Sailing Back To The Islands - Ep. 139 RAN Sailing

  • The island life is calling us so we sail from Vancouver, Canada, to the Gulf Islands, an archipelago next to Vancouver Island. On our way to Wallace Island Chopper 9 makes a fly by and we spend two days on the quiet little island.
We are a Swedish couple who wanted a different kind of life. So we moved aboard our sailboat RAN, a custom built Beason 40 in aluminium, untied the lines in the middle of the Swedish winter, January 2016, and started sailing south along the coast of Europe. There is no set route and we will go where the wind and our minds take us.

RAN Sailing! The best sailing Vlog on TH-cam! I feel so refreshed each week after watching. I must say that I get more envious every week. My father in law is 87 years old and has told me that he is giving us his 42' Motor Sailboat. At first I thought we would just sell the boat but each week I start thinking about taking sailing classes at the local yacht club. I have RAN to thank for my quandary. I love the fact that your videos are pure sailing and sailing life. No crazy booze parties, foul language, nearly naked people to boost subscriptions. Just sailing. Thank you Mailin & Johan. BTW, the helicopter video was epic!

Having spent my life in and around the gulf islands (my parents have a cottage on Wise just south of Wallace) I have long loved the Arbutus trees. They flower every other year and since I am lucky enough to have some in our yard I get treated to their lovely smell at dawn and dusk.
The ship you showed carrying logs at 19:37 reminded me of the tipping barges they use to build log booms. They get a barge full of logs, build a ring of chained together logs beside it and then flood half of it until it tips over and the deck full of logs slip into the boom.

Those trees with the peeling bark are very special. They are the yew tree and provided a very effective medicine against breast cancer. They are common around vancouver island and the south coast of BC.

I usually lookup your locations on Google Earth. It helps me keep my perspective on where you are (instead of just an island or River or town or glacier name). Also, I Google some of the things you see such as the Arbutus trees. That evergreen tree is found from Mexico to Vancouver. The largest one in the Vancouver area is 9-feet (274 cm) in diameter.

Oh my, S/V RAN. There was soooo much in this amazingly wonderful vlog that I have forgotten the points I wanted to share with you at the first 10-min.
    -
Loved the serenity that you both share and the local is soooo beautiful and somewhat desolate and significant at the same time. Happy you were able to set sail at the end of this episode as RAn looks soooo beautiful underway.
    .
I remember !! One of the comments I wanted to make early on was how lovely RAN looked while under power (I know, I know) when viewed from the helicopter. :-)
    😊👍👌🤘⛵️⚓️✨🥂✨

Here in Oregon the arbutus tree is more commonly known as "Pacific Madrone" (Arbutus menzeisii). It's very common where I live, and is considered a nuisance, or "weed" tree by loggers.

In the San Juan Islands we just call it "Madrona". It's both common, but also a bit of a novelty. Because they're rampant throughout the Islands themselves, but almost unseen on the mainland side just a handful of miles away. Literally almost the only exception, is specifically the Chuckanut Drive area right on the water South of Bellingham, around the Whatcom/Skagit County line.

There's a distillery in the San Juan's that makes a Madrone Brandy that is quite good. One of my favorite trees as it always reminds me of home.

@@boatrat Did you guys get the disease a few years ago that was killing off a huge number of the Arbutus/Madrone. I'm about half way up Vancouver Island and where I am we are down to about 1/3.
