After 35 hours in this game, I will just say.. get this piece of art. It is really amazing game and definitely a breath of fresh air. Also not many people mentioned this but the soundtrack is absolutely stellar, I hope it will get recognized. There' s nothing like driving fro your life through literally collapsing reality in your piece of shit car while 80' s and 90' s rock/synth is blasting through your radio.
There are 15 songs. Most of them made by bands, not just ambient sounds. In a game for less than 30 bucks.
Dumbo.
@@user-ef5ug6jx5n Way more than that, bro. Not to mention, it was all made for the game, and fits perfectly with the era. A lot of it could have been popular music of the time. I find myself humming a fair few of them. It's actually quite an achievement.
Yeah but like.. how do you open the exit roads..
@@stantheman2756 I mean, the game explains that? You need to fill the device on your passenger seat with arc energy by collecting those yellow/orange/pink balls from anchors, they are on every map, marked on your map. Once you have enough, you can open the exit through your map. You also have to be a certain distance from the exit point for you to be able to activate it. Once activated, drive to the huge yellow pillar.
@@Scarecr0wn game is way too hard. And you lose everything if the storm kills you??? Bruh. I’m guessing if you activate more anchors then the storm closes slower?
The entire premise here just sucks me right in, absolutely love this sort of thing. Would like a series of novels to read in this sort of style tbh
Check out Roadside Picnic by Arkady Strugatsky.
@@Zakx718 legend, thank you mate
@@Zakx718 Was just going to say. Great book.
Check out "Tales from the loop" - im pretty sure this game is heavily inspired by it
Same here man! Also Nice one for the book recommendations guys. Ill look into them as well
everybody mention Stalker -but it is just an acting protagonist in the great sci-fi Strugatsky novel "Roadside Picnic". Later Stalker was built into its game and universe but original book is so good
it certainly feels more Roadside Picnic than Stalker, but you can see a handful of influences from the STALKER games too.
I thinks it's important to talk about these rare hidden gems, just to encourage developers and let them think in a different way .. thanks for your video ..👍
So far, I’m 15+ hours into it and I don’t believe I’m even halfway. This game is incredible!
just picked this up, blaming you because knowing it's not super short was the straw that won me over lol
Does it have loot ?
Same, just about to enter mid-zone and I still want to do some runs on the outer zones firest.
the ending comes at you like a train. i only had half the blueprints and thought i was ages away from finishing the main story and BAM it ended.
@@crea0k I was assuming that was the case, since the time to finish seems to range from 15 hours to 50.
I Can't believe this game is just barely outperforming Suicide Squad, definitely needs way more recognition
Considering the game is more of a niche title from an indie team made up of around 20 people, it's gotten a pretty good reception. It's been on the top sellers list of steam since it launched also.
This looks cool, but actually playing the game for more than a few hours sounds miserable. Dealing with a car that constantly breaks down is not something i have any interest in.
it really doesnt. The game is a giant missed opportunity.
Appeals to a different crowd. Game looks cool but not something I would play
@@ishimoto1597idk why people want games that mimic the most annoying parts of real life
Double-A games are the best games. The budgets aren't so high that devs aren't willing to take a chance on more niche ideas. And at the same time it still has enuff of a budget to look like a polished product.
Its phenomenal! And the deeper you get into the zone and your car, the better it gets. Absolute delight.
It's WILD how really good this game is! genuinely beautiful at times too
I really liked this game. I think there are alot of unique features. Two things I don't see many people mention when talking about it is the quirk system and the diagnostics used with it which I think is so neat. The other is the soundtrack and song selection on the radio, both are amazing imo alot of tracks from small artists with a unique vibe
This game is incredible. It’s frustrating at times and everything in the world is designed to kill you, but it can be a blast upgrading the car and putting those upgrades to use.
@@user-ef5ug6jx5n Then you aren't very far into the game. Because you're proven wrong on the third or fourth excursion.
Very enjoyable for the most part, though I think it peaks in the middle, like a lot of survival/craft/resource gathering games. Once you get to the endgame with little left to craft and explore, it's kinda surpising how middling the actual gameplay is. The resource/crafting power creep really does most of the heavy lifting. I'm not specifically saying the game needed some form of combat, but perhaps it needed something a bit more interactive beyond driving , looting, and avoiding things.
Yep, i was really disappointed by the central zone, it feels unfinished. You find explosives, flying blood and other stuff that has 0 use in the game since by that point cutters are useless.
You can tell that as early game bloated end zones became useless. I just wish there was one "final" challenge to use all your gear on, instead you just collect stuff to collect with no clear goal in mind.
thanks for indie/AA for releasing mix genres titles that kept the gaming palette refreshing in times of how saturated/derivative the genre is
Good timing, just heard this was going under the radar
Thanks for the video. Has National Lampoon's Vacation vibes to it. Onward to 300k. All glory to the algorithm.
