    It may have seemed odd when honeys mom cheered to know her daughter's diagnosis, but it made me remember how happy and RELIEVED I was when my son was finally diagnosed profoundly deaf. Knowledge can set us free, and with a diagnosis, you can finally know what to do about it.

    It’s a disgraceful shame that children must appear on a TV programme before medical professionals take a case seriously enough to actually do something about the problem. Years of undiagnosed misery for both the sufferers and carers. Appalling.

      @@odd_shoesWhy? They said nothing wrong. I've already said this but I'll say it again. My grandson has Autism. He tried to act like this but we didn't allow it. A child needs boundaries and discipline. It causes the child to feel safe. When a child is told where to be, when to be and what they should be doing, they are great. When you allow any child, regardless of what they are going through to run free, all you have is chaos. Children act out because nothing is set for them. So they don't feel safe. All children need structure. Without it, you have this!
      The Bible says it best, Spare the rod and you will spoil the child. You must have discipline and boundaries. The more you have, the better the child is.

It hinted towards "Oh its not autism this family is just bad at parenting" which gets people who think like that hooked and pulls a 180 showing hey it is autism and this is how you know. I could tell right away that it was more serious with honey. Other 3 kids perfectly fine, she tore up the entire bookshelf when a normal angry child would just throw 2 or 3 books, banned from school due to violence, doesn't like people but animals, etc... I'm not sure how they didn't get a diagnosis sooner.
    With Theo, nan seemed to have no problems with him, just with mum, so that's quite telling. Ignoring his school mornings so she could sleep in, and still relies on her parents to provide for her and take care of her responsibilities, that's just ridiculous. No wonder.

    • @couch_philosoph3325
      @couch_philosoph3325 7 ปีที่แล้ว +102

      jane jan but with theo the grandma could also be a problem. From what i know, grand parents spoil their children. He sees his grandparents everyday. Mum doesn't have that role. What if theo acts like this around grandma because she spoils him? Instead of helping her daughter with his meltsdowns, the grandma just sits there like "oh she needs to be firmer". Accusing your daughter doesn't help anything, if he is a little angle with you.

    I can understand to a degree how Honey’s mom felt. To finally have answers when you have just been brushed off and blamed as the problem by medical professionals and those around you for years for something that you had no control over is a huge relief. Because eventually you start to wonder if you’re crazy, but then to get the validation that you’re not crazy and that this was something that you couldn’t control is a very heady feeling.

      I was diagnosed with chronic fatigue and the relief was immense. I was being forced to do things that other people were doing when I had no energy. It was to the point that I couldn't do any homework because I passed out as soon as I got home. So when I got the diagnosis, people started taking it seriously. Of course there were people who just said, "that's a made up condition" but generally, things improved after I was diagnosed.

    I was judged by everyone as I raised my daughter. She’s one of five children and the rest were well behaved. It wasn’t until she was 18 that finally a diagnosis came. She’s on the autism spectrum, she has ADHD and OCD. I totally relate to honeys mom cheering at a diagnosis. Once a diagnosis comes then we can better help our children. And people around them tend to be more tolerant and understanding, which helps all of us feel less like failures.

      Sheila. As you had children how did you ever come across the time to ask everybody if you were being judged or not? Why didn't you spend more time with the children, research like that, being a research myself, will take around two years to get a correct Analysis-worth just in the town I live in and then you personally would've missed people out. So that's the first thing, secondly there is no such thing as ADHD, that's just an excuse, and thirdly why did it take so long to diagnose that she was on the autistic spectrum primarily and most importantly that she has OCD. Why were you so busy doing other things when you had a child with such severe mental disorders??
      And by the way that's not a judgement - that's the truth.

He's had a serious stutter as long as I've known him, so much so that it sort of takes a while to get used to ignoring it and speaking to him normally. I really am confused as to why no one caught on to something being wrong earlier.

My little baby girl was also kicked outta school and had the school threatened her with police and hospitals, it absolutely broke my heart (and hers) every single day. Her being kicked outta that school was the very best thing that could've happened, she now goes to a therapeutic day school, has ALL kinds of therapist and is doing SO so much better. I really do understand the struggle that Honeys parents had to go through, and it does get better. You just gotta keep fighting for your kiddos, and be a really good advocate for them.

    Theo seems like the most cheerful and funny little boy. I'm glad his mother got professional help. HER mother meant well but we all know how utterly judgemental mothers can sound and it's so, so overwhelming to be a mom to begin with! She was right in saying het daughter needed to be more form but the way the professionals put it, acknowledging Theo's mom's struggling and insecurity and giving her positive reinforcement, that was so much more effective than "She's lazy and nerds to do better parenting." It's easy to judge, it's not easy to change.

      It isn't in explanation. Autism and ADHD can increase the likelihood of misbehaviour, but it is up to the parent to discipline them. The parents in this video are *far* too soft, and they are the ones responsible for the bad behaviour.

    • @prterrell
      @prterrell 6 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      You can't stop an autistic child from having meltdowns with discipline. Autistic meltdowns aren't bad behavior. They result when the child is overwhelmed and the animal fight or flight instinct kicks in. They're basically panic attacks. Trying to discipline a child in the middle of a meltdown will only make it worse and further traumatize the child.

    • @VoidSixx
      @VoidSixx 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    edit for people only seeing this now: I made this comment 3 years ago and have come to realize I was, in fact, abused as a child, and that pretty obviously colored my outlook. I can't say I stand by my original comment, but for posterity, I didn't change it. Original comment below:
    there's rarely any blanket solution to child rearing, but I really believe that much of the (non-medical) behavioral stuff tends to be caused by a lack of consequences. My mom never made a threat she didn't follow through on, and I immediately learned that the boundaries are concrete. If you give in to a child's tantrums even ONCE it creates a skinner box where they're constantly pushing for the occasional payout.

