Yeah, despite the logic causing a lot of raised eyebrows, it sort of actually make sense for Odette to be the bastard child of the king and a mistress whom he used as an incubator who may have died off screen.
Fun fact : there is a prequel just out that's called "The Swan Princess : A Fairytale Is Born." and this is a prequel told through flashbacks and we DO get introduced to Odette's mother Queen Aubery . From the trailer it does look like Queen Aubrey dies during childbirth and that King William and Queen Uberta and her husband King Maximillian (Derek's father) are the best of friends.
@@eleanorhogan8643 that’s what I thought as she was never mentioned throughout the Swan Princess film series or that she was simply a woman in William’s palace who had simply given him an heir
It really would have! But they needed an heir to unite the two kingdoms, so both the king and queen's heirs needed to marry for the unification to last.
The narrator at the beginning of this movie did inform viewers after King William banished Rothbart from his kingdom for messing with dark magic, that the agreement between King William and Queen Uberta was that he would bring his daughter with him to her kingdom every summer beginning when Odette was 5 years old and continuting she was 18 (I think it was 18, anyway) to let their children spend those summers together in the hopes that they would naturally fall in love sometime during those annual summer visits. Thus, it was never a true betrothal agreement made. That's why when King William and Princess Odette were saying goodbye to Queen Uberta and Prince Derek at the end of that last agreed upon summer visit, King William told Queen Uberta "We tried, Uberta, and that's all we could do."
If Rothbert was planning to marry into the royal family, then maybe he's atempted this before? What if he did the same to Odette's mother in the past? she would have gone missing at some point after gving birth, and people probably eventually assumed she died or ran off or something; if ths is true, she evidently did not give in to him, so in time she would have died (how long do swan live?) or maybe the constant back and forth transformations took a toll on her mind and she becomes that crazy hag we see in the movie. A little far fetched, I know, but fun to think about.
The main issue I see with Odette being the daughter of a mistress, is historically, such children haven't been recognized in the ascensoon to the throne. Henry the 8th had at least one son out of wedlock, and he was well taken care of, but was never considered in the run for the crown. Maybe her mom is just too busy playing Minecraft to be in the story.
@@rosaleenstark9187 I'll admit, it's been decades since I studied it. But as I recall, the other nobility and more importantly the church wouldn't hear of an illegitimate son on the throne. Thus Henry blamed each wife for lack of heir, and changed spouses like socks, and also split from the Catholic Church. The idea tossed around was that if the son of a mistress were on the throne, there might be a revolt! But it's been a while since I studied it.
Furthermore, I watchrd the fairly recent Swan Princess movie, "Far Longer Than Forever" and found that it revealed what happened to Princess Odette's mother.
there is a new swan princess movie that is coming out and it showed Odette's mother while she is gettting ready to give birth. Than in the trailer it showed a portrait of her and that the portrait of her came to life to answer odette's question. So i think she died at childbirth or died with an illnes sometime during odette's childhood
What if Rothbart was the son of the elderly woman and King Rupert! That would make him the illegitimate son of the king which would explain his obsession with the throne and why he wants to take it LEGITIMATELY.
I remember a few of the songs and the fact that Derick only cared for her appearance, but I legit don't remember Odette doing a whole 180 and suddenly falling in love with him for no reason. It's like they wanted to jump on the band wagon for the Disney Renaissance but took more inspiration from the classic era 🤔
Sony and Rankin/Bass may have been the biggest NAMES attached to the film, but Rich Animation did the work. I worked for Richard Rich at the time, and my name is in the credits.
That is absolutely amazing! Thank you for sharing that - if I get a chance to discuss the movie again, I will definitely make not that Rich Animation was the main animation studio!
If you watch the preview for the latest movie in The Swan Princess series, it's implied that Odette's mom either dies in childbirth or dies shortly after the birth/presentation of Odette to the kingdom (which would explain the lack of grief and sadness on the part of the king); she lived just long enough to enjoy the happiness of her daughter's arrival into the world and the kingdom's history before her death.
