That's my old neighborhood! That's my first neighborhood! I lived there with a widow in 2004 when I was studying at Complutence.I thought it was quite ugly when I was living there for 6months, but I loved it. It had everything I needed. I used to buy stamps at the Tabacco shop, do my homework at a corner cafe by my piso, and run by the river (before there was such pretty landscaping). During the summer, they would put chairs out on the Puente de Toledo and my senora and I would drink wine on the terrace on the bridge. I had no idea where to go for tapas in that barrio, still didn't until I watched this video. Thanks so much James, it brings tears to my eyes!
Arantxa is brilliant. I love her how energy comes across. Also, what she said about eating offal/all-of- the-animal is so spot on. It's disrespectful not to eat it
It was good to see Arantxa in this video. I enjoyed attending one of her Devour Tour on-line paella cooking classes. I learned so much from her about how to make a paella but also the history of the dish as well. I must be an honorary Spaniard already since I eat tapas in the same manner as shown in this video. Plus, I don't have to look up what it means to toast with "el que no apoya, no folla". I do it without thinking now. Who wants to risk being "without"? LOL. Going to eat tapas is not just a food experience, but a social one too.
Thank you so much! I have been dreaming about tapas in Spain since I was a child and read my first Time Life cookbook. It was the first experience of food tourism writing that I read. Published in the 60s! I dove right in and made paella and learned to clean squid and lobster before I could drive. THIS IS EXACTLY THE KIND OF EXPERIENCE AND CONTENT THAT I LOVE! Thanks James and Arantxa.
Well done as always!! I would have loved to see a shot of that last plaza in the evening with the families coming out as the heat breaks. You both seemed to be handling the heat very well - it is important to stay hydrated. I loved the insights that Arantxa was able to share. This might be a good theme going forward - to spotlight the Devour tour guides and highlight the less touristy spots of the city.
You are making me hungry at 4 in the morning. Now when I get out bed, I'm going to have to prepare a big breakfast. Spain bound in Septiembre towards Madrid, Valencia, Toledo, Granada & back to Miami Florida.
I love going to the outskirts of cities to see places like these, and their Mercados of course. Love trying to melt in with the locals and las señoras. Almost 3 years since my last visit in Spain (because of you know what). Thanks for a lovely tour both of you!
In the south (at least Eastern Andalucía), tapas are individual. If you want to share, you order a ración or a media ración. We also have full lunch or dinners only with tapas (3-5 a person)
¡Arantxa me encanta! ¡Así es Madrid! Estuve allí hace cincuenta años, y ella me hace recordar como fue. Simplement andar, comer y tomar una caña era una aventura entre una gente amablísima. Ayy, ¡cuán de prisa anda la vida!
I love this! Please keep doing vlogs like these! This is like the old school Spain Revealed vlogs from years ago. Loved it and the music in the background was awesome. Your friend is so funny! My dream vaca is Spain. Hopefully next year I get my wish! 🤞🏽
Thank you James for the lovely video. I am currently in Spain and I visited Madrid and I went to your recommended places with my family and we eat like locals. I also followed the same concept in Malaga where I’m now. Muchas Graces!
Last time in Madrid we stayed just across the river near Piramides metro. Enjoyed the river park around Puente de Toledo. Now I know some more cool places.
This was a great video of some places a bit off the beaten trail. I'd definitely like to try some of them out the next time I'm exploring in Madrid. I also really enjoyed the interaction between the two of you! You could tell you were having a good time and I was smiling along with you the whole time! Hopefully this won't be the last time we see Arantxa on the channel! 🙂
Really enjoyed this video! Three main things I love about your videos: You don't just go to typical cliche places The videos aren't scripted You drink so the videos get more and more interesting as they go along! Keep the content coming!
Great stuff. It's obvious you both were enjoying yourselves on your tapas crawl. All the food looked great along with the beer and wine. Thanks for taking us along.
Did you move somewhere else in Spain? Genuinely curious because I just visited Madrid last week coming from Texas, USA. It was my first time being in Spain and I loved it !
I love this woman! She says the truth in a way that made me really re-examine the way I feel about offal....even if I need to get accustomed to the taste.
