It brings back memories of when I lived in east London many years ago. I used to eat in a café run by an Irish lady and she would always serve huge portions. One day I asked her why such big portions. She told me that a lot of her customers may be struggling economically or even homeless, she never knew when some of her customers had last eaten and she said she wanted to make sure no one left her place hungry. She was a lovely lady, always remember her.
Agreed. It is great value, did buy 2, and only eat 1. Use the recipet for the other to pass-it-on to someone who needed it. Restaurant to Foodbank promotion.❤❤❤
Yes. Britain and the EU continues to pay for refugees (admin, housing, healthcare, education, etc). It's unfair to the western nations. We need politicians to stand up to this, a brand new system.
Maggie was amazing.Endless refills of tea and and toast, and loving hospitality. Her passing was was a real loss for people living in Lewisham. What a lady!
My son is 6 years of age and his new favourite thing before bed... Can we watch Gary eating delicious food. You've got a new fan there. Thank you for creating family friendly content and always being a pleasure to watch.
So glad to see you do Maggies. My favourite memory of her was a time I was in there when a woman demanded to speak to the manager. Maggie appeared and listened politely to the customer complaining about the bad language used by one of the waitresses. After the woman had made her complaint, Maggie summoned the waitress to her side. 'Now I hear you've been using bad language and that is unacceptable. She effing hates bad language and, if I hear you effing using it in front of this lady, I'll effing sack you'.
I was one of the many who recommended Maggies, went there every week in the erly 90s, it was our sales breakfast meeting go to place (we all sold photocopiers at the time for Canon). Maggie was such a lovely woman, sorry she's passed, her "You'll be wanting another tea there lads" in her soft Irish accent I still remember to this day. Really pleased her family are still running it and the breakfasts are as good as they were 30 years ago. (As an aside, didn't they film Snatch nearby).
Any family business that's been around for over 40 years has to be doing something right. Quality review as always. Hope that everyone has a great weekend.
Maggie was a lovely eccentric Irish lady, a real character feature of the cafe. My nan would make the family eat here regularly, I was a vegetarian (and into spices) at the time which wasn't particularly their forte but the food was always good honest fare like a decent Sunday dinner cooked with love by your gran, generous portions, and cheap. It wasn't my thing, but I can see why it was popular. Good to see its still going strong years later.
I actually remember Maggie opening the Cafe many years ago. It has always been the go to place and Maggie herself looked after you like family. Very sad to hear of her loss.
@8.10. You'll have the Ancestors squirming! We eat B&S in the North too. There are variations of the same dish all over the British isles. The dish is named after the sound it makes while cooking (bubblling & squeaking) while frying slowly in the pan.
Hi Gary. That is some breakfast. It’s good to be supporting family restaurants. So glad you enjoyed it. Also a big thank you to the camera man appreciate it👍👍
Check out local diners and as we call them DIVES. As far as chain restaurants go, IHOP is one of the better. International House of Pancakes. I live just north of New Haven, home of Yale University, and I wholeheartedly recommend Bella's in the Westville section of New Haven, and The Hidden Kitchen in Branford. Excellent quality and great portions. If you do come here, (we're about 75 miles northeast of New York City) you must try New Haven pizza. THE BEST IN THE WORLD.
I think this is sincerely a case of showing generosity of spirit..they clearly want to give you a lot of good food for very little money.I'm sure they need to turn a profit, however I keep finding that people who come from a predominantly working class upbringing have natural empathy for their fellow man and even though they're not wealthy, they still have a warm and generous spirit. Looked great Gary.
The most food humanly possible, plus unlimited hot drinks, for under 12 quid. That's flipping insanely cheap. They are total heroes, who ran that place. Thanks so much for this Gary. Excellent.
Wow, that was definitely value for money. It just shows what small family run businesses like Maggie's can do. Well done them and well done you for bringing them to our attention.