It took me a while to realise I have INDEED seen this movie…it’s possible I saw this after the Barbie one 🤷♀️ I always seem to remember the part where Odette as a swan falls😅

I have a very interesting theory about Odette's mother, and in my opinion this theory makes total sense. the film begins by introducing us to King William who was lord of a Great and Powerful kingdom, however he lived sad because he was getting old and not having children to inherit the throne, until one day. for his Happiness a daughter was born, a princess and her name was Odette. however, they do not mention Odette's Mother. And that's where my Theory comes in. King William lived with his Wife in the Castle, the Queen. (Odette's mother) I believe that Odette's mother was a woman very loved by her people and she was a very wise and kind Queen, only she and King William couldn't have children, King William couldn't because he was old and she couldn't because she was barren (I believe Odette's Mother was a few years younger than King William) and some people of the Kingdom whispered and even spoke ill of the queen. saying that she would never give King William an heir and that saddened the Queen so much, she couldn't live with it. King Willian loved his wife too much and he didn't care about the fact that she couldn't have children, but even so the Queen wanted to give her husband an heir. So, one night the queen got up from her bed, opened the window of her Chambers and wished to Heaven that she could bear a son. shortly afterwards, the queen's wish came true and she discovered that she was pregnant and told her husband, and the whole kingdom learned of the great news, many were shocked and did not believe the great news. and to commemorate King William threw a Great Feast, the Queen was very happy, as her greatest wish was fulfilled and for nine months she and King William waited anxiously for the arrival of their son or daughter, until the Great Day arrived and the Queen began to feel labor pains and was taken by the Midwives to the Delivery Room as her son was about to arrive. and then we get to the beginning of the movie where we see King William walking up and down the Palace corridor and then we see a Maid arriving with Odette and delivering her to King William and then King William presents his Daughter to the kingdom and the scene cuts to the Christening of Odette. but I believe that in this Court there was a great gap of time, and that's where the other Theory comes in, I believe that at the same time that King William was presenting his daughter to the Kingdom, that same maid who delivered Odette came crying to the King and gave a very Sad News that shook the King Completely. the Queen...was...dead. her delivery had been too much work and she ended up not resisting, and she died. that News brought a tremendous shock to the king, he did not believe what he had heard, all the people who were There heard the news and were completely shocked. the king gives his daughter to the Maid and runs to the Delivery Room, when he gets there he sees many maids crying and when he looks in a certain direction he sees his Wife Dead in the Bed where the birth of his Daughter, the king is completely shocked and devastated, and begins to hug his wife's body and after that he gives a cry of sadness and begins to cry for the death of his wife, the great love of his life, and the whole kingdom begins to mourn for the death of your beloved queen. the King mourned the death of his Wife for a long time, as she would not see his daughter take her first steps, would not hear her first words and would not see her daughter grow up, after a few weeks he took his newborn daughter and named her ODETTE in honor of his late wife who gave her life to bring their daughter into the world. (yes folks, I believed that Odette was named after her late Mother, as if it were a tribute her father paid. and I always believed that Odette looked like her mother.) plus, with the arrival of the trailer "The Swan Princess: the fairytales is Born" this whole theory of mine was totally cancelled, one more thing that made me happy was the fact that we finally got to see Odette's Mom and Derek's Dad, my dream was that one day nest entertainment would make a movie focused on Odette's mom and It looks like that wish came true. my dream was to see Odette's mother one day and that dream came true too, Thanks God. but anyway guys, what did you think of this theory of mine? did you like her? think it makes sense or rather think it made sense, before they released the trailer "the Swan Princess: the fairytales is Born." PS: Forgive me for the long text, but I had to comment on my theory.
I like your theory! However, Odette's mother was eventually revealed in the Swan Princess: a fairy tale is born movie. It was revealed that her name is Queen Aubri and that she died after giving birth to Odette.
As far as the magic loophole. Usually in most series powerful magic always has a loophole. There as no such thing as a perfect spell. All magic has a weakness of some sort
Did you forget the beginning when the wizard lost his power and was banished by the Odette's father. The wizard swore he would get his power back some day and take everything the king held dear.
0:04 agreed. The Swan Princess is amazing. It is unironically my favorite movie. The fact that so few people remember it is wild. It's a perfect movie. I give it a 7/10. Yes, those statements seem contradictory, but if you think about it, it makes perfect sense.
9:24 her name is Bridget. We stan her in this household. I have a bunch of original cells from the movie and I have all the side princesses from Princesses on Parade, I have Derek and Odette Kissing, and I have Bridget dancing with the hot girl Rothbart made. She's living her best life and becomes Odette's lady in waiting in the second movie.
Also I've always theorized that Odette has been gone for well over a year. My friend worked on the 5th movie and Richard Rich said that Odette had been gone for a little over a year when Derek found her. But I feel like it may have been as much as 3 years Apparently he also said the Euberta took over administrative duties on King William's kingdom while they searched for a new heir to no avail. Personally, I think Odette had feelings for Derek even when they were younger, but Derek simply took longer to feel the same way. When she asked him what he liked about her, she expected that the years they spent together would make it easy for him to say something. I love how you don't hold back your skill at cards to spare my feelings. I love how you resonate with my people. I love how I feel when I'm around you. Derek was already showing jealousy when they were teenagers. It was clear that they liked each other. Odette was also clearly hoping that Derek would be able to say something before she left on the horse, but he didn't because he is a brussel sprout
For me, the most logical, and simple, explanation is that Odette was adopted by William. You might be thinking: But the narrator said "then... a child is born", he said that because would sound less poetic if "then... a child is brought". I belive the true Odette's parents were commoners in William's kingdom, but unfortunelly they died from some disease (wich was common in medievals times), one of the king's servents found Odette so brought her to the castle.
