- "Jeremy Clarkson meets this opinionated American Chevrolet restorer ready to give him a run for his money...
This is a channel from BBC Studios who help fund new BBC programmes. Service information and feedback: www.bbcstudios...
Just did some research on Bill Clemment ("Clemments" is not correct), he's quite off the radar now but not dead (it seems) and the company shown here in Lubbock, Texas actually closed down soon after this was shown sometime just after the mid 1990's. In 1995, he bought the entirety of a nearby radio station in the same town and devotes his life to that, selling almost his entire collection in auctions at around 1998/1999.
His company that was ChevyCraft (shown here) is all but gone only selling a few odd Chevy things, ironically on eBay (obviously through a computer). He was done by the FBI not long ago for making and selling counterfit VIN plates and there's still an ongoing debate if he owns/owned one of Buddy Holly's cars that he was or is trying to sell.
You can still see the old building there, still painted white and the billboard, although gone still has the holes from when it was mounted above the door and windows. The chain fence is still there along with the barred windows and door. The sign on the gate still exists and the "THINK" sign on the top of the building is now attached elsewhere and can also still be seen (circa 2013).
Currently he is still the owner of the local classic 50's rock and roll radio station, playing mostly Buddy Holly's music (being he was born there).
+R33Racer that is one unromantic and depressingly mundane story of a persons life
Apparently, he only owned the radio station up to 2015. Not sure where he is now.
He passed in October 2019.
THANK YOU Staticclism! You hit the nail on the head!
We should have that last law in England. Awesome.
I don't care much for the second part of this clip, But the beginning with the El Camino, I really like. Clarkson is very opinionated about american cars and I find it amazing to see him enjoy himself in a true american classic and personal favourite.
@NobleM15fan tell you what,,, i like the guys honesty
@Vauxhall94 yes and they were also death traps.
It's just me speaking, but I think things are only decided by gunfire in the movies. I would have a hard time defending the person that shot and killed a 14 year old kid that was stealing his lawn chair.
I respect your opinion and will defend your right to say it, but we must agree to disagree.
Thanks for your comment.
I'm frightened
@GunsOfThePhoenix
Anyone who knows anything about cars...brand new (or old aswell if they're rare) parts can cost a lot of cash.
wait hang on a moment, how can you only get 400bhp from a 7L engine?!
This man is about as american as possible. I love it.
cosworth?
Is he still alive
I love that guy.
Extremes like him need to exist.
This was back when Clarkson thought he could make a few quid off of pretending he liked Americans. Now it's just Hamster.
Eh...I'm the most emotionally immature person I know, but Jeremy really does seem to like that "VEE-AY' MO-DURR" in this clip and much of his other work.
(Even I agree with some of his criticisms of Americans. Many of us are obese [myself included], and we bastardized the concept of the Autobahn.)
Look at Jeremy J. Cheeseburger Clarkson III liking American muscle cars
Don't *EVER* let that fat, stupid, fuzzy-headed, crap-ass limey hear the end of it, either. ;)
None of you here understand the term "Tongue in cheek" do ya?
I like this guy! I pretty much agree with everything that builder has to say!
I think this guy is hurting chevrolets reputation more than helping it
This guy is hilarious. People shouldn't take him so seriously. He's obviously just having fun messing with people.
God Bless Texas! B-)
I've lived in America my entire life, and I've never met somebody like that.
Clearly you haven’t lived in the south. There are plenty of people like him down here
What a Legend
Haha....Im covered in tatoo's, and every time i ve been to texas, which is quite a bit, ive gotten nothing but people comin over to look and compliment. this guy is just nuts. really nuts.
As a Ford guy through and through, I want to congratulate this man for painting the picture of a typical Chevy owner and helping our image in comparison.
As a brit, I have to congratulate this guy.
His hard work in perpetuating the stereotypical *look down at your belt and 'oh shoot, that's muh nayme'* kind of person.
DesiDude297 yet you'd still have an American made car over a British made car.
Robert Gary Unless its something like an Aston Martin, hell yeah, Brits only make good performanxe cars, not regular common cars.
DesiDude297 British make great cars that look good when they are sitting in the garage being repaired. Which is all the time.
