I think with a motor on your back - your psychology is totally different. I am currently building my own FES (can't afford an FES glider) for the same reason.
If stressing out would help, I would do it. - is what I [try to] tell myself in those situations. We have a lot more civilisation where I fly. People waving at me on short final to a field is not uncommon! Watching your videos always makes me hold my breath a bit! What would a retrieve have looked like if you'd landed out at the point you got low?
Your average climb speed of 7.9 and 7.0 knots on the first two legs of the triangle is impressive. If you returned the way you came, your XC speed would have been insane.
Were you running the motor when you crossed the Lake Tahoe Basin? Would you have been okay if the motor had stopped? How much hassle is it to land at Minden? I don't fly in CA, so there is no criticism implied by these questions. I know that good landouts in the Tahoe Basin are non-existent, and I know about the water landings that have happened, so I felt a little twinge when you crossed into the basin.
Paraglider pilot here but enjoying looking at sailplane videos. What is the knob you move with your left hand, and what does it do? For example, at the 40-second mark.

1:52 that's insane. I wish i could experience that. Our old altimeters would probably explode 😂

Thanks! Love your videos. A retrieve out there is probably just a really long night, possibly spending a night in the glider.
Another super cool video. Thanks man!

Gotta keep it spicy 😉

Yeah it's not to be taken lightly. If you get trapped there, the options are water or a golf course. In this case, I had safe glide to Carson City.
Looked like a convergence that you escaped with from down low in. Thus the wind must have been doing something down low?
I didn’t notice much deviation from the west wind but could have easily missed that
As long as u had a bailout when u deployed the motor. It's when you're in a bad spot that its going to not work.
What I think is that you should be on track to become an instructor and if you’re not… well, how can I change your mind?

Those are the flaps. Changes the shape of the wing to allow me to slow down in thermals and speed up in straight flight more efficiently.
@@8OrangePants, got it, thank you!
How fast is a JS3? Much faster than what I fly. What a pocket rocket!
Crazy how we can go faster than sports cars allowed to go and we don't even have an engine 😂
skip the clickbait. otherwise nice vid as always.
I'm glad you realize that being low doesn't have to be a safety risk, and the title is silly. I hope many of my friends learn the same lesson.
piss poor rudder co-ordination....
Hope you start having a better day.
