have just answered that question, so thank you very much! Thanks for making this video. It has many helpful tips I can use!
Hello Julia, I’m so glad you found it helpful. I have used my label maker for over ten years and the strips still look good especially the white paper option. I like your idea for creating small word phrases, I hadn’t thought of doing that
@@CraftyConceptswithErin I never thought I would be giving you a new idea lol! But so glad I could. I will remember to get the white paper ones. In fact, I'm putting it on my shopping list for tomorrow.
Thanks, Erin. These are great ideas. I think journaling is very important, especially capturing names, dates and places (who, what, where and when). I also had it very engrained in my scrapbooking experiences that it is really important to capture your own handwriting, so I do as much of that as I can... although, the older I get, the less appealing my handwriting is. Ugh~ As important as I think using my own handwriting is, I will also counter that with the idea that it is just as important to actually capture the story - and sometimes, it's just so much more efficient to use a printer. It saves so much time and you can really get your text to fit very nicely on a page that way. I was curious, when you do strip journaling, how particular are you with trying to make sure your strips are the same width (not the length so much as the width of the strips)? I guess, whenever I try to do that, I get too caught up in trying to get them all the same size and it drives me crazy. I have not tried the laser labels... but I think I will! I'm glad to know they are photo safe. I am also a big fan of incorporating whimsical quotes, bible verses and poems that fit with my layouts.
I love the idea of adding bible verses and quotes. I totally forgot to mention phrase stickers but those are awesome for painting as picture as well. I do not like my handwriting either but make an effort to write on a layout every so often. I do love the printing because you can fit more and it is so tidy.
Thank you! I have a couple different printers. I print my photos with the Epson Picture Mate 400 and the one I use for journaling is an Epson Expression Photo XP-970. (It is also a photo printer) I have used my Picture mate to print journaling also. It takes a smaller paper size but the ink is more expensive so I try to use the larger printer
Thank you Kelly. I have a couple different printers. I print my photos with the Epson Picture Mate 400 and the one I use for journaling is an Epson Expression Photo XP-970. (It is also a photo printer)
Hello Cathy, you should totally try it! In the computer under page setup I select 4x6 or 3.5x5 for my paper size. My printer has a slide that you can adjust to the paper size and then it goes right through no problem. Someone else suggested printing it on regular paper then adhering the pocket card over the printed area with removable tape and running it through again so it prints on the card. I thought this sounded like a clever idea.
This was a very helpful and inspiring video. Thank you for sharing. Can you give me tips on how to get the printer to print on smaller scraps or cards? What type of printer world well printing on cardstock? My current printer does not.
I am so glad this was a helpful video for you. I have two different printers, my primary photo printer is the Epson Picture Mate 400 and it's amazing for photos. It will also take smaller (5x7 and under) sized pieces of cardstock. I also have an Epson Expression Photo XP-970. It is my all purpose office printer but it also prints photos. It has a rear feed tray making it a good option for thicker paper like cardstock. I can size cardstock down to a 3.5 x 5 and run it through this printer also. I have heard some will adhere a smaller piece of cardstock to a letter sized paper and run it through their printer. You'd print first onto the letter size paper then attach your small cardstock over the printed area then print again. Hopefully that makes sense but if your printer doesn't like cardstock that may not work for you.
Hi Erin! Thank you so much for sharing your amazing talent! I got the avery full sheet clears (product 18665) for inkjet printer which is the kind of printer I have. Even though I let my printing on the labels dry overnight, It looks like the ink is dry but it still isn't dry and, of course, smears when I go to apply the label. I tried using different settings on the printer. How do you have success with this? Do i need to let it dry overnight and then blot? I did that once and I smeared the ink when I blotted it . I would greatly appreciate any help as i LOVE this technique.
Hi Kathy, I am glad you got it to work. I typically only have to wait five minutes before its dry. I set my printer to photo paper semi gloss. I ran it through as plain white paper when I first started using it but find the words are a bit sharper with this method.
I plan on adhering full 8-1/2 x 11 journal pages to my holiday scrapbook pages, which are acid free paper from a Michael's Scrapbook / photo album. Can you recommend one of your videos or some advise to keep it looking neat?