That is probably the best value for money i have seen in many years.Your last two reviews have featured places that deserve a massive amount of custom (this and the Italian) they are definately at different ends of the cost factor but both a credit to their owners and staff.Great review again Gary although it did seem cold to be sitting outside
What a find! Despite the sausages being of the catering variety, everything else looked good and fresh. What really surprises me is the variation in prices, especially in and around London. After business rates, ground rent and staff costs, I honestly don’t know how Maggie’s can profitably offer such a massive breakfast at the price, it’s truly astonishing. And it surely raises the question whether many other establishments are ripping off customers by selling food at multiple times the price? I know from just doing my grocery shopping that many shops and retail establishments have used the cost of living crisis to unfairly raise prices. And your experience here proves this, in my opinion.. they are paying the same prices as everyone else for food in addition to the other costs I mentioned earlier. So bravo Maggie’s, you’re doing a great job in feeding your customers well for great prices. You deserve to succeed for another forty years and more! Another thought provoking and entertaining video, thank you. 🙏🏻
Two of everything apart from when you get 4 ha ha, what an absolute feast Gary! Brilliant value. I also like how considerate you are to other customers trying not to get them in shot where possible.
I'd say the plan is to take a carrier bag and some serviettes and a paper bag, order loads, then take the bread plus any complimentary butter and one of any of the items (for example fried egg, sausage, bacon, ham, mushrooms) to make a sandwich later. Job's a good 'un!
I'm on a weight-loss journey, Gary (3.5 stones lost so far). I can't be eating cooked breakfasts like that right now, so I am living vicariously through your videos. Keep 'em coming, buddy 😊
Richard Well done!, I am on a diet as well, and I've lost 4 stone, and I didn't give up the bacon, eggs, toms, beans, even have the odd sausage and black pudding, . It's the carbs I reduced, so little bread, , and potatoes.
I reached the age of 52 before finding out that bubble and squeak is a traditional part of a London fry up. When I visited my sister recently, she took me to a place called Crossways Cafe in Nunhead. It made me wonder why I'd never eaten it with bacon, eggs and all the trimmings before. It goes so well. I remember that my dad would always make it for tea on Monday from Sunday dinner leftovers when mum was working the evening shift. Thickly buttered doorstep bread, lashings of HP sauce- proper bloke cooking! I think its best slightly blackened on the outside. That thin layer of charcoal makes all the difference! It's great comfort food and part of happy childhood memories. It was delightful as a young boy to stand and watch over the pan and learn how the food got its name. I really like Crossways by the way. Maybe not a place to excite a gourmand's tastebuds but good, honest food well cooked. Very welcoming and friendly too, Also great value for money. It's vanishingly rare to hear a Northerner say that in our capital city!
Bubble and squeak is a perfect example of a simple dish that is so satisfying. Mum made it with some potato flour. This helped it stick together, and allowed it to be flipped so that it was browned on both sides.
@@DovidM It really is David. Mash is satisfying on its own, let alone fried the next day with some brassicas. I never thought of using potato flour as a binder and I don't know what I was going to say next. I'm sorry, I've had a bit to drink.
I am amazed! When I was in my 20’s some 30 odd years ago I was on a construction site not far from maggies and occasionally I tell the tale of this fantastic cafe in Lewisham the likes of which will never be seen again. Then I watch your channel and find it’s still there 😧 …. I’ll definitely be heading back down there this month even though is the opposite side of London for me. Thanks again
I've wanted to used his place a few times when I'm delivering in the area and I get a chance to stop. Thanks for reviewing this place Gary as it will inform my decision to try it. £11.95 for all that !!!! My local cafe is in Plumstead and it's £10 for half that much and tea and coffee is extra! Hash browns !!! 😶 Nice to see the black pudding is good and thick cut, and I love to see a fried slice with an egg on it. Eggs well cooked. That bubble looked really good! Plenty of crispyness. The beans have been cooked for a long time and that helps with the flavour. That is astonishing value for money. It's an 8 elevated to 9 for the value. I would have had the liver instead of hash browns.
Another good review and always nice that you make a point of saying when the staff are good, that's a big breakfast I think even I might struggle with that.
