    Not only one of the best Van Halen tracks, but also that of the entire MTV 1980s.

    The Van Halen bros and David Lee roth were pure dynamite!

    Despite their happy smiles and party image, Van Halen was anything but when the album '1984' was released and 'Jump' became a #1 single... Guitarist Eddie Van Halen wanted to play more keyboards and wrote the music for 'Jump' in 1981 but singer David Lee Roth hated it and refused to sing on it... Finally in 1983, Eddie Van Halen put his foot down - 'Jump' was going on the album and so was another keyboard heavy song "I'll wait"... This was Van Halen going into pop music and the '1984' album was a huge hit on MTV and radio. It sold 10 million copies in the US... It was also the final studio album by the original Van Halen.
    Touring into 1985, it was clear that singer David Lee Roth was not a happy camper... While Eddie Van Halen started writing new music, Roth decided to release an EP of cover songs solo - 'Crazy from the heat' in '85, hoping that it would be made into a movie w/ him as the star.
    Frustrated by his lack of interest in the next Van Halen album, the band parted ways w/ David Lee Roth and soon got veteran rocker Sammy Hagar to work on the new tracks... Hagar signed on to become the singer of Van Halen in 1986 and their next album '5150' became their first #1 charting record in the US.
    David Lee Roth launched his solo career in 1986 w/ the album "Eat 'em and smile"... which sold platinum w/ the singles - 'Yankee Rose' ... "Goin' crazy"... but Roth's career floundered by the 90's.

    This song really does something to me. I was 25 when it came out. It's so interesting to see
    younger people react so positively to it. I think it has this nostalgic aura to it that no matter what your age, it hits you in the feels. There's something about the 80's...definitely one of the funnest decades
    for music. I WANT MY MTV!!

    Van Halen has always been awesome. But can we, for a moment, acknowledge David Lee Roth's vocals, pure athleticism and entertainment value?

    • @djknox2
      @djknox2 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I have the same argument with some friends for decades. For me, no David Lee Roth, no Van Halen. Now they're touring without Eddie or David - what a joke.

    • @MarioCrosby
      @MarioCrosby 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      Vocals? Good at best. Sammy runs circles around him vocally. Athleticism and entertainment absolutely, not too many better than Dave.

    • @williesteele4503
      @williesteele4503 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@MarioCrosby I agree. He wasn't the strongest vocally, but for a front man he was one of the best. One heck of an entertainer. He's still in great shape for his age.

      I love Diamond Daves vocals and believe he’s had a rough deal with criticism of his voice over the years. He was the perfect contrast to Eddie’s highly technical wizardry with his rough, bluesy vocals and crazy swagger. And yes, athleticism matched by none in the rock world at the time

    IMO this song should always be played with the title track, "1984." It's a keyboard instrumental, something like a minute long, and it leads right in on the album.

    Eddie Van Halen, for me, it´s the best guitarist of all time.
    By the way, those jumps by David Lee Roth (the vocalist), are so well performed due to he´s a martial arts expert.

  • @SP-gz5jx
    @SP-gz5jx หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Roth’s message is very simple: Women should take a chance (“Jump”) and get to know a guy even though he’s not the best looking she’s ever seen. “Peek in” to the guy’s personality “to get to what’s real, instead of just superficial looks.

    Glad you are reacting to this video! It might interest you to know I went to see Van Halen in concert in 1984 in Albuquerque, NM and they performed this song almost identical to this video live on stage, kicks & splits included! It was a fantstic concert, one of the best I have ever seen. Came away with a whole new respect for Eddie's prowess on the guitar. Understand I was always a Van Halen fan, had all their albums, but man seeing them live was a whole new experience! Best part was my older brother paid for the tickets as his teenage daughter & her friend wanted to go see the concert & he did not want them going alone so I was their chaperone. Once they discovered I was a bigger Van Halen fan then they were they did not mind going with me. My niece just thought her uncle was pretty cool! I never was a big Sammy Hagar fan and I thought their early stuff with DLR was much better. Yeah Dave has kind of lost his voice and he is an egotistical jerk but it is what it is, they were much better with Dave on vocals!

    I have heard that Roth was not excited about this song and that this was part of the arguments in the band at that time. Basically Roth told Eddie "you're a guitar player" and didn't like the fact that Eddie wanted to do more keyboards. Eddie was right, he is Eddie. RIP Eddie. I think "Right Now" is the best VH song EVER IMO. The live version from 1995 Molsen amphitheater might be the best performance of Right Now.

    Here's something a little different. I really like Alex Van Halen playing the drums on this track. Speaking of drummers, I cam across The Mad Drummer awhile back. He's part of a band called Rick K. And The All-Nighters. They do largely 60's, but also 70's and 80's music. Their drummer, Steve Moore, is absolutely crazy. He is an outstanding drummer doing all this crazy stuff, and never misses a beat. You have to see it to believe it.: th-cam.com/video/0ethgCtw9ao/w-d-xo.html

    When this video first time was shown on MTV it divided the hard rock fans into two camps! First one was the old school or maybe ortodox. Anyway they freaked out when the saw their guitar hero or in som circles guitar god Eddie van Halen playing on a Synth! Now why would that be so bad one might wonder? Back in the '80s at least in Europe in general you either listened to hard rock or synth/electronic music. Needless to say there was some real hate from both groups. Ok back to EVH and the Jump video so the ortodox fans were outraged while the other more like moderate thought it was cool. They thought like EVH is still an amazing guitarist this changes nothing and besides that Synth riff works for the song.

    Van Halen was not a hair band. That term came about for the late 80’s metal bands. Van Halen’s debut album was 1978, a long time before the term hair band came to be. They were hugely popular in the late 70’s through the mid 80’s with David Lee Roth. Even after Sammy Hagar joined in ‘85 they were still not a hair band. They were never a metal band and certainly never a hair band.
    Important distinctions when it comes to 80’s music.
