On “My Car Story” we're in Rosemont IL at the Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals on 11-19-21.
We’re looking at a 1969 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 in Cortez Silver Paint. The car features the 427 CI ZL1 V8 all aluminum engine with a 4 Speed manual transmission.
The car's Owner is Don Martens Jr.. Don’s had this car since 1976. Don shares he knew he had something special when he purchased the car, but found out later it was a 1 of only 69 built like this. This car looks showroom new.

There was a fellow in my town who had this exact car in black. As we did a fair amount of street racing back in the early 70's, this was a car that was almost never beat. On the area behind the window moving to the roof, he had King Kong painted in graphics in blue. The only guy that gave him a close run was a guy with a 70 hemi cuda. Bringing back memories of great cars from my youth today! Thank you.

I have never seen a ZL-1 in Tuxedo black. If it exists I'd love to own it, find it and /or see it, my favorite color paint on a vehicle.
Wow, Mr. Martens really set the bar pretty high with this as his first car purchase! This ZL1 looks fantastic and it must be quite the attraction at all the car shows, and definitely if/when he drops the hammer. Thanks, Lou!

I absolutely love these COPO Camaros! What a feeling it must have been to be able to walk in and order one. The take it out on the weekend smoke everyone who was unsuspecting and had no idea what it really was until you turned it on

Years ago, a neighbor had a '69. Small block and 400 i think. this is '81.
Sure, the '67 and '68 were similar but the '69 was mostly it's own thing,
Heck, we had an '85 and that body ran for years,,,,saw one the other day. First time in years.

People talk about rare cars everyday, but as a Chevy guy this is the Pinnacle. This is as real as it gets. Copo Camaros are rare enough let alone the all-aluminum ZL1. I wonder how many of the 69 they produced are left? If you could find somebody willing to let one go I bet they wouldn't take any less than a million dollars for it

Hi, Lou! While you can find a Camaro at almost every car show you go to, it's not everybody whose first car is as ultra-rare as this one! Not surprising in this case, though, when the performance option cost half again as much as the base price of the car itself! At that rate Chevrolet was probably very lucky to even sell 69! I never knew anybody ever shipped a car to a dealer with the hubcaps in the trunk! Regardless, Don's car is bound to blow a lot of people away, whether parked in the driveway, at a car show, in a drag race or on the street!

Man that is like the Holy Grail...!!! Who ever did that car, did it perfect to a T...! Did you hear the door shut, absolutely no noise or clunk. Those rings alone in the trunk in the original packaging from 69...🤯 Those are a small fortune for just them! Best one so far except for that green 69-1/2 A-12 Super-Bee. The one with the flower vinyl roof. That one is my all time favorite....👍🏻💪🏻🏁

GM made a limited run anniversary edition of these ZL1 motors with some minor modern updates to them in 09' I think it was. Or maybe 04". My buddy ordered one and stuck it in his 67' Chevelle. Our other buddy ordered one and it sits on display in his mini musclecar museum. He has never ran it.
I like the fact this owner kept his car for so long. My first real car (non beater) was a 91' 1LE Z28 I got in 93'. Still have it! I grew up listening to almost every adult male I knew regretting that they sold or wrecked their 1st car so I decided as a child I would never sell my first.
I would have ordered my 69' ZL1 in orange with the 4 speed if I had that chance. Another great video Lou!

Moving from a 3 bedroom house to a single bedroom house, downsizing easier said than done.
Moving is all done so now it is time to catch up on your video's.

There were 2 ZL1 imported into Australia back in 1970 by the ace Aussie Race Car Driver
Bob Jane.
Bob Jane also run the largest passenger car tyre dealership in Australia but died in the last 2 years.
1 of the ZL1 which is Hugger Orange is parked up in the foyer of the dealership HQ near my house in
Port Melbourne.
I get to see this ZL1 just about every day. Worth goggle Bob Jane himself.

Interesting that of the 2 1969 ZL1's on your channel, they were both purchased in 1976 from the original owner, and one gentleman didn't even realize that he had an original gem.

Very nice Pizza GM history my father worked at the assembly plant in Norwood Ohio as a paint supervisor my high school graduation present what is a 427 cast iron I drag raced it religiously for four and a half years never wrecked it never killed nobody see the grace of God I enjoyed the ultimate heartbeat of America and live to talk about it and not regret it many stories to be told good luck to all those Patriot Americans we have in America so many stories

I have photos from Barrett Jackson Scottsdale of a ZL1 looked just like this. I believe it sold for 775k at the time but that was awhile back 10 years or so.

Two were produced. Car #55 (well documented, original condition ZL-1 over the years) was a Rally Sport, in Lemans Blue with white vinyl top & ivory interior; and car # 68,RS ZL-1 in Cortez Silver with Black interior, owned by Craig Jackson.
I wish that it was outside rather than an enclosed venue. It doesn't do the cars justice by being stuck inside. I wanted to see this Camaro perform, but only to get just an engine start. JMO

Ok on Highway. Basic package / BIG motor.
They came with a 4.11 rear gear, not a highway friendly ratio...
every year of their productions i contend the firebird was always better looking

M22 was an option but not ordered on the Gibbs cars. Some of the other 19 ZL1 cars ordered by other dealers were ordered with the M22 trans.
300 lbs of weight savings. And 100 more ponies for 4 grand extra . Wow
