Not real air-to-air fighter, L-159B is just a combat trainer, while in L-159A version is light combat attack fighter for attacks against ground targets (infantry, tanks, cars, trucks, armoured carrier etc.). It's similar plane to new russian Yak-130. Sometimes L-159 is compared to A-10 or Su-25/39, but these are more armoured.

Does it carry a gun? Even if only in the ground attack role, a gun might come in handy.

it's not jet trainer it's the 39 that's the jet trainer l 159 is a light attack.
The B designates 2 seats, two seats are usually good for training.
The L-159 is done in single and double seats version. I think the Iraqi army uses them against terrorists.
