    Filling up your glider with 200 liters of water in the desert seems quite luxury to me @Stefan Langer

    • @SteFly
      @SteFly  2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      With the heavy powered gliders you can only carry about 100 liters of water and you usually land with ballast, so that you don´t need to refill every day. For sure it is somehow critical in a dry area like Namibia.

    I flew Cessna 210 for Scenic Air and Wilderness back in 2009/10 and 2013/14. Also did gliding before my training for 2 seasons, but Belgium is not really a glider paradise... My office is a 747 now but I do miss Namibia every day. I plan to finally take vacation there next year. Is it possible to go up with an experienced pilot just for the experience, not as a student? Very nice video. I'm sure Bitterwasser also employs local people and helps where it can. Anyone can see the standard of living is quite a contrast, but this is 'normal' all over the world. Most forms of tourism are good for a poor regions as it brings in money to country at minimum, and creates jobs. We can't do it all at once. Namibia is a great country with a great mix of people and is trying hard to improve itself. Haven't been there in a while but at least that's what I like to believe.

    ... it definitely was not ~ 45 years ago. A tad of a bit different for sure too. No GPS, no plastic gliders (all metal), no engines on gliders, no meteorologist at hand. No 1000 Km tasks either. But lots of fun, even if driving the whole night getting a glider back early enough to be flown the next day by the next pilot. Nice video, Stefan! 👍

    • @darkredvan
      @darkredvan 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@SteFly BTW regular tasks at that time were 300 Km and 500 Km triangles. Does not seem a lot, but available gliders were Let Blanik and Pilatus B4. Add to this that you had to try to reach Bitterwasser quite hard, so that the other pilot could use „your“ glider the next day. I was only a mediocre pilot at that time, did one 300 Km training flight with the Blanik (not official, with a little psychological help by my father), and a 300 Km in a B4. Those were happy days ... you are doing very well, appreciate your accomplishments! 👍🙏

      @SteFly  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Nicklas, I´m using the Lumix Leica 12 - 60 mm lens during flight and I store it in a selfmade camera bag most of the time. The bag is not fixed, at rough conditions I put it somehow below my arm. It´s always annoying to store all the camera equipment in the cockpit.