Hi Gary, I'm sitting here at my desk in Sydney, sipping a Cointreau, watching your latest vid. That looks good. I know that Maggie's has been around since 1983, but I hope it doesn't go the way of the US franchise Red Lobster because of the free endless tea, and two of everything breakfast. 8/10, and definitely amazing value for money. For the starving hordes, Maggie's is the best ! Rest in peace, and God bless you, Maggie ! Hope you're enjoying the 'Loaves and fishes' upstairs ! Have a good week, Gary !
What a terrific little place is Maggie's Cafe & Restaurant. Lovely staff and such fabulous value for money ! Fresh tomatoes for me by the way. The apple crumble is to die for ! A super start to your day Gary ! It's a 9.5/10 from me.
Absolutely stupendous! True that it wasn't absolute top quality gourmet foodstuffs, but that's not the job they've chosen to do. They've chosen to do solid value and generous portions for a mostly local clientele. They can't be getting rich, so more kudos to them for maintaining their own standards and doing such a wonderful job of it. Honestly - we don't need magic every meal. Sometimes - even usually - a good, solid, tasty plate is what's needed. And it looks like that's what Maggie's will give you.
How lovely in this day and age to still find a family run business still packing in the customs quantity counts good food cooked well I will give that a 8 out of 10
Gary if you ever travel to Birmingham, head to a small area called Great Barr for a breakfast at Panjabi Rasoi - as the name suggests they offer a fabulous variety of dishes, both Asian and English - the portions are huge and flavour is great! And prices cannot be knocked at all! 🙌🏼
Another great review! I was stationed In Lewisham in the 70's, I wish it had been in the late 80's! 😀 My favourite 'bubble' was always on Boxing Day with all the Brussels Sprouts incorporated 🙂
I have eaten ta Maggies since about 1990 when I worked in Lewisham and the food and staff was great and Maggie would serve you what a lovely lady and if I am passing I still popping in
That was Value for Money & HUGE!! No wonder you had to waddle off 😂 Lovely to see another family business still thriving Well done Gary & Cameraman for taking another fantastic breakfast for the Team 😄 👍🏻
It's interesting Rob. I've had a lot of comments from people in the North saying they've never tried bubble so it's great to see some do. Glad you like it!
Hello Gary: Without a doubt, the most intimidating meal of any kind that I have ever seen. You are my hero for even attempting to eat what I am sure was enough food to feed a small army. Someday, if I've starved myself for a few days beforehand, I might try a breakfast that large but for now, I'm just going to have to sit here in the USA with my jaw hitting the floor in amazement. Well done, as always.
I've always said that Lewisham has no food to offer but after seeing this, I must visit to full my stomach to the brim. It looks so goooooooooood. Thanks for showing me this gem of a place.
Tinned tomato for me all the time. Thanks Gary - I really love your channel.. I know it's been said before but I also appreciate your really honest and decent feedback. May you march forward to 1 million subscribers because you deserve it.
Gary for £11.95 good lord you can't in any way complain about that.for that about of delicious breakfast wow that was a serious amount of food for that price brilliant! Thank you for another fabulous video! Positivity peace and love ♥️
I was astonished at how cheap it was for that amount of food.wow! Thank you for the video it was great it's a wonder tho that you could move after that lot!😀 Positivity peace and love ♥️
Wow ! a lot of food on that plate. You can't beat that price. It could serve 2-3 people. As always, the videos are so well done. All the best my friend. 👍👍 Jim and Harriet
Biggest breakfast before extras I had was 3 fried eggs, scrambled eggs, 4 sausages, beans, mushrooms, fried onions, 4 hash browns, 4 bacon rashers, 2 black puds, 1 white pud, tomato, 4 slices of toast, cuppa. I ordered extra 4 sausages & rashers, then 2 extra black puds, 1 slice French toast too, was at a park near Trowbridge several yrs back
Wow Gary, for 11.95 and bottomless tea or coffee! That’s insane value, I’m deffo gonna go give that a go! I urge you try the lounge down at clacton and a bistro cafe Called “taste” £7.50 for a large breakfast including a drink of your choics
My patch. I pass it a few times a week, a friend used to rave about the place, but I've never been in... Imagine they've been doing a roaring trade over the last couple of decades though with all the construction work going on around. Your videos are great adverts for these establishments, Gary!