Unfortunately I do not have many videos featuring an 8.5 x 11 format but I imagine the journaling would look very nice if you matted it on a color of cardstock to match the colors on the corresponding layouts. For example, trim your letter sized journaling sheet down by 1/2 inch and center it on a colored pice of cardstock so you have the pop of color bordering the story.
Im new to scrapbooking and still learning. I liked the label maker ideal. I was just wondering what kind of label maker i need to get to write or journal with.? My handwriting isnt so good. Hello, welcome to this wonderful scrapbooking hobby! I do not love my handwriting either and tend to type my journaling on the computer however they do say it is good to add bits of your handwriting because your family will enjoy seeing it in the future though. I have an old Dymo Letratag label maker. I plan to upgrade to the Brother P-Touch as this is what many of my crafty friends have and highly recommend. I recommend using the white paper tape in your label machine, the plastic options can yellow over time if they are not acid free. I have used label maker tape in my albums for over a decade and not had any issues but I do not place it in direct contact with my photos because it is not marked as archival safe. Here is a link to the Brother p-touch amzn.to/4dJol6Z there is also a less expensive option amzn.to/3X6TXwe

Thank you!
Thank you, I'm so glad it was helpful.
I love all your layouts! These are such great ideas for journaling. Going to order the Avery label sheets.
Thank you! I’m having fun with the clear sheets and glad I stumbled across another TH-camr recommending them.
OMG thank you Erin can't wait to try out these methods...
I’m so glad to hear that Debbie! It is fun having so many options to work with.
Great tips
Thank you
Thank you Marsha, you are very welcome.
These are really great tips for journaling. Creative ideas so you can change up the look. I have never thought about tge label maker. I love that idea! Thanks for sharing these tips.
You are so welcome! I have used the label maker for a very long time and the strips still look great over ten years later.
This is an awesome video with so much information. I particularly enjoy all your examples. You really know how to teach! Thank you for this video!!!
Thank you, I’m so glad you enjoyed it. This was a fun video to create.
Love these ideas! Thanks so much for sharing!
You are most welcome, I hope you picked up an idea or two.
Great tips!
Thank you, I'm so glad you think so!
New subbie! 😊
Hello, I am so glad this video was helpful and thank you for subscribing! I hope you find lots of inspiring ideas here on my channel.
LOVE your work Erin and really enjoy watching your videos for inspiration!! Happy New Year to you & your Family 🥳
Thank you Michelle, happy New Year to you and yours!
Thanks for the wonderful ideas.
You are most welcome, I hope you picked up an idea to try.
I love his video! So helpful. Your layouts are lovely also.
Thank you Kathi, I am so glad you found this video to be helpful.
Thank you for the great tips. I just started using transparency paper for my journaling on my project life cards.
You are welcome. When I first saw the transparency paper used on a travelers notebook layout I had to check it out right away. It is pretty darn cool!
Thank you. Love this
You are very welcome, I’m glad you enjoyed it.
And I also wanted to add, I love all the ideas. Almost all of my journaling is my handwriting. I want to start doing some printed strips!
Thank you. Printed strips are one of my favorite techniques.
Thanks for sharing all these ideas for journaling. I want to try the printing on bottom of card stock and then adding to the layout technique. That is very clever!
Oh good, I am glad your are going to give it a try. I love the way it looks.
Great video! I do most of these already but I want to try the clear label paper.
Thank you Cheryl, the clear label
paper is pretty neat. Apparently it’s been around for awhile and I’m not sure how I only recently discovered it.
Excellent video!! & I love your layouts :)
Thanks so much! 😊 I am very glad you enjoyed the video.
Thank you for a great presentation. I am new to this and have not journalled before but you have given me so many ideas it seems possible now.😁
Thank you, welcome to this amazing hobby! I am so glad this video was helpful for you.
This was awesome! I’m excited to try some clear label paper!
Thank you Jami, it is so neat and I can’t believe I only recently discovered it.
Just found your channel , very impressed! So many tips, thank you!
Hello Leslie and welcome. I am so glad you found my channel and hope you find a lot of helpful tips and inspiration.
Erin, your layouts are always inspiring! I love your style and the content that you provide! Awesome work!
Thank you Renee, that is so nice to hear!
Beautiful layouts. Going to try transparency. I have used the Avery label sheets...love them!
Thank you! The labeling tape is so convenient.
