@@Sirvalorsax On tenor I can only go up to altissimo F. I play on a jumbo Java t75 with 2,5 reeds. Should I move to a harder Reed to extend my range or just more practice ?
The T75 is pretty open so I wouldn't recommend using harder reeds. It might work but why work harder when it can be done more efficiently? Since you can hit the "F" now, I would recommend switching to a "lip out" embouchure. The idea of the lip out is to alleviate the pressure you are applying to the mouthpiece to allow the reed to continue to oscillate. Think more "air speed' (subtone in the upper register) and less embouchure pressure (biting). It takes a while to develop the muscles for a lip out so give it some time. Also, you will find it a lot easier to get a bigger sound on a much smaller facing. I don't/can't play anything larger than a 0.105 7*. Good Luck!
Cool. Interesting to hear your opinions. I have gone through a bunch of ligs too for a given mpc to find a good match, has to provide the right amount of resistance and I find the fit to be a big factor. Also, can’t be too fussy haha! (And finding a decent fitting cap important too)
Thank you for posting this. I just made fun of this lig about an hour before watching this!I then sat down at my computer and saw you put up this video and I played it while browsing another page so I was just listening really, not watching.....Then when you started playing with the Cryo my ears immediately perked up and I came back to watch. It sounded great to me. Crisp and focused.I wish you would have ordered the cheaper "silver" Model also that is only $150 for a comparison as its hard to believe there is a difference, but what do I know. Also if you would state at the beginning if you paid for the items or if the company sent them to you (biased).I appreciate your videos and enjoy them a lot. Keep it up sir!
Good point. I do have another Silverstein Ligature that I bought that is around 140$ for my hard rubber mouthpieces. I am not endorsed by any of the companies whose product I review. I'll try to remember to state that and thanks!!
Sirvalorsax . I build my own ligatures now. Using 100 percent copper sheet. And it creates a broader tonal spectrum for my saxophone. If You dont mind i can send one of soprano to You.
After watching your video, I bought a Silverstein lig. It's fantastic, I'm really pleased with it. I never would have spent £115 on a lig if I hadn't watched your vid, so thanks
for years I used a Selmer metal mouthpiece lig on my tenor link. I saw pictures of pro sax players with that set-up. I also used a Rov. Eddie Daniels model for a short time, but it had a funny little buzz that I'm only a heard. A Harrison H lig & of course the Link lig. Different ligs seem to affect the response of the altissimo and low note response. Of course I now play a D'Addario Select Jazz DM7 with a Rovner with the slits - kind of an updated version of the old shoe string lig but more noodle than spaghetti you know!
Silverstein sounds a lot brighter than the others but it may be only me. I have a cryo for my alto and a non cryo for my tenor and I honestly can’t say the cryo justifies the price gap. Thanks for the review 👍🏼
$200 is very steep and not for everyone. I don't know if I have a hard rubber mouthpiece good enough to justify buying another one though but I am more and more impressed by this ligature the more I use it.
I also purchased a $200 tube of cork grease, and wow!!! : every time I slide that mouthpiece onto the neck is like a hot date, it's like buttah. It has also greatly improved my sound since the chemical composition of the grease seems to better conduct the vibrations from the mouthpiece more directly onto the metal of the neck. I also have a bridge for sale, along with a horse with all his teeth, if anybody is interested.
I pair my cryo Silverstein ligature with a selmer soloist D and it has really helped me focus my sound. It is very pricey but I do recommended buying the ligature if you want to improve as a player. It took time “breaking” in the ligature but as soon as I did I felt an improvement in sound, articulation, and even flexibility.
After years of the mouthpiece/lig/reed conundrum, I've ended up with a Dave Guardala King, a standard Selmer Jazz lig and either Plasticovers or ZZ reeds. And a 'dirty' tenor combination it is too ;)
I just noticed that you have the Silverstein ligature on backwards - at least compared to how it is shown in the instruction sheet. You have the three strings in front and two strings in back - it's supposed be two strings in front and three in back.
thanks for an honest review. I have been curious about these. A lot of people seem to like them. I like to use legere reeds, and one of the online clarinet teachers says that they should be clamped higher up than cane, and clamped tighter. My van doren optimum, which i have always been satisfied with, bottoms out and can’t clamp that high. It’s hard to know what ligatures might be adjustable enough. The silverstein caught my eye, but...$200! But I’d have to say, I did hear a real difference in your sound when you tried the Silverstein. I wasn’t expecting that.