    Aside from a serious diagnosis, a bad behavior on a child speaks directly to how is he/she being raised and the problems at home, and specially the parents, if it is a single mom or dad this behavior is more noticeable, I don't have children neither I want, but I was a child and I realize that sometimes people isn't fit to be a parent and telling this to mom or dad might sound hurtful but it's true. Children having children is making this behavioral problem in kids more relevant, because neither are they prepared to raise a them properly, because they're mostly childs still.

    I am glad these children got appropriate diagnoses. Re: Honey: I have seen first-hand the anxiety reaction of anger and withdrawal from new situations. My friend was like that. Now I understand. On this video they did say it was life-long diagnosis, and for sure, my friend suffered her whole life. She didn't seek help, but would get an antidepressant from the doctor. Yet that didn't address her underlying problem, just a bandaid one-size-fits-all approach.
    Also nice to see the little boy just needed more consistent rules and timeouts and better sleep with the help of white noise machine. No drugs. Bravo!

    It is a relief to get a diagnosis but honestly, the "treatment" for ADHD and autism is usually just clear discipline dressed up as therapy. I know the disorders really do exist but after 18 years with my son with ADHD I realised that the therapy was simply very well defined, coached, good parenting. Most parents can make do with 75% good parenting but if you have a child with these disorders your parenting has to be on point 100% of the time.

    I’m autistic and for ages when I was around her age (and like Theo my brother has adhd too) I struggled majorly at school. I remember one day where to get someone’s attention I pulled their hair. The teachers tho sent me to another class for the afternoon which didn’t help keep me calm at all. My behaviour throughout my childhood constantly got me into trouble at school, and so Ik what is going through Honey’s mind. My meltdowns were similar to hers. I’m now 17 just turning 18 and have obviously matured loads and know how to deal with things lots better.

    • @ashlieleavelle
      @ashlieleavelle 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Autism is neurological but not an excuse to be a brat. Yes their brains are wired differently, but you said you pulled someone's hair for attention. That is something a neurotypical child would do.....act out for attention. We can't blame all bad behavior on autism. For many kids and in many homes kids....
      1. Have a lack of boundaries and consequences
      2. Are not getting enough sleep
      3. Are on high sugar diets
      4. Are allowed to be disrespectful to parents and teachers

    • @bambiesdoomsdayblue
      @bambiesdoomsdayblue ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ashlieleavelle I was a challenging and troubled autistic child. I pulled someone’s hair because I did not know how to get on with others. It then became a meltdown. I was trying to talk to this girl and she walked off. Wouldn’t you have felt a little annoyed? Imagine how is is when your challenges and feelings are way more magnified and extremely tricky to navigate through. Imagine how you may deal with it then. Well I can tell you, not really that well. I was 8 years old. Yes a neurotypical child pulls hair too, but not in the way I did. Usually a kid will have stopped pulling hair then. I actually remember seeing another autistic child pull their sister’s hair at 10. And not only that, hair pulling is one of the many self-stimulating or self-soothing activities used by lots of individuals with autism to self-regulate. In seeking sensory stimulation or sensory soothing, there is a tendency to target sites where there are many nerve endings such as the hands, feet, mouth and scalp. When I did it, it was anger that this girl ignored me. But the autism mixed with anger does not go well. I was in a state of anxiety that whole afternoon being forced into a whole new classroom with whole new surroundings and whole new people. The worst way to handle it is force the child into a state of change. It escalates the meltdown mode. Change is incredibly overwhelming for us. I am not making excuses to be a “brat”. I am saying that just because neurotypical kids do it too doesnt mean we do it like they do. And you saying we act out for attention is actually very wrong. It is absolutely not us acting out, its the sensory overload, panic and anger all mixed up together and ready to explode from us.

    Born different YES there are few people but born naughty NO or even bad no such thing. It's a man made behavior.
    If a child is naughty means the parents spoiled them starting at their early age or the child got mental disorder that needs medical attention.
    It's easier to treat just being naughty than suffering from any kind of disorder.
    Bad behavior can be changed with proper training. A fact.

You have anxiety doing the simple things “what if I do it wrong” “what if it’s not up to standards. My anxiety is still awful with appointments but I can now handle it instead of kicking off. But as honey gets older she will learn to cope with the extreme anxiety instead of having meltdowns

    This mother is doing EVERYTHING WRONG. You don't bargain with kids. When you say "this is your last chance" it never is the last chance, and there's never a defined consequence that actually happens. Theo's mom is the perfect example of this. The kid doesn't need drugs. She wants the lazy way out - just drug him. But the difficult way, the way of consistent discipline that you see on Nanny911 will fix the problem. But the mom has to face her own issues. I don't know about Honey.

      Agreed, but it looked like the entire story wasn't exactly portrayed accurately. For instance, when she was pointing out Theo's door, how he had thrown his toys at it, there's no way. If you look at the door, (pause the vid), there are big gauges in it, he was doing more than just throwing toys. I hope the toys were red, something was dripping red on the door as well and it didn't go high up the door. How was he allowed that much time to destroy a door that badly? How was he allowed that much time to crack the window? According to her, he was only to be in a 6 minute time out. He did that much damage in 6 minutes? Entirely unsafe and dangerous for that child. I hope they keep working with her, they seemed to just scratch the surface and told her what a great mom she is, instead of laying out the truth and telling her to get her tail out of bed in the morning and quit making her mom take on her responsibilities, maybe then her Mom wouldn't be quite so critical.