This is a very informative video! You explain everything so well and all the different ways of journaling on the pages. I tend to either
print or hand write on mine simply because I’m not very well adapted to computers and the programs you use. Love the
look of the typed journaling on vellum especially. Thanks for doing this
You are welcome and I'm glad it was helpful! I am not super tech savvy but the text box method has been a game changer for me.
Thanks for lots of ideas! I sometimes print out my journaling then adhere my cardstock to the printer paper so it’ll print right where I want it 😀 Your way is easier 😀. TFS
Hi Nancy, sometimes I do that as well in order to print the journaling on a pocket card or other predesigned element.
@@CraftyConceptswithErin wow great thanks for your response 😀
Thank you Erin, this was so helpful. I've used a couple of these ideas in the past but my usual is a journaling block that I've done on the computer. I've never seen it done with transparent sticker paper, I really liked the look of that. Also like the journaling strips - like you said, it's nice that the pattern paper is peeking through. I'm definitely keeping this video handy.
Thank you Diane, so glad this video was helpful. I was pretty excited to discover the transparent sticker paper.
For vellum paper, I like to utilize brads to attach to my page 😁
Love this video. Please more “tips” type of videos for other topics. Thx.
Brads are a great idea and much easier to use than the old eyelets. I am glad you enjoyed this type of tip video.
Great job! I love everyone of these. You did a fantastic job teaching and inspiring Thank you
Oh, thank you for your kind words, you are very welcome.
I really loved this! I am now curious to try printing onto the label sheets! It was fun to look again at a lot of your layouts from videos past :)
Thank you! I just mentioned to Julie that I can't believe I just recently discovered the transparency sheets. They are so handy!
TFS these great journaling tips. When you type your journaling onto a pocket card, what font & size do you normally use? Same question for the journaling strips. TIA…
Will be saving this video so that I can refer back to it as needed!
Oh good, I am so happy you picked up an idea to try. It is certainly handy for travel and looks great on the layout.
@@CraftyConceptswithErin ❤️
I have recently been embracing my own handwriting and doing my journaling that way.
Nice, it is so important to incorporate your handwriting. It’s probably the quickest method too which is always good
I usually use a tag of create a square to hold journaling. I will be trying out the technique where you cut apart the lines and the clear labels.
I am glad to hear you will give them a try. It can be fun to change up your journaling style!
I don’t know if I have just one go-to style. I don’t often type my journaling. I love using a tag or PML card.
PML cards are always a great option and so convenient. It is so important to include your handwriting so it’s good you include it.
I do want my strips to be the same width so I totally get that. When I set the line spacing to 1.5 or 2 it really seems to help with uniformity.
Great methods!! WHAT PRINTER DO YOU USE THAT ACCEPTS ODD SHAPES OF PAPER, like a 3 x 5? Mine only works with 8 1/2 x 11 or 4 x 6.
Love this video great ideas. What printer do you use?
Thank you Kelly. I have a couple different printers. I print my photos with the Epson Picture Mate 400 and the one I use for journaling is an Epson Expression Photo XP-970. (It is also a photo printer)
Awesome Thanks
Thank you Adele, so glad you enjoyed this video.
I want to print on pocket cards! Great idea. How do you get a 3x4 to go thru your printer? And the same with small pieces of cardstock or vellum!
This is the big printer amzn.to/45cSRSd
And this is the Epson Picture Mate 400 for photos and smaller cardstock pieces amzn.to/3E3kTUv
I may have figured it out. I went online with Avery. I believe I needed to use a different printer setting. Thank you again!
Hi Kathy, I am glad you got it to work. I typically only have to wait five minutes before its dry. I set my printer to photo paper semi gloss. I ran it through as plain white paper when I first started using it but find the words are a bit sharper with this method.
When I do pockets behind photos, I use double-sided foam tape to create the pocket to slide the journaling in and out.
That works well too and I have used that method also 😃
I have arthritis in my hands, my writing is terrible. I have found writing on the back of my pages helps. Barb from Central Queensland Australia. ❤
I’m sorry you suffer with arthritis, I know that is painful and very limiting. Writing on the back is a great tip.
I dont journal a lot because i think i have messy writing. Could really us any help or ideals you could give me. Ive just recently been watching everything i can find about scrapbooking for tips. I love all your tips. You share the best tips. Thank you😊
Hello, welcome to this wonderful scrapbooking hobby!
