    If you take off the mounting bracket from the alternator you can get it out without taking out the fan saves a lot of time just replaced mine on the side of the road earlier today

    Very good tutorial! From start to finish (including fetching tools from the garage and skipping bad songs on my iPod), it took me roughly just over an hour to complete. Four things (one I saw in a similar video) that I would like to add: 1) Remove the single 6mm bolt (use 10mm socket with extension bar) that holds the power steering reservoir bracket onto the inner fender wheel. Using a small bungee cord to hold it out of the way provides even more room to access the alternator mounting bolts. 2) This is a perfect opportunity to inspect / replace the alternator belt while the belt is loose and easy to remove. Depending on brand and duration of warranty offered, I found prices ranging from $16~$24 locally. 3) Get some of the small bungee cords that I mentioned. They're very inexpensive, and have helped save me time and prevent busted knuckles! 4) Have a roll of electrical tape handy to re-wrap wires if the original plastic that the wires are encased in has become brittle and falling to pieces. I wish I could attach pictures to my comment here to show. :-/

    FYI if anyone still has trouble removing the alternator after taking out the fan, remove the exhaust heat shield and it should come out easier

      in addition to the other stuff or as a alternative to the fan shroud? I have had a hell of time getting the bottom guard off finally found one of those push clips was black on black near the center was hiding from me. However still not easy locating the damn small 10mm bolt

    • @jacobbender1913
      @jacobbender1913 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah just finished it wouldve been faster to just remove the damn shield with how much twisting n turning it took to get in and out haha

      @@Topfightvideos No it was definitely not easy finding that bolt and it was on their tight! I had to work through that little hole

    Thank you, especially for the trick to not have to use a tensioner pulley tool. Just used a 14mm wrench and a pipe.

    Very helpful! I did this three times this weekend on two Honda Accord 1999 V6 Sedans. May I add a few tips - 1. Cut a piece of cardboard or corrugated sign material to cover the back of the radiator for protection. 2. Remove the 10mm bolt holding the Power Steering reservoir to give you more room to maneuver. 3. Use a 14mm box end wrench and strap it with two adjustable hose clamps to an 18" broom handle (or 5/8" metal rod or similar) to use for the belt tensioner tool. 4. When you replace the belt, wrap it around the large back pulley, and over the alternator pulley in front, and place it ready to slide UNDER the tensioner pulley. As you push back on the 14mm box end wrench to lift the tensioner with your left hand, then use a long screwdriver in your right hand to push on and slide the belt in place. No fingers in jeopardy, and piece of cake - no ridge to overcome if trying to get onto the alternator pulley. 5. When removing/replacing the 14mm bottom bolt on the alternator bottom mounting bolt, use a 14mm ratcheting box end wrench and take short strokes to work it out (a socket won't fit with the tensioner in the way!). The third time I removed the alternator, I had it out in 15 minutes. Yes, you can access the 10mm bolt on the bottom of the condenser fan through the square opening in the lower plastic shield using a SMALL 10mm box end wrench.

    FYI: The belt-tensioner bolt is 15mm. I have a 2002, so maybe it’s different …?
    Also a couple more problematic issues:
    1). When attempting to loosen the positive cable 10mm NuT at the base of the alternator, the other nut inside of the black plastic shroud would also spin, thus not allowing me to loosen & detach the 1st nut. I had to cut a 4in. piece of hacksaw blade and tediously saw off the small circular section of plastic shroud in order to get a second 13mm box wrench onto the interior nut in order to then loosen the 10mm nut.
    2). On my 2002 the placement of the high-pressure ac hose prevented me from lifting the alternator up and out. Here I had to spin the alternator so that the tag/label was facing up, and fidgeting to get the exact angle, wiggle the alternator out between the exhaust’s heat shield and the ac pipe.
    3). I also removed the radiator and the power steering fluid cup to have more room to work.
    What an ordeal that took much time & multiple tries ! ! 😫

    This video helped me to the tee to remove and replace my alternator. I found out while removing the alternator that my stay bracket was broken, so now I'm in the process of getting one. Also, I wanted to point out that I use the serpentine belt tool Powerbuilt kit #648629 from Advance Auto Parts (also #52 in the rental tool book). I used the #14 crowfoot wrench and it worked fine for me. Thank you for this awesome and detailed video. Two thumbs up (Y) (Y)
    In case someone else has that alternator stay bracket broken, it is part #31113-P8E-A00 for 2000 Honda Accord V6 coupe (don't know other years). I found online it is the same part for 00 01 02 03 & 04 Honda Odyssey. Just my 2 cents.

  • @samsaldana2975
    @samsaldana2975 ปีที่แล้ว

    Good video. Thanks for the help. Only I’d say is that instead of removing the fan you can remove the power steering container with removing one screw to make room to pull out alternator might have to remove a hose off the power steering just be careful to keep hose up to not spill. 👍

  • @deecee508
    @deecee508 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    No need to remove fan. Power steering reservoir has one bolt holding it down. Remove one bolt and lift up and push upside down by AC line. Be careful as power steering reservoir will leak a little when upside down. Alternator is a tight fit, but it will squeeze out.

  • @Bonbonbon739
    @Bonbonbon739 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I had to do this job before I had to go to work at 2:30one day, and yeah it’s almost impossible to get the alternator out without taking something else out. I opted to take the bolts off the power steering reservoir and I still had trouble getting it out but I did finally get it out after twisting and turning for 30 minutes. Also you have to use a wrench like he said for the tensioner pulley, which was hard but I went inside and got a vacuum pipe to give me more leverage to put the belt back on

  • @carlboeshore9687
    @carlboeshore9687 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks, very helpful, the tip about removing the power steering was very useful (and I was thinking about before watching). I have a 98 and (at least on mine) there was no plastic cover on the bottom to access the holding bolt for the fan also the cover with the plastic securing screws is not on mine either. I’d recommend breaking the bolt loose on the bracket before removing the alternator.

    Important detail: DO NOT just remove any terminal cable, it'd be better to remove both and starting with Negative for it is connected to the body of the car. Then Positive should be removed, it's recommended to charge your battery before installing an alternator.
    PS. When reconnecting battery, Positive first, then negative :).