A 'Barnet Fair ' is Cockney Rhyming Slang for 'Hair' (fair -hair--then clipped to just barnet ) and you sport an amazing Barnet Fella!! And a great channel filled with common sense unlike some of the retail nonsense fuelled by sales. Appreciate.x
Just ordered a Silverstein Cryo 4 because I’m tired of throwing good money after bad on ligs. Thank you for your honest review of ligs. I swore that I'd never pay more than $20 for a lig, but the sound and tone of the Silvertein was real...even to these middle-aged ears. Yep, Silverstein...take my money. I will report back my results on this vid in a little while. My rig is a Selmer Reference 54 from 2004 with a Vandoren V16 T7 and 2.5 Traditional reeds. I like the dark sound, but I need to brighten up a little because the Ref 54 is dark-dark. Hah, love it though!
You should check out the Versa X on a Link. I messed with an Olegature and Silverstein for a while but eventually went back to the original Link lig, which has a certain fatness/depth/smoothness that you lose with the focus/brightness of those others. But then I tried out a Versa X and haven't gone back, it projects and speaks better but doesn't lose any of that lower end presence in the sound the Link lig has.
I use a standard ligature on my Meyer HR alto piece. On tenor, I either use a Berg Larsen metal with the standard ligature, or an Otto Link metal with a Selmer metal ligature, because I don't like the Link's failure to hold the reed straight. I am using a metal Link on bari, and I am stuck with the standard Link ligature (which I don't like).
I check out your videos a lot. This one popped up on my TH-cam today. Do you work and film these in cruise ships? The areas you play in and then your room with the ligatures look like a ship. Am I right? Amazing playing as usual by the way!
Hi Adrien-I´m checking out a Ligaphone gold plated Universal ligature that fits alto, tenor and clarinet. It is good. I have heard the Silverstein played by others. But i was not impressed until you adjusted the side plates and achieved a very equal sound up and down the horn. Pricey, but...... Appreciate your efforts and integrity!
I use the Cannonball ligature in my Alto with my V16 S+. I love the way it functions with my set up. I also feel like it has a certain bit of freeness that a standard rovner doesn't. I’m looking for a new ligature for my metal otto link since I heard the standard ones don’t last too long but I don’t know which ones fit my mouthpiece since I’m buying them online. Got any tips?
I have an Otto link STM Alto mouthpiece that came with no ligature. Can I use a van doren lig on the Otto link Mpc as a replacement? What other good ligs will work on the STM?
On my alto I have a Dukoff Miami d5. What would be a good ligature to brighten up the sound. It is alto pretty slim. If you have any ideas, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you. Thank you for the video.
I am not familiar with any recent Dukoff mouthpieces but many people are concerned with price when it comes to ligatures. My advice would be to find something that allows you to change the plates so you can shape the sound however you want. If money is no object, I would suggest trying the Silverstein. I already have another on order for my hard rubber mouthpieces.
Hi Ricky, Silverstein makes the Hexa that might be the ticket for the sound you are looking for. Check out on their site or phone them for advice. I have one myself and it's very adjustable. Once it's set up that's it.
You have to go to their website and find the listing for your mouthpieces. Choose yours and they will list one for you. I heard their costumer service is really good if you have any issues

My favorite was the silverstein with this mouthpiece. I demo it in the video near the end of the playing portion. All the ligatures that I received with the New TAM's worked well though
Damn this is pretty cool and funny. On the HR mouthpiece just the standard lig is right on. Good balance, tone and control too it seems. On the metal link that lig is super clear and focused. Also the fact that you can push it... it seemed limitless. It sounded like the perfect amount of light resistance. What facings were the pieces, what reed brand and strength? Great stuff brother. You got a new sub my man✌🎶💛
Great sound overall. I still prefer a hard rubber sound to the metal. But that Silverstein sounded very nice. Not $200 dollar nice, but nice. Lol I'll stick with my Borgani Flexitone ligs for now. Good video!
