The kanji in the image does say kitsune which means fox. The thing with japanese is that 3 Japanese alphabets exist: Hiragana, Katakana and Kanji. The first two have a character for each syllable (which mean they are phonetical alphabets) and kanji has one character per word, leading to its unique writing. Also Google uses Hiragana on its translator, but it also knows Kanji while at the same time it doesn't know Katagana.