I find that chevy guys, ford guys, mopar guys, and whatever you like are all the same. I don't understand anyone who can't see beauty past a badge. Especially pre 1970, fords and chevys were very much the same cars and no one was really better than the other. They were all very similar in quality, performance, comfort, and looks. I own and drive a variety of makes and models of vintage cars so I speak from experience
This guy apparently restored and owns Buddy Holly's original '58 Impala.
@bellcord
That's the best law i ever heared of, and i wish that law would count in every goddamn western country in the world, because almost every crime is commited by someone who doesn't belong in western countries
all US v8 where crippled by there clean air laws, in '76 Cadillac made a 8.2 L V8 that made only 190HP back in '70 it made two times that..
I'll stick with my brilliantly-made, excellently-engineered, quality-brimming Toyota, thank you very much. You can take your shoulder-dwelling Chevrolet and, well, you know. He exudes nearly everything I dislike about stereotypical southern American men...but to each his own, I guess.
Clarkson slams modern American cars, but he clearly has a soft spot for classic American cars. They are simply fun to drive.
Ahhhh. The stereotypes this man holds so dear.....
this guy deserve's his own show on discovery.
Might be a bigot but hell...I'd trust him with my car, just as I would trust a cold, unfeeling surgeon and concentrates on performing a operation instead of pretending to be my friend.
*welcome to America*
Ford backwards.
Driver
Returns
ON
FOOT !!
Im glad to be a fellow Texan !
Hahaha! The guy he was interviewing at the end that was rockin those clazzic blues shades has the right mentality!
American Muscle
@82Echo411 Oh yeah, gotta love a Big block. I've always built small blocks, high reving ones. But I recently bought a 454 I'm tearing into and building for my ole truck. I figure if its gonna drank gas I'm gonna make a lot of power with every drop of it! lol.
That restorer guy was awesome.
Bill your a true Texan 🇨🇱🤠
You talking about the one playing from 0:40 - 0:55 If you are then that song is "Little Deuce Coupe" Sung by the "Beach Boys"
This guy's basically an American version of Clarkson.
its basicley a chevelle ss with an extended backside
It's when Clackson had hair!!
Jeremy thinks the Beach Boys are ZZ Top?
@Vallecaucanisimo No more free business, government owned and controlled banks, ignoring Iran and Venezula- man, what a great country. I'm young and Barack Obama promised me education. Where could it be? Maybe I need to know the secret handshake.
i really would like to meet this guy, has the same attitudes towards criminals as i have. may have differences regarding computers and views on cars though.
This guy is my hero!!!
Bill your a true Texan 🇨🇱🤠
What a nice man.
Oh, well I don't have any idea...sorry.
Clarkson uncovered a proto-trump voter.
Yeah, his brain is the reason the maximum speed is as it is. Plus it is the reason why he hates computers. His brain can't work out how to use them. Let alone process all the information coming at him (which is the same reason for the maximum limit... brain has a too high latency for it to send a signal to evade or brake before accidents start to happen).
lol
Some statistics...... Porsche GT3 - 0-60 - 4.0 secs... Max speed - 194 mph... 435 BHP.... new price $112,000 >>>>>>>> 2004 Corvette Z06 - 0-60 - 3.9 secs... Max Speed 187 mph... 404 BHP.... new price $56,000. Z06 Vette gets 18 mpg city; 28 hwy. Porsche buys 7 mph more top speed for $60,000 more. Is there really any decision to make between the two?
speed limits here on highways are normally 70 durring the day and 65 at night unless your on a farm road which is basicly a 2 lane highway its 55 0r 60 most of the time. just depends on what county your in. but you dont see many cops on farm roads either so who gives a shit about speed limits.
oh would you jackwagons stop. this is about cars. im an american and i despise american cars. i just baught a 323is to go with my jetta and 318ti. dont waste money on american vehicles. that being said i have a1996 ford ranger standard cab with the 2.3 litre 4 cylinder engin to haul my motorcycle {yamaha fz6 2004} and i now haveto put yet another 4r44e trans in it because ford is okay with subpar design. american motor companys are okay with loose tolerances on their parts so they wear faster,
european semi trucks don't need an oil change for at least 70.000 miles, and the engines are fuel efficient, because the need to, because a gallon cost about 8 dollars. Thats why they have engines with alot of hp an torque, because that way they only
need to run om low rpm's. Now i also prefer the good old simple engines from the past, because like you said, they can be fixed with a hammer, but it's not economical anymore because of the amount of fuel the burn each mile.