I'm enjoying all your videos. I'm from South Africa, I'm 69, I've travelled -+25 countries. I've had a disastrous stroke (now I'm fine now). I've been to Barcelona in 2020 and many times before and I've decided I'd like to live in Barcelona. I've also watched the introductory vid about moving to Spain on your "Spain Revealed" which I found extremely helpful. 😀
3:44. There are a few words that make the equivalent in English to "excuse me", "can you", "would you" to get the bartender/waiter atenttion. Here a very casual and polite way. Don't forget to SPEAK LOUD or they ignore you. *Me pones una cerveza y dos vinos? *Una cerveza y dos vinos, por favor.
Loved this video! Also found it entertaining that you could notice when all that beer & wine was getting to you all 😂 once the fist slamming the table starts, you know it's Happy hour , LoL
I and my husband just discovered your videos, we love them. You guys really do a great job showing Spain to the world. We are going to Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia in a couple of month. Can you tell me the best way to get private tours for Museum's in those cities? Wishing you success!!! All the best.
I got introduced to your channel through Mark Wiens n now I'm binge watching all your videos n is hooked on em! I love you guys, love your energy n chemistry thanks for making me live my Spanish dream vicariously through you!
Hi James, sending love to you and your wife from Australia! Just also saw your other video with Mark, but I've followed you for a while. Loving your amazing passion and great explanation when Mark was running out of words😂🙈 Thank you for sharing so much about Spain!
James y Arantxa, Me encantó el tour del barrio y lo añadé a mi lista. Espero poder gozar un “tapas tour” con Arantxa. Mientras tanto envíe una invitación a unas amigas para seguir una clase de cocinar con Arantxa. 💕💕💕
I just found out your Chanel today your mark wiens collab and I already love your Chanel I’ve never tried food from Spain and I already know it’s number 1 in the world I already love and will binch watch your Chanel
Back 15 years I lived in Madrid I remember going to Barajas twon. There was a bar behind the CAP I cant remember its name but they gave a free tapa.. Capilla bar...
As for the “huevos rotos” with han and a decent young red wine, they are delicious indeed, when they are good, when the ham and even the potatoes are good. Those might have been ok, but eggs were definitely fried too long. Then the quality of ham is an important element. I would recommend “Taberna Lalanda” near metro Colombia. They also serve an outstanding cheese (from Segovia I believe) and have decent wines.
I live near there - great neighbourhood for all these bars and restaurants. Have you guys done a video on Mercado Tirso de Molina near Puerta del Angel?
Going to Barcelona, Madrid and Granada soon. Getting lots of tips from your videos. Please ask Yoli where to shop for inexpensive espadrilles, shoes m, sandals and leather handbags made in Spain. Maybe you should do a video on best places to shop for Spanish made goods. Do you do tours to Montserrat? Thanks!
In Madrid, for espadrilles (or alpargatas as we call them) in calle Toledo, not far from Plaza Mayor, there are 2 very well known shops: Casa Herranz and Lobo.
I'm with Arantxa in regards to cold Red Wine on a hot day. Don't forget that the idea of drinking a Red Wine at room temperature probably came from the French drinking wine in their Chateau in the middle of winter so room temperature would have been pretty cold!
I saw you James with Mark Wiens. I never thought I was going to see you together . That was a great video and you make him eat so many tapas and then the cocido madrileño. Wow!!! I thought I was watching a food challenge. The only “spicy” thing he had was the “patatas bravas” (Not really for him) Anyways today was an unusual tapas neighborhood. I learned a lot. Next time I go to Madrid will go there. Me encanto el chiste/comentario del que no apoya no ….. Saludos desde Los Ángeles, California
Brilliant 🎥 As usual James 🤗👍! Can't wait 2 visit my hometown & get stuffed with entresijos Tip. I do wine & beer at the same time. It goes brilliant with tapas 😋! Losta ❤️
This is great content and the written details of your visits, venues, prices in the 'show more' dropdown is really useful and very helpful. Thanks for all your hard work. ps - what was the music at 11 minutes

I remember the first time I had torreznos 20 years ago. Crispy nuggets of fried pork belly with a cold beer. It was transcendent.

That mix you guys did at Bar Hidalgo, I'd refer to as "Spanish Poutine." Looked good, but Young would just eat all the Jamon off the top. 😀

Our local bar in El Carmen (just outside the centre of Madrid) allows you to choose your tapa. The place is always packed.