I wonder what kind of ligatures Parker, Hodges, Carter, Rollings, Rahsaan, Mulligan, Getz, Sims and Chaloff used with their mouthpiece. They must have been designed, researched&developed and manufactured by an advanced team of PHd's in MusicoAcousticSonicology. I mean, let's face it: They all sounded pretty neafty. bro I don't get why people use the leather ligatures. The goal is things vibrating, not dampening right? I notice they sometimes make picky mouthpieces play better because it crushes and smoothers the reed to the mouthpiece.
Man you would sound good with a rubber band. Thanks for this review, I heard exactly what I needed. I did prefer the BG sound, the Silverstien was a bit bright for my taste... but could see that being great on the band stand. Holy Range Saxman, Rascher would be proud.
Yes but... Modern mouthpiece makers can do wonderful things with hard rubber nowadays. The distinction between hard rubber and metal has changed a lot in the last few years.
I liked your sound with your mouthpiece and your ligature the best. Super clean and emotional. The Silverstein is nice to but to my ears the sound spread and maybe not as impactful as you reg ligature.
Depends on (1) what music you're playing, (2) what horn you have, (3) what reed you use. There is a definite and audible difference between different ligatures, especially when it comes to intonation and tone sustain.
I'm yet to discover a difference in the sound by use of different ligatures. For me it's all in the mouthpiece characteristics, placement of the reed and positioning of the ligature (pressure point) plus skills of the player, and that's where I admire your playing Sirvalorsax. You might as well use cable ties or shoe laces as long as it's tight enough and in the right place. The match of the ligature with mouthpiece and the functional aspect (like single vs two screws) is all that's important. I'm very much on board with Jay Metcalf's review of ligatures th-cam.com/video/iAqL1nVQfFs/w-d-xo.html where he also talks about the SIlverstein Works Cryo 4 and how it stretched over a year where it's beyond level of possible adjustment - as it's effectively made of a piece of string which stretches when used.
One thing to keep in mind is that ligatures respond differently to a wide selection of mouthpieces. I noticed that the Silversteinworks in particular responded really well on some pieces and not so much on others.
Your intonation was worst with the cheapest ligature. Silverstein ligature delivers on the money for sure, it seems it seals really well. But it is fiddly and it takes time to adjust it.
The Silverstein was my favorite. I wish it came with a better way of storing it when not in use. I still have the case it came with and it takes up a lot of space in my case
This is glorious, I been tryin to find out about "la liga betting tips 1" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you heard people talk about - Fiyrace Beyogan Formula - (should be on google have a look ) ? Ive heard some amazing things about it and my m8 got excellent success with it.

Why are ligatures so expensive?
According to the inflation calculator, $100 today in 2023, is the same as $26 in 1980.

Man you would sound good with a rubber band. Thanks for this review, I heard exactly what I needed. I did prefer the BG sound, the Silverstien was a bit bright for my taste... but could see that being great on the band stand. Holy Range Saxman, Rascher would be proud.
Thanks
Question: Do you feel a difference on sound between hard rubber and metal mouthpieces?
Yes but... Modern mouthpiece makers can do wonderful things with hard rubber nowadays. The distinction between hard rubber and metal has changed a lot in the last few years.

I agree. I can't hear a difference really.
Thank you for sharing 🎶🎶🎶🎷 I will stay with my Vandoren opt.💵 wish,Silverstein right now I don’t have that💸to justify it😂
Great emojis!!
I liked your sound with your mouthpiece and your ligature the best. Super clean and emotional. The Silverstein is nice to but to my ears the sound spread and maybe not as impactful as you reg ligature.
I still go back and forth with the two ligs depending on specific reed characteristics
I saw a guy tie his reed on with a shoestring. Not much difference in sound.
LOL!
The otto link in the van doren sounds very good to me....I play on a van doren t95 metal...thanks for the great vid.:-)
Thanks.
Just right of the bat the Theo Wanne does sound better to my ear. Its more alive. Def worth the price diff vs. the generic lig.
It makes no difference at all for the sound. Especially if you played sax less than 25 years.
I like a ligature with a screws on bottom or top of reed
the sax section sounds like 4 or 5 competing egos, not blending at all
It's all me. I could have done a much better job of mixing it or maybe I'm a little bit schizophrenic. LOL!!
Wow! That Silverstien lig is amazing ! I can hear the difference. But, I also like the Tone Master with the cheap $10 lig !
Thanks
Having lived and worked from LA for many years, it seemed many pro players were sold on the Oleg....wondering why you didn't try one on this video...