Hi Gary..hello from 'back of beyond' up north..😯..of course we have bubble'n'sqeak..perhaps not on a breakfast..but I've eaten many a plateful.. usually on a Monday..as you mentioned after the Sunday dinner..😋🤣
Hello Jan! Yes I more meant on a breakfast, not in general. Last couple of vids I've had a lot of people in the North say they never have it on a brekky
Saw another “takeaway” reviewer at this restaurant. Your review was much calmer and had less “eccentric locals” interrupting. The plate looked solid, esp that Fried Slice?!
Unlike that other ‘takeaway’ reviewer, Gary doesn’t need to advertise the fact with clothing advertising the channel, or drive around in a van with it plastered down the side - I often wonder how genuine a review is when the staff know it’s a reviewer - that’s what I love about Gary’s reviews!
While digging the Severn Sisters Victoria Line station 11 of us would walk into a café for breakfast, over the weeks we got fed up of bacon sausage etc. and the lady owner suggested a pork chop or steak. So steak eggs and double bubble was tried, some of my Irish mates went for more but realized the more items ordered the smaller the portions got. This was brought to the lady's attention, so the next morning two plate fulls were delivered to each of us. I tell you we could hardly stand let alone work afterwards. I think I'll be giving Maggie's a visit next time I'm in London, now if the Ulez is dropped I'll take my mate along as well.
(374) A real "gut-buster" as we say here in America. "Maggies" is going to be absolutely flooded with customers after this upload. Thanks SO much for this upload, Gary. Makes me yearn to be back in New Zealand; no black pudding to be had and the sausages are, um, "sub-par" to be kind here in America.

That is astonishing value for money. It's an 8 elevated to 9 for the value. I would have had the liver instead of hash browns.
This is one place definitely worth stopping for Andrew
Another good review and always nice that you make a point of saying when the staff are good, that's a big breakfast I think even I might struggle with that.
I always respect the staff, Johny
Hi Gary, I'm sitting here at my desk in Sydney, sipping a Cointreau, watching your latest vid. That looks good. I know that Maggie's has been around since 1983, but I hope it doesn't go the way of the US franchise Red Lobster because of the free endless tea, and two of everything breakfast. 8/10, and definitely amazing value for money. For the starving hordes, Maggie's is the best ! Rest in peace, and God bless you, Maggie ! Hope you're enjoying the 'Loaves and fishes' upstairs ! Have a good week, Gary !
Thank you very much for your lovely comment all the way from Sydney
What a terrific little place is Maggie's Cafe & Restaurant. Lovely staff and such fabulous value for money ! Fresh tomatoes for me by the way. The apple crumble is to die for ! A super start to your day Gary ! It's a 9.5/10 from me.
Thank you very much for the comment, Robert I hope you have a great Sunday
hi Gary, great video, sorry to hear about Maggie, she helped me out in 1997 when i fell ill in there, yes its a good cafe
That was very sad, Peter. She was apparently a lovely lady.
Fantastic, glad you liked this one Heidi
How lovely in this day and age to still find a family run business still packing in the customs quantity counts good food cooked well I will give that a 8 out of 10
Absolutely spot on!
That sounds very interesting thank you
@@GaryEats you’re welcome! ☺️ Hope you give it a try some time! They do lovely thurka beans! 🙌🏼
Absolutely no complaints here. What a breakfast. And what a great price 😮
I agree with you completely
Another great review! I was stationed In Lewisham in the 70's, I wish it had been in the late 80's! 😀 My favourite 'bubble' was always on Boxing Day with all the Brussels Sprouts incorporated 🙂
Thank you, I really appreciate it Andy!! Oh yes delicious
Andy, that is the best!
Other people go on about Christmas dinner, and I'm waiting for the Boxing day one!
Tin tomatoes with a little honey olive oil and seasoning.
