- Every time I've needed to sharpen my chisels I've never had my whetstones near. You can improvise, and get razor sharp chisels without the expensive stones. Every carpenter carries sand paper and the only thing you would need to add to your kit is buffing compound. Everything else can be improvised in the field.
Keeping your woodworking chisels sharp is much easier then sharpening them from scratch. Maintaining chisel sharpness can be done on a simple wooden strop. Don't underestimate the power of stropping compound😀

This method of sharpening works beautifully! I did not have a 150 sandpaper, so I used a 120 and then a 220 sandpaper. After I used a black compound from Craftsman. The results are nice. Thanks for sharing this video.

An offcut of mdf makes a good hard strop and is pretty easy to get hold of, good work on the vids👍🏻
That has to be the sharpest chisel I've ever seen. And with the simplest, and cheapest method yet. I'm gonna try this with mine. As well, maybe use on my wood carving knives.

Used this today because I couldn't get an installed wood beam down to the table saw for a dado notch, it took 10 min because my sandpaper was worn but it was sooo satisfying to hand pressure peel the notch away with the chisel and get an AC unit istalled .....thanks a ton....and you are absolutely right about the pull back being easier for me than forward. I thought I was the only one to strop directly on wood so good to see you do it.
When I stropped on leather I must have done it wrong, the edge got less sharp.

You taught me a NEW and effective sharpening technique - again.
Great video, black emery is my go to compound for practical edge maintenance. If you spray a small puddle of WD-40 on the board or strop it will readily dissolve the compound binder making for nice even coverage and also acts as a cutting fluid.

There is a gizmo with a clamp and a wheel that is used for sharpening chisels. I've had one for years and it was a worthwhile purchase. I use chisels a lot in my work. The gizmo works especially well for keeping the chisel square and always the same angle. Love your videos.
You could make a jig out of a block of wood and a couple of wheels from a pine box derby kit to keep your angle.

This is my preferred method, for I love a scary sharp chisel but I do not love the price of diamond plates and honing guides. I got a granite tile sample from Home Depot for about $2 -$3, it’s about 99.9% perfect flat, works well for sharpening on
I picked up a piece of float glass. Extremely flat and Cheap.
I got a piece of black granite tile from Lowes for a dollar and I use it for some flattening

Hi! I was using 3 different grit sandpapers (400, 1000, 2500) for sharpening everything from kitchen knives to chisels and these last for 1,5 years. They were still cutting the metal but I replaced them since there was a lot of cuts on their surfaces...

Consider using the piece of wood that has a slight bow to it, for the 'top' or short side to create a very slight convex edge. I use a vertical sander gently, to flatten the tip and slowly move the tip to the top of the sander where the drum is. This adds a very small convex edge just at the tip. I've found this aids in honing or deburring. It's crazy how sharp a chisel can get.

all your videos are always entertaining and have great sharpening tips . keep it up brother maybe if you have time could you do a video on best angle to clamp a knife in kme sharpening system to get the most even edge geometry on your knife. because even when I turn a knife to follow the imaginary line from Hilt to tip I still whined up getting my Edge that looks way too fat towards the tip and it drives me crazy to not have an equal width Edge on my knives it just feels like I have to spend way too much time towards the tip to get it to bring the material down to match the rest of the knife

Bravo! A perfect method for a carpenter in the field! By the way, do different methods of sharpening affect how well the edge can take the abuse (framing hammer beating and prying on it?) that a framing chisel would receive?
The short answer is yes. A more refined edge, say one sharpened to 8000-10000 grit will last longer and take more abuse than one sharpened to 150 grit. There's a lot of other factors at play though. Type of wood, steel type, also play a roll.

It gets expensive if you do a lot of sharpening. The finer grits are expensive and don't last long.
I rather use leather now 2x4 is more expensive than a pound of leather
So I have 50, 120, 220 sandpaper and up to 12000 micro mesh and green and white stripping compound so should I go through grits and both compounds in my strop or is it not even worth it?

I look for a burr. When theres a burr you know you've apexed.

I just bought a Spyderco Tenacious. I have a 100 and 240 grit smith stone. I also ordered a strop. Is this all I need to get it sharp or should I get a finer stone? Thank you!
Robert Andi It depends how sharp you want to get it. If you wanna get something super sharp you might want to get a 600/1000 combination wet stone and if you want even more sharpness a 3000/8000. 240 grit is pretty coarse.
240 is enough for most tasks. Draw cuts are very, very good with that grit. And if you stop it, it is still sharp enough to shave arm hair. (I strop with metal polishing cream over wood, and it works fine.)
Hi. I use 1.5" short wood carving knives with straight blades and a zero grind (flat from spine to cutting edge, NO bevel) I have tried resharpening several after constant stropping to keep an edge but cant get a good flat grind by hand methods. I have diamond stones and drill disk sanders to use. Is there some kind of jig or hand technique to help get the zero grind?. Can you come up with a DIY jig or something please. ATB.

A $10 sharpening jig will help tremendously here. Also, if you need to regrind the whole edge, go to the grinder and then to the papers. Watch Rob Cosman or Samuri Carpenter on Sharpening. They'll clear up a point or two for you. And remember that you can sharpen even crap steel to shave hair or cut a few curls. Its how it performs doing real world tasks and what it takes to resharpen that is the test. My old Stanleys and Craftsman chisels take a few strokes on a 1000 grit Trend diamond plate and a few on a strop with 1 micron DMT diamond paste to stay at a razor edge. My LNT chisels get the same treatment for cabinets and furniture. But 150 grit is just adding work except maybe your first time. Start at maybe a 600 or 800 grit. And only really need to flatten about an inch or so of the back. Ruler trick helps there. See Rob Cosman's video if you don't know what that is.
This is a quick and dirty way to sharpen in the field, not and end all be all. Check out my other videos on sharpening.
Just checked out your 2019 system. The diamond stone is a good one to flatten any waterstones you've got including your ceramic.. Your diamond stone should be flat and not dish out with use. For out in the field use I carry a Trend 300/600 grit diamond credit card and a small strop with a bit of diamond paste. Usually don't have the time during the day to do all of what you were doing and need a super sharp edge. My advice is to skip the Harbor Freight chisels and get some decent used ones that are restorable and use them. Get a honing guide that keeps your chisels at a correct angle to the stone for the bevel and square. And don't wait forever to refresh the edge. I usually strop a few passes at lunch and then at then of the day. Try some lapping fluid on the diamond stone - not WD-40 though. A diamond stone should last for years and years if kept clean and dry. Trend has a cleaning block that is just a plastic (not rubber) eraser like they sell at drafting and art stores. My larger 300/1000 Trend stone is about 11 years old now and still going strong.
Hi, is the bur(r), not sure how to spell it, a sign that I have sharpened my chisel enough? I can't quit get to the razor sharp blade. Maybe I'm just not patient enough.
You need to strop the edge like he does in the video on the 2x4. You should do this on a piece of leather instead, just put light pressure on the chisel edge moving in the same direction with constant pressure at a constant angle. Do this anywhere from 20-100 times on each side.

The color defines the grit of the compound. White is generally less coarse than black. This is the simplest explanation. The short answer is yes you can strop with any color but the cutting performance will differ.
Also is the white or green closer to your black one
It depends who makes them. Green is usually finer than white but not always.

Yes, you have to be careful though. loose sand paper will scratch you knife. If your careful it can be done though as long as you have something to strop on.

I strop them on MDF though instead of solid wood only because I always have it laying around from radio station build outs.

I've had some success on a glass nail file. Similar to sharpening on frosted glass like a car window.