aka more shit that can break and cost thousands to fix. ive worked on older semis. you can practically hit it with a hammer to make it run again. I would rather have a reliable truck than one that could make me coffee while im driving and provide sat nav at the same time. Yes I am what you would call simple but that just means I dont try to make life more complicated than it already is.
and there's also a big difference between measuring american and european horse power, because the real horsepower from american cars are way less when you calculate it to european horsepower. Another thing is that bmw did race with a 1000hp 1,5 liter engine in the 70's, so we europeans can get far more real hp out of each ci/cc, than the americans.
americans made great cars in the 50,s, 60's, and early 70's, but only great looking cars, because the road handling (not that they have any) sucks
@yinyengz515
Texas law does allow for protecting your property by lethal force.
As you might guess there is very little larceny done at night in the state of Texas.
In North Carolina someone can enter your home, steel all your money and jewelry, and you do not have the legal right to detain them, make a citizen's arrest, or point a firearm at them. Even if they pull a gun on you, if they turn and walk away you have no legal right to shoot or pursue them.
I'm all for the laws of Texas!
actualy this Chevy Restorer guy has a point about defending ur goods.
On recored the average car retorer cant afford to loose a micro second of time with some jackass thief that thinks he can just waltz in and steal what he do'sent own.
And Cash? heheeh if i owned any car with a classic Chevy badge XD u can bet ur bottom american ass dollar i wouldent mind gettin it restored by this guy.
@ihaveairlockers You say that with such a condescending tone, as to imply that in terms of education and intelligence, America is on par with the lowest of the low. In fact, the opposite is true. Education has slipped a lot in the USA but news headlines have a knack for focusing on the worst. Truth is, for the most part, schooling in America is just as good as it needs to be. As for the passports, why would Americans need one, when everything they could ever want is already within their borders?
@2491cc kinda hard to do that since it's a fairly big melting pot of people, customs, and believes. It's not like UK, with only 94 thousand square miles and 92% of the population is white. USA has 4 million square miles and 310 million people. It's one of the worlds largest ethnically diverse nations from all the immigration from many countries. If you can find "anyone who represents" all that, lemme know.
@jamesandrew2000 not really funny mate. But I'm glad you can laugh while the most prosperous country in the world slowly gets worn down by banal economic policies that originated, and should have stayed" with big government obsessed countries in Europe in the 19th and early 20th century.
Socialism is the dinosaur that is on its last legs before American voters oust it completely in the coming elections both in 2010 and 2012.
built yes. designed....no so much. The camry you get in US is the same as the rest of the world with the parts moved around. Likewise in the classic days of the Colts/Sapporos/Celica Supras/Accords etc most were made and designed in japan and exported to the rest of the world (US was the most major market obviously).
Likewise the American stuff is also made overseas - Viva/Lacetti in korea etc
what are you talking about the vette gets up to 30 mpg or better and its one of the toughest sports cars known to man you can drive your vette to the track and thrash it and thrash it and it will still be begging for more then drive it home again . The only people in europe that know how to build a car are the Germans But I want to see a M3 against a ZO6 the vette 505hp the m3 ahh only 414hp M3 weight what over 3500 pounds the Vette 3190lbs so please read the facts an M3 will never beat a ZO6
well thanks for calling me dumbass- thats mature- second i live in the EU so domestic is not US made for me. Thirdly no I wouldn't want a corvette, let alone a viper over a so called 'foreign' car such as a Mercedes, Audi, BMW, VW, Honda, Infiniti or Lexus, all of which far surpass the medicore rubbish coming from GM and Ford- for heavens sake Ford USA need Ford of Europe (germany) to design a proper car for them, even the GT was designed mostly in Europe- wake up
I can't understand anyone having a reverence of American cars, even more so GM, even the more sophisticated Americans don't buy them, the rich ones would rather be in a German car or a Lexus and the middle class drive VW, Honda or Toyota - crazy to buy an inferior product just because it's domestic, especially when so many of the German, Japanese and Korean cars are actually made in the US.