That sounds absolutely fantastic, Carol
Looks superb value for money. Thanks for putting the place on our radar. Places like it giving great value for money deserve to prosper
At least the cameraman gets fed😂❣️❣️❣️😘🇿🇦
Finally Melany!! Lol
I have eaten ta Maggies since about 1990 when I worked in Lewisham and the food and staff was great and Maggie would serve you what a lovely lady and if I am passing I still popping in
Fantastic to hear, thank you, Chris
That was Value for Money & HUGE!! No wonder you had to waddle off 😂
Lovely to see another family business still thriving
Well done Gary & Cameraman for taking another fantastic breakfast for the Team 😄 👍🏻
That’s very kind to say thank you very much and it was a huge breakfast
Hey Gary, I’m from Geordieland and my mam used to always make bubble and squeak with the leftovers.
It's interesting Rob. I've had a lot of comments from people in the North saying they've never tried bubble so it's great to see some do. Glad you like it!
A staple in Yorkshire too, mainly home made less common in cafes.
Absolutely fabulous to watch……polite, thorough, concise and beautifully descriptive…..many thanks Gary
That’s very much appreciated John thank you
Hello Gary: Without a doubt, the most intimidating meal of any kind that I have ever seen.
Thank you very much, Paul. Two days later and I’m still full up. lol 😂
Ha! Nearly happened again with Gary "Giving it a Go..." by jogging straight into a Passer-By! Great video as always Gary. Thank you so much as always!
Thank you ever so much and yep, I'm too clumsy lol
@@GaryEats You keep doing exactly what you're doing Gary! Love your videos so don't change a thing 😃👍
I've always said that Lewisham has no food to offer but after seeing this, I must visit to full my stomach to the brim. It looks so goooooooooood. Thanks for showing me this gem of a place.
That’s a very good point. It is a little gem.
That breakfast is fantastic value. Another cracking review Gary. 😋😋
Glad you enjoyed it Paul!!
Tinned tomato for me all the time. Thanks Gary - I really love your channel.. I know it's been said before but I also appreciate your really honest and decent feedback. May you march forward to 1 million subscribers because you deserve it.
That is very kind and very much appreciated, Adam. Thank you very much.
That’s good to know Gary, I would like to have you around for a while so you can keep doing your streams all the best..
Thank you very much, Martin
Premier Inn breakfast £10.99 all you can eat and 2 kids eat free! Great treat for the kids and the one near me is really good. Never had a bad one.
I've done Premier Inn before, decent
Good reminder and I agree with you.
Premier inn I bet it's a limited on what they offer compared to this place ?
Ours does bubble n squeak as well 😁
Didn’t know this! Can anyone go or is it for premier inn hotel stayers only ?
Gary for £11.95 good lord you can't in any way complain about that.for that about of delicious breakfast wow that was a serious amount of food for that price brilliant! Thank you for another fabulous video! Positivity peace and love ♥️
Obscenely good value isn't it
I was astonished at how cheap it was for that amount of food.wow!
I have to say it was a lot of food on this occasion, Jim and Harriet, I hope you both had a wonderful weekend
Exceptional value for money breakfast and cooked to perfection.
I agree 💯👌 Richard
Biggest breakfast before extras I had was 3 fried eggs, scrambled eggs, 4 sausages, beans, mushrooms, fried onions, 4 hash browns, 4 bacon rashers, 2 black puds, 1 white pud, tomato, 4 slices of toast, cuppa.
I ordered extra 4 sausages & rashers, then 2 extra black puds, 1 slice French toast too, was at a park near Trowbridge several yrs back
That is absolutely huge lol
Oh my goodness, I’m so hungry now! Next time my son and I go to London we have to pay a visit to Maggies. Thanks Gary
Please do!
Wow Gary, for 11.95 and bottomless tea or coffee! That’s insane value, I’m deffo gonna go give that a go! I urge you try the lounge down at clacton and a bistro cafe Called “taste” £7.50 for a large breakfast including a drink of your choics
That sounds amazing value I’ll take a look at your recommendation
Thanks as always - You are very productive these days, Gary!