And if not for the opening scene where the King is pacing the halls like a father waiting for his wife to give birth, I would be inclined to agree with you.
Her name is Gretchen. She was named in the Christmas movie sequel. She may have been named in the sequels before, but I don’t remember if she was or not
@@bboops23 huh, my bad i misremembered then. I could have sworn in the Christmas one she said Gretchen but I might have mixed it up with another movie.
This movie was my kryptonite as a kid for some reason, probably because Odette was so pretty honestly my little closeted gay heart was all over her. I really like this theory, the only thing I would add is the king probably exiled her and through some other kind of magic or serious abuse made her lose her ability to speak coherently. Which would explain why she resents Odette so much.
in the most recent movie released what two weeks ago? Odette's mother is seen and her lack of appearance explained, her names Queen Aubrey and she dies in child birth. Queen Aubrey and Uberta are best friends ETC Queen Aubrey dies after Uberta has lost her husband and Uberta and William end up supporting each other in raising their children and ruling a kingdom as solo parents.
I kinda just thought the Queen had some sort of distain towards Odette, and actively tried to keep away from Odette my guess would be that she was in arranged marriage to William thus leading to horrible marriage?
Maybe the old woman got close to the king in the job of a jester. A lot of court jesters were mentally handicapped people, and from the sound of it, she’d fit right into the role. Plus it makes it more likely someone in the court would realize who this woman was.
I'm sure we'll get the answer in the next Swan princess movie who's already out. It's about queen Uberta's past. Maybe we'll see how she met Odette's mother and father? A bit late to talk about that. If it was showed after the third movie, ok but now? That doesn't make sense!
I think the new film actually reveals what happened to odettes mom and Derek’s dad but personally I want a mufasas ghost like scene between king William and their daughter alise
This is definitely an interesting theory. Truly the 1990s was an era of princess movies: Thumb balina was so stupid. The character, not the movie. She is lost and can't find her way home...yet one of her friends is a bird. Fly up high enough to say "Hey, look! I can see my house from here."
the narrator said and I quote “ The evil enchanted” sorry can’t spell his name “ her birth was of a little consequence to him” sorry never once did you use the word enchanter to describe or name him so me being a person that Think he is a great character I had to correct you on that.
I wondered as a kid that since Odette and Derek didn't want to get married why the King and Queen didn't get married instead. That way the kingdoms would still be connected but that way the kids could marry whoever they wanted. Even if the king and queen just stayed friends since other kids movies made it clear you could be forced to marry a rando even if you didn't like each other. They set it up too with them growing up together and not being attracted to each other during most of it.
Where is Derek's father as well? Also, if they really wanted to merge their kingdoms, why didn't their parents marry rather than force the two together? (Big brain energy right here!)
I absolutely love Swan Princess. I grew up with it, and still love it as an adult despite the fact that the plot and actions of the characters do not always make sense (honestly, if you overlook that and just roll with it the film is rather amusing). The music was really good in my opinion, particularly "Not my Idea". I actually have a soft spot for the 2nd and 3rd movie as well, and the song "Because I love her" is too good lol. They lost me after the 3rd movie. I learned recently they had SEVERAL sequels since then, but I simply cannot get on board with them. The art and animation quality appears to have gone downhill massively and seems more like a cash grab than anything else.
I've gotten deeper into Harry Potter books on th-cam.com/users/thefanily with the chapter-by-chapter videos, but I have a few for Goblet of Fire that I still haven't released yet and I need to get on that soon! lol
So, the vitriol for the stupidity of the plot can be blamed that this was written by Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky in like 1877. The barebones story of it all is that a prince who is being forced to marry(like all these princes in fairy tales do) comes upon a princess who transforms from a white swan to a human form on a lake at night because an evil wizard named Rothbard has cast a spell on her. He's got to tell the world about his love or else the spell will never be broken. Rothbard shows up to a ball he has the next night with his daughter Odile transformed to look like Odette. Prince says he will choose Odile which causes Odette's curse to remain, in such a sad state she kills herself. Prince follows suit which breaks the spell over the other swan maidens Rothbard had cursed.

I'm going to be honest I always thought that odette was adopted because she looks nothing like her father
And if not for the opening scene where the King is pacing the halls like a father waiting for his wife to give birth, I would be inclined to agree with you.
Eh I do see your point but you don’t have to resemble one parent to be related🤷♀️
You mean she was left on the doorstep?