I think Texas is the only state that allows the use of deadly force to protect personal property. However, all of the states allow for the use of deadly force when a person reasonably believes that they are in threat of death or great bodily harm. In many states, including Michigan, where I live, if someone breaks into your home, then it is a rebuttable presumption that they are there to inflict death or great bodily harm.
A Yankee is one born and raised east of the Mississippi River and North of the River Ohio. A damned Yankee is one born and raised east of the Mississippi and north of the Ohio, but moves down South and won't go home. A goddamned Yankee is one born and raised east of the Mississippi and north of the Ohio, moves down South, won't go home, and constantly talks about how great the North is.
you see, i share clarksons veiws completely. a car's got to make you feel good when you're driving, it has to be informative about what's going on under the wheels, it has to respond to your commands the way you expect it to, and above all else, if a single button or lever is placed inconveniently, you should not buy it.
seriously, something like that can mess up your entire day :)
there's a difference between making a car and making a fridge. ford's engineers no longer seem to understand that.
Well where the hell DO you live, some kind of magical fantasy hybrid-powered eco-land? Maybe a self contained artificial environment somewhere on a deserted island? If you ever stepped outside your house/trailer/jail/dome you'd come to the quick conclusion that, in fact, quite a few people desire a vehicle of larger scale than what you suggested. Furthermore, while you might not know anyone who would want a larger car, I'm beginning to get the impression that you don't know anybody at all.
goku1940 if you drove an actual performance car you would understand. i understand your thing about gas milage but you have to drive a sports car or powerful fast car that driving is so much more than just getting place to place for some people. Also just to say that a BMW 8 cylinder versus the toyota prius around a track with the same amount of fuel full acceleration the BMW will be more efficient and go farther. Just an idea about cars.
The N360 also broke down a lot, weren't comfortable and cost a lot to repair
To say a car is 'a piece of shit' purely because its not economical is blatantly ignorant. Different cars are designed for different things. A Porsche is extremely comfortable and enjoyable to drive and happens to go very very fast. But it can't transport more than two people. Hondas aren't much better with seats, are slow, and is only more frugal on fuel. On what basis do you think this makes hondas far superior cars?
@motoxxx101
01 ??? WHAT??? I know...im wondering if he resotrs pontiacs..and to the guy i reponded to was sayingg something about ford being coo land i simly said pontiac ..HOW??? did u get new pontiacs out of that?
Nice cars, not going to get involved in the politics here. Would love to see America one day just to admire all the old classic cars.
Driving Route 66 in an El Camino would be 1 of those things to do before dying :P
last time we drove in TX, speed limit was 75 on the motorway so what's this guy complaint? I was disappointed in not seeing cars and didn't care about this guy and his viewpoint. CARS please, not rubbish :)
Basically he meant assemble them together. Or put them together. Or fix them together. Ahh, whatever..
I'm from Washington, a blue state. Our taxes and liberal government are so oppressive that we have one of the lowest unemployment rates in the country, highest levels of education and income, and property values are resurging as educated and creative people from all over the world move here to work in tech and science and start new businesses. It's hell, I tell you!
a mechanic near my house is 10 times worse than this guy all he does is talk mad shit about imports and the whole "buy american" bullshit. I'll buy american when it can match the quality and reliability of most other imports. The only american cars I would ever consider would be fords because they didn't need a bailout so they must be doing something right.
umm, don't get it - saw this clip, then downloaded the clarkson's motorworld series, watched the texas episode this excerpt is supposed to be from... to find that it is not there; there's the chevy el camino scene and then instead of seeing this guy, I see the space shuttle scene... so what's this from then?
@dcpvmax
That is over-generalized and well full of crap. Alot of manufacturers around the world were either bailed out by their government or are provided with direct assistance from their government. Obama doesn`t own GM either. Last time I checked the United States Department of the Treasury is not Obama.
If youve ever driven one you would no I worked at a GM dealership for awhile and the Base vettes we had on the lot were averaging over 30 mpg it all depends on the driver really but we wanted to see how high we could get the avg up to so we babied it every where we went in it to show the customers that they werent big gas hogs
I guess most people wherever you live think that way... though I still have no idea where you live. I do know people all around the world are fascinated with horsepower, it obviously isn't confined to America or the large majority of high performance cars wouldn't be coming from overseas like they are.