I have never felt addicted to a video game until I played this a few days ago and I also have never lost track of time by multiple hours. There something about the loop of making the car /garage stronger that is so satisfying. I hope this game gets the recognition is deserves
Another note here for anyone with a PS5, or a Dualsense controller, this game is entirely functional with basically every haptic option for dualsense.
When your car gets messed up the gas will buck, when you're going fast the brake locks up, the whole experience of driving a beater 80s wagon thats falling apart is beautifully translated into the dualsense haptic system. Something that I don't see enough people talking about in reviews.
really loving this so far. more games should feature upgradable vehicles to become attached to
Yes! Finally this game getting the big channel reviews it deserves!
Woah. This kind of survival game usually isn't my thing, but Pacific Drive looks so intriguing that I have to try it out!
This game is so unique, it is crushed under by its own strangeness. We need more game of this kind trying new ways for gaming. Great game, but it will be remembered as one the most underrated amazing games.
Giving me big half-life 2 driving mission vibes, loving it so far.
First time an indie has ever caught my eye over 20 hours in and just got to the second zone
I love it when developers try new and unusual stories and mechanics. I might have to try this one.
For the algorithm!
Same.
For the Emperor!
I have 40 hours nearly into the game and its what I wished Cyberpunk 2077 had regarding car customization.
I hope the game gets future content updates because I'm not even at endgame yet and the game is basically easy mode once you get even a few upgrades done.
I'd really recommend people go into this game blind like I did because my 2 friends who also bought this game both looked up guides to min/max and haven't even put 10 hours into it before quitting.
I love Pacific Drive so much. So much personality.
Looks amazing! Thank you. It definitely needs more exposure.
This game told me "We encourage exploration".. then i found myself on the roof with my car because apparently there is cliffs when you "Explore". this game is amazing!
Really glad you reviewed Pacific Drive. It's totally NOT in your wheelhouse (pun intended). Appreciate your take! I'm loving this game and taking my sweet time with it.
I love STALKER adjacent stuff, so really i should take this drive.
It's such a great game, and I can't wait to see where they take it. I was really intrigued how they pulled off the silent protagonist, it was a neat idea and better than, "Gordon, your a man of few words" ahaha. Thanks again for the great content! Hope all is well!
Great game and reminds me of something i might see on the horror streaming service SHUDDER as a movie. Been seeing quite a few of these art school film style games coming out lately such as KILLER FREQUENCY, THE CLASS ROOMS inspired by the whole BACK ROOMS horror genre i believe started here on TH-cam. BACK ROOMS DOORS, LETHAL COMPANY etc etc. Oh yea there are also the Siren Head games but i have yet to find a good one which brings the creepy feeling of the TH-cam series. Now all i need is something based on THE GREYLOCK FILES and THE LONGEST VIEW and i shall know gaming bliss ha ha. Oh and CONTROL also has this surreal bizzare style to it too. Love the strange otherworldly quality of it and mesmerizing music.
Thanks Mortismal Gaming for the great expose of this most excellent game and happy gaming! ☕🍕
Hell yea! Super glad you posted about this game! I live in the Pacific northwest and I love it!
Also, I wonder if anyone here watched the show Eureka? It was also based on science gone crazy in a fake town in Oregon.
I love the intro to every one of your videos
I love the game. It's very moody and the weather is phenomenal.
SUCH a great game...Subnautica meets Stalker.
Music is amazing too.
I think this is up my alley but I'm concerned about the saving system like if you try to save the game can you even do that and then come back and you're at the spot you saved at?
Nope, you can only save in a garage, and I believe it auto saves once you leave a mission, but you can’t save in the middle of a mission. Doesn’t even do an exit save that automatically deletes once you start back up, like Returnal added. I wish I had known about this beforehand, but I was purposely trying to avoid learning anything about the game before I got it. Oops!
Great first look. Can't wait for the devs to add multiplayer!
I kid, I kid.
Just heard about this one the other day. Thanks for sharing.
Loved the game but the one option I would have killed to have in difficulty would be a durability/degradation slider.
The default settings are INSANE for this. You'll go 30 seconds sometimes between repairs. Everything breaks too easily. Each part has its own timer for being unrepairable as well.
That said, I still loved and finished it despite this, a great narrative and a very rewarding upgrade tree.
This game kinda reminds me of Jalopy mixed with the Stalker events. Looks incredibly interesting.
Amazing game and great music
This looks really interesting!
This game looks really interesting, thanks
genuinely the vest game ive ever played. rlly hope they add more story now that they have some sort of budget cause the current ending was kinda just sad and felt rushed
There are saves midrun. The game autosaves when traveling between zones. It's not optimal, but it is tolerable.