Her name is Gretchen. She was named in the Christmas movie sequel. She may have been named in the sequels before, but I don’t remember if she was or not
Her name is Bridget. She's in 2nd and third movie
@@bboops23 huh, my bad i misremembered then. I could have sworn in the Christmas one she said Gretchen but I might have mixed it up with another movie.
@@DawnzeenaMcGill I have never seen the Christmas one, but maybe they renamed her
@@DawnzeenaMcGill so I googled it and I think that you definitely misremembered because I don't see any characters at all named Gretchen.
@@bboops23 alright. I’m so sorry about that, thanks for checking and letting me know
I will name my daughter Odette due to this amazing film. And I still have the VHS. All-time favorite along with Anastasia ❤
Funnily enough, the ballet which has no dialogue makes much more sense
And understanding the ballet 🩰 explains the plot holes that never get explained
I thought her mom died when she gave birth to her. Yeah odette is not a Disney movie folks!
I hope the posdible live-action one gets made. I'd love it.
No!
I loved these movies as a kid.
in the most recent movie released what two weeks ago? Odette's mother is seen and her lack of appearance explained, her names Queen Aubrey and she dies in child birth. Queen Aubrey and Uberta are best friends ETC Queen Aubrey dies after Uberta has lost her husband and Uberta and William end up supporting each other in raising their children and ruling a kingdom as solo parents.
I had the three Swan Princess movies on VHS.
Ooooh, look at you being old school cool! I love it!
I kinda just thought the Queen had some sort of distain towards Odette, and actively tried to keep away from Odette my guess would be that she was in arranged marriage to William thus leading to horrible marriage?
I'm curious about what happened to Derek's father.
Well it was mention queen Roberta was a widow so the king is definitely dead
Maybe he was sick.
With the next swan princess movie being a flashback of sorts, we’ll see if this theory rings true
I always thought her mother died in childbirth.
Or in the same year at least.
You don’t have to tell me! I always make it to the end!
What if, haggard was Odette's Aunt. Crazy because Rothbart Enchanted away her memory, and the missing ParentS ran away together?
Not all the songs are bad. I really like "This is not my idea of fun".
The swan princess has 5 sequels.
FIVE?! I knew about 2 others and they were straight to video so I don't even acknowledge them at this point. Jeez!
Wait 5? Are you certain?😅
Wait five? I only know of two
Five, that's cute. They just announced the 11th movie
This was an amazing movie I’m glad I’m not the only one who remembers it
I think the new film actually reveals what happened to odettes mom and Derek’s dad but personally I want a mufasas ghost like scene between king William and their daughter alise
I also wonder why the patents didn't get married.
This is definitely an interesting theory.
Truly the 1990s was an era of princess movies:
Thumb balina was so stupid.
The character, not the movie.
She is lost and can't find her way home...yet one of her friends is a bird.
Fly up high enough to say "Hey, look! I can see my house from here."
We will see her at thr 11th movie
Were are Nicky Alex katsopolis with Jesse and Becca they have show let me know please
the narrator said and I quote “ The evil enchanted” sorry can’t spell his name “ her birth was of a little consequence to him” sorry never once did you use the word enchanter to describe or name him so me being a person that Think he is a great character I had to correct you on that.
New The swan Princess movie with cursed animation comes so answers should come soon
Made it to the end. Thank you for sharing your theory!
Thanks for watching, I hope you enjoyed it!
The reason rothbart didn't become odette is it would be creepy and parents wouldn't like it
Can you make a theory on what happened to Plio's mother in Disney's Dinosaur?
This is an excellent theory!
How dare she insult the music of this movie Princesses on Parade is a certified banger. Offended. (jk)
lol, hey everything is SOMEBODY'S favorite! 😂
@@TheFangirlWatches LMAO!
I’ve always wondered this.
I only have watched this movie, the saga seems to get worse as it goes, especially when they revamped it to CGI. my god.
Yeah 😅
I'm thinking that maybe a surrogate situation happened? Just a thought
I love Swan Princess for all its flaws.
I have always wondered what happened to her mother, but assumed childbirth.
I liked the songs. They are fun.
I ❣️The Swan Princess. I like them all mostly. Are you not doing the Harry Potter book series anymore? Just wondering 🤔 💭 Made it till the end.
I've gotten deeper into Harry Potter books on th-cam.com/users/thefanily with the chapter-by-chapter videos, but I have a few for Goblet of Fire that I still haven't released yet and I need to get on that soon! lol
@@TheFangirlWatches The sooner you get these out of your system...the better. The creator just keeps getting worse.
@@TheFangirlWatches Thanks
She died. It's not that complicated.
And where I s Derek father?
No
Thart's super depressing!
I made it to the end!🙂