Glad you guys are getting such a good show.
drive-by-wire is exactly why they're good. im a fan of modern cars but I drove my dads 928-S once. registered 1984 No computer aids at all, 4.8L V8, goes like a bastard and i have to say there's no better feeling than drifting a car on a backroad knowing that it was all 100% your own ability keeping it sideways on the road and not sideways in a hedge.
heck yeah! I'm from Cali and im not gay. Im in America and im underweight. I live in Stockton California with the worst crime rate in the state (including L.A.) and I don't commit crimes. i don't care to pull out of Iraq, i actually want to join the navy, even if i just mop floors and peel potatoes. so wtf is up with stereotypes pplz!
@TierodMcslush Hi there, the guy in question co-hosts a hugely popular tongue-in-cheek, UK motoring show called "Top Gear". Jeremy Clarkson sometimes gets into hot water with some of his comments, but to be honest, I don't think he gives a .... Well worth checking out the show. Regards.
@ihaveairlockers Was there ever a point when I said or even implied that the U.S. is best? What I said is that it's satisfactory enough to satisfy the needs of its citizens. Oh, and by all the research I've done, the U.S. ranks an average of 11th, so not quite 30.
Basically, the guy said that as long as youre not a douchebag, politician, heroin addicted thief, or a Ford owner, he's probably not got a problem with you. Hell, he even tolerated Clarkson.
I have a hard time finding fault with that. If you break into my place, you'll leave in a bag as well.
o but hillbilly i am not im just a lone construction worker who uses ...you guessed it... a truck
and i get the need for better fuel economy which is why ive retrofitted my old pick up to run off propane
o and that "sayin" is a song
american pie

I love classic American cars, but I have to say this man is definitely the reason we Americans have such a bad rap these days. People from around the world see people like this and think we're all just a bunch of conceited closed-minded imbeciles. This was funny, though.
I don't know, Clarkson seemed to be taking a liking to him. You have to respect a guy who does work like that.
I certainly don't have a problem with anything he said, although I'm sure if you kept the camera on him a few more minutes his inner Klansman would come shining through.
@Vallecaucanisimo not gonna start a politics fight but look at Congress now. Miss Republicans yet?
@LeBartman I agree with you!
only trucks you mean, because your muscle cars are only good in a straight line. And when it comes to semi trucks, europeans beat the american ones, because european trucks are way more fuel efficient, and packed with al the latest technological stuff.
we can drive better than you can. we have plenty of powerful cars and we don't need 10L engines to produce 1 hp, we can get > 200hp out of 1.5 L engines.
'89 chevy camaro 190 hp, 5L. American engines have low specific output, i.e low power per litre
@Chevypower265 - I grew up in a Ford family (father in ad biz), but the NJ 454 was a hoot. For a while my brother in law had a BMW Bavaria that was nice, but his mom's was fine until 1st gas crisis + 55 shutting down the interstates.
@ihaveairlockers Well we can sit and argue about America to no end, but I live here, so of course I'm going to defend my country. But I think one thing that we can both agree on is the fact that Clarkson is, without a doubt, a legend.
I love all American cars but, saying all Ford's are bad? I beg to differ:
Example 1- Gran Torino
Example 2- Boss Mustang
Example 3- the overall V8 Winsor engine
Example 4- The Flathead V8 (note-used by Bonnie And Clyde)
And the examples go on.
@khenry1991 I agree with him only on the Ford part LOL! I would have a positive opinion of Ford, except I unfortunately used to own one. To their credit though, they were the only US automaker that didn't go whining to the government for a bailout.
yeah... Well, I cant say I agree with much of what he stands for, but I can agree with the speed limits. Fuck 55. Hell, fuck 65. 80mph is a comfortable cruising speed for me. 125 on the straights should be acceptable too if you have brakes that work.
That guy is funny...
...as in needs to be committed and stop giving the rest of the world bad stereotypes about us.
Narrowmindedness like that is yet another reason I will never return to Texas. That, and they're the worst drivers I've ever seen.