It looks like a good game IMO.
After playing the demo, my impressions are very positive.
Such a cool game
Im looking forward to playing this. Im waiting for the rhe physical copy to come out. I don't like digital.
They you might get dissapointed because they wont do a Physical copy for PC. But they Wil lbring out a Deluxe Edition for PS5 ! So yeah wont be long.
It's a great game, with the atmosphere, the music, the sounds of the rain on the car or the wind blowing in the storm
@@user-ef5ug6jx5n I meant the ambient one from the zone, not necessarily the one from the radio
@@user-ef5ug6jx5n This argument of yours is getting pretty stale. Especially considering it isn't even accurate. The music is incredibly well implemented.
Good show sir
i love this game i would of been playing it more but i was vigorously tryna finish ff7 remake before rebirth dropped today ..really fun though
It's a very strange game but I've been having fun with it.
👌
I tried the demo and thought it had potential but felt a bit boring, I will probably get it at some point.
If I may, Children of the Sun was a super good game from next fest if you want a cool puzzle twist!
Gronk!
I'm close to 30 hours in. Overall it's a very cool game with some great ideas, let down by its proc gen -- Because ultimately it's not really a game about exploration. It's about going on scavenging runs and managing a bit of RNG. Once you've seen an anomaly or a type of building, that's pretty much all there is to them. Go out, grab a bunch of mats, try to avoid the anomalies, rinse and repeat as you upgrade stuff and push through the story. Gameplay-wise... I'm not saying it needs combat, but the lack of it puts an emphasis on the driving and gathering, and that's starting to wear a bit thin for me. I'd love to a sequel (or another game influenced by this one) with a fully open world and an emphasis on exploration and discovery vs. just survival and gathering junk.
❤
Moooorrrtiiiismall
The mood of the game is great, the survival grind is pleasant, i also dont mind the "saving controversy" too much. Would be a solid 8, maybe 9/10, if not for THE. MOST. clunky controls i have seen, at least in the present decade so far
1st person DREDGE with car, stable but buggy, inheretly unbalanced yet somehow fun and atmospheric
At the part to make a Lim Shield and i put 25 hours into it already. Great game, but now Rebirth is out :( ill come back to finish tho.
Not shure about mid mission saving, as the developers have said that this would conflict with their vision for the game. Which is actually pretty stupid considering that the difficulty options pretty much include an god mode.
If I enjoyed The Outer Wilds, will this game fill a similar niche?
I love the game so far but I really need them to add the ability to save mid drive. I've got kids. It's hard for me to set aside enough time for a run.
That’s all fine and dandy but is there a chance in hell I can pick up a date in this jalopy?
Hey Morty son !! ❤💀, Are you checking out Unicorn Overlord (comes out March 8) or are you giving it a miss? Thanks !
Didn't realise its not on PC ! 😬
The setting sounds very similar to S.T.A.L.K.E.R.
this is one review of the game. the review which solidifies i can't play it
"Unfortunately not being able to save the game makes it unplayable without consistent free time. Since my work and kid dictate when I am free, losing an hours progress every time is not reasonable.
Once I noticed the issue, and read that the devs stated it's a technical limitation they won't be revisiting, I had to refund. While I hope this changes so I could revisit, it sounds like it's a done deal.
If you have consistent free time, it was a fun game and you should consider it."
yeah i have to game in a different way than others, and one necessity games must have for me are ways to pause the game and/or save progress basically at any point so i can leave the game anytime. if it doesn't have that, its basically no-go for me
I really want to try this game! I was born in 1998 so that’s an extra lol

Looks like a seizure waiting to happen. I'm good
Man it's kind of sad to see how far the game industry has fallen, you can buy this game for 25 euros or u can buy an expansion for Warhammer 3 that just adds a few units. Man props to the team behind this game, let's hope we see many more games that are as creative and fun as this.
I’ve heard the ps5 version is worse on steam deck. Sucks because it definitely looks interesting.
Not being able to save during a run is not something that will be patched. It's a feature, not a bug. It makes ZERO sense to be able to save mid-run. You SAVE when you're in the safety of your garage/shop.
At least an exit save for those of us with limited lengths of time available. I've had do abandon games with similar mechanics because of that.
I can confirm the closer you get to la the more accurate this game gets.
Very cool recommend.
I’d love to see @MortismalGaming Check Out “Tales of Maj’Eyal”
A classic that doesn’t get enough attention and fits this channel quite well.
Its a cool idea, but the poor story, lack of a proper end game and anything to find or discover really drags it down.
I still really liked it, but maybe a DLC could fix the game to have something to do past the early hours. Still worth a try i would say.
