    Just a tip, the neck band will be divided into even fourths but the neck hole of the shirt is not divided into even fourths at the shoulder seams. To find even fourths of the neck hole you must pinch center front and center back so that it is folded laying on its "side" with shoulder seams together. From here you will see that there is more length on the bodice front side and the true even fourth mark will be on the bodice front side just before the shoulder seams. If that makes any sense...

    If you purchase a "walking foot" for your machine, sewing on knits is so much easier. I also prefer to not sew one of the shoulder seams together, then when you apply the ribbing to the neckline you're sewing in a straight line vs. a circular. Very informative!

    The point of twin-needle topstitching isn't just decorative, it is a "straight" stitch that still has stretch (because of the zig-zag action of the bobbin thread connecting the twin lines), and therefore is appropriate for an area like a neckline that needs to stretch. Otherwise, single-needle straight topstitching will break when stretched. If you don't have a twin needle you really must do a zigzag stitch for the topstitch, though it doesn't look as good. It really shouldn't be very noticeable, though. Nobody ever looks that closely at another person's seams.

    • @crystalbasket

      that's what i was thinking too...that straight stitch just totally un did the whole point of having a stretchable neck

    How do I calculate the width of the neck hole in relation to the rib band?

  • @louisemaher2688
    @louisemaher2688 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I'm confused as to how you got .85 and how you added 13.175 + 1/2 and got 13 5/8. WOW

    • @AzurBaumi
      @AzurBaumi 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      .85 is an estimate to adjust the length of the neckband to the stretch of the rib fabric. If you cut the measured length,the neckband will be too loose and not sit tight. For your second point, she said she rounded up to 13 5/8.

  • @janetjackson6241
    @janetjackson6241 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    When you divide the neckline of the shirt in four, you obviously use the center front and center back, but do you use the shoulder seams or divide the distance between the centers? For instance, if using shoulder seams, the amount of stretch between the right front and right back would be different, right? Or is this the intended result so that the front neck ribbing doesn't sag? It may not matter on a slight dip but if the neckline scoops low...just thinking...

    • @ProfessorPincushion
      @ProfessorPincushion  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      mine were pretty close to equal so I just used the side seams but if you have a large scoop in the front and not in the back, I would do center front, center back and find the real mid point between those, ignoring the side seams. That way you can make sure the neck band is going on evenly. Great question! Thanks!

  • @placebiak

    but when you top-stitch that collar with straight stitch - THREADS BREAK !! :O

    • @creimom2536
      @creimom2536 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was wondering the same thing, why use a stretch stitch to install the band if we use a straight stitch to top stitch???? Is there a small zig zag stitch we should use....but it wouldn't really look very good.

  • @chaoxiong2923
    @chaoxiong2923 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Is the 85% standard across all stretch fabric types? Or do you have to play around depending on how stretchy a fabric is?

    • @ProfessorPincushion
      @ProfessorPincushion  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      85% is a good place to start but it could vary if the fabric is more stretchy or less stretchy.

    • @ProfessorPincushion
      @ProfessorPincushion  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You know, my Joann's stopped carrying ribbed knit as well. I've been ordering mine online like at fabric.com. I don't like buying fabric unseen but if you're sticking with basic colors it's not so bad.

  • @victorianguyen1031
    @victorianguyen1031 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I've tried sewing with ribbed fabric but it ended up curling or getting stuck in the machine or even just stretching in general. I don't have a walking foot or anything, but would getting one help solve this problem? Also my thread would snap when the clothes stretched.... how can i solve these problems?

    • @placebiak
      @placebiak 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Walking foot does not help you with stucking fabric in the machine, but it definitely will help with that stratching and "waving" :))And thread will not snap when you will use some stretch stitch - like zig zag or overlock stitch or stretchy tripple straight stitch. I Dont know if you have any of these but I believe you have at least that zig zag stitch on your machine.
      When you want professional finish to your projects - try use twin needle :) they make stitch that appear like two paralel lines on right side of fabric and on bottom of the fabric it looks like zig zag - stretchy :)

      The cost is far too exorbitant for the US to change every street sign, teach every American metrics, replace every tool in a home from rulers, measuring spoons to wrenches as well as for manufacturers to buy new equipment for packaging or bolts of fabric. Many Americans including myself have kindly asked for the measurements used to be written below the video so as to convert them into inches in preparation to follow along.

    • @ProfessorPincushion
      @ProfessorPincushion  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      sorry for not replying to the last question. If the neckline is large, you can use a single straight stitch as you'll probably not be stretching the neckline to get it over your head, like a scooped neck. If it's more like a regular t-shirt, you can use a straight stitch but use the double needle for a double straight stitch. It'll still look more professional than a zig zag or stretch stitch but on the back it'll have something similar to a zig zag, so will still have the stretch. We do have a tutorial on using the double needle if you've never used it before. I hope that helps! :)

      Or with an overlocker. I don't get the point of all these videos showing how to process jersey fabric with a regular sewing machine. Overlockers are totally affordable nowadays, especially when compared to the prices of modern computerized sewing machines...