Thank you :)
Sometimes a treat, is having an expensive gourmet meal, yet a treat is can also a good old cheap belly buster. Glad you review them all pal 👍🏼
Thank you very much, Tony for recognising how we mix it up on the channel
Bubble is/was called bubble and squeak in Leicester. Looks like the same thing, not had it since the early ‘60s 😄. Nice review Gary 👍
Didn't know that, thank you!
It’s still called that in Stoke. Lovely food.
Yes bubble and squeak is generally what its known as In SE London , assumes bubble was just a shortening of the name.
It's the sound it makes whilst being cooked hence bubble and squeak.
Same on the Wirral and the North West generally... 😊
Now that's what I call a big breakfast - wow! Great value for money too.
I agree, it’s great value
My patch. I pass it a few times a week, a friend used to rave about the place, but I've never been in... Imagine they've been doing a roaring trade over the last couple of decades though with all the construction work going on around. Your videos are great adverts for these establishments, Gary!
I think it’s a fantastic cafe Grahame and I hope it can bring some business for them
Hi Gary..hello from 'back of beyond' up north..😯..of course we have bubble'n'sqeak..perhaps not on a breakfast..but I've eaten many a plateful.. usually on a Monday..as you mentioned after the Sunday dinner..😋🤣

Thank you and the fried slice is so bad for you lol
@@GaryEats Being here in the states, we don’t have the greatness of the fried slice. Is it just white bread buttered and then fried??
Eccentric locals. ??
You mean they were Cultural Enrichment merchants..
It is
While digging the Severn Sisters Victoria Line station 11 of us would walk into a café for breakfast, over the weeks we got fed up of bacon sausage etc. and the lady owner suggested a pork chop or steak.
That is a fantastic story to hear hopefully some lovely memories
(374) A real "gut-buster" as we say here in America. "Maggies" is going to be absolutely flooded with customers after this upload. Thanks SO much for this upload, Gary. Makes me yearn to be back in New Zealand; no black pudding to be had and the sausages are, um, "sub-par" to be kind here in America.
I cannot wait to try an American Breakfast
So good to see you again too, Gary.
Have a terrific weekend
Why wheres he been?
@@GaryEatsgood review , my kitchen flooded . 😩
What a great place and the value is unreal a proper belly buster there Gary defo worth a visit great review yet again 👍
That’s very kind and appreciated, Kevin
That was definitely a breakfast fit for a king. If that king is Henry VIII! 😆
Yep LOL!
Great value. The only problem is you do get people who will have everything just because they can, and then you throw half away which is a great waste
Yes that's a big shame, had the conversation with the staff member who said a lot goes to waste
Take it home.
Ikr? I'm wondering if it's the muk bang challenges filming for content who order it most.
@@ngatiramona Stand back, I'm a first aider. Do you need an ambulance? You're English as going wrongly bad duck, and your other face is going mightingly lopsided. I'd heat sum 🍄 on the WC.
Canadian here. THANK YOU GARY for finally explaining what a BUBBLE is. In plain English. Massive, massive appreciation from across the pond. Bubble? Finally sorted. What in God's name is a "SQUEAK?"
I’m not sure what the squeak part of it is 😂😂
1:29 Its like a ferry channel crossing with that table!
Lol!
Was a bit at sea today! 😂😂😂
That looked like an insane amount of food for £11.95, my mouth was watering the whole way through 😂
That's fantastic to hear glad you enjoyed it
Great show as always! I never thought I would have a good reason to revisit London... Now what I do!!!
Thank you Ian
Oh Gary why do you do this to me.? Another great review I can tell you I am the size of a small apartment now but by the time I have finished eating at all these wonderful places I will be the size of Longleat.
I'm so sorry Richard but have a lovely weekend lol
My family is from Lewisham/Catford. ❤
Very nice Elizabeth, have you ever been here?
@GaryEats I don't think so. My grandpop was a professor of fencing. He taught at Catford boys. My uncle also was in the English team at one point.
Going through hard time at the minute in life but ur videos shines the light gary, keep up the good work your a gentleman 🫡
I’m really sorry to hear that Ryan, if you need a chat just email me please. Take care 👌
Give me one of these local, family run businesses over the big franchises eight days a week.
I agree with you completely
