    I deleted this video by accident via the TH-cam app! Yay. It's back. Please also note this is a straight up comparison if I moved the microphone around I would get drastically different results. If you've ever recorded you know that mic placement on an amp can completely change your sound. I have also just chosen two of the SM57 IR's for this test from Celestion. Thanks for those who left comments and apologies for the reupload I can't believe it was deleted. #jetlagisreal

    In every case the real speaker and microphone just sounded so much more alive and expressive.

    I've been using an IR loader (ignite) placed after bias fx plug in in my DAW and turning the cab sim off in bias fx options , difference is worlds apart, some amazing sounding IR's out there ! what a world!!!

    As I said on the original video, if you ever want to do a similar test again in the future I think you should do it as a blind test for the viewer and stick a poll in the cards asking which we think is speaker and which is the IR. The follow up video could be very interesting depending on what the results say.

    Celestion IR’s are great. I have several Marshall’s with Greenbacks, V30’s etc and they’re not an exact match but they definitely transformed my Helix for the better.

    IRs had extra lows and highs to my ears, sounded just like modeling amps vs tube amp demos you've done before.

    The position of the mic can get very very different results so it will never be a real 1:1 comparison.
    Anyway... the IR you used was not the 57 alone it was the 121 and 57 combined. This is probably the reason why I find the Cab+Mic brighter than the IR.
    I, personally, don't think one is better than the other, they are just different, but the brighter Cab+Mic will, in my opinion, fool our ears to believe it is better.

    • @MrClassicmetal
      @MrClassicmetal 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually _knowing_ which one is the hardware will fool many into believing that it is the better sounding one.
      A true blindfolded test will show different results.

    The clean and lead stuff sounded very similar. Around the 3:15 mark where you were arpeggiating with a little dirt, the computer sounded more muffled. Higher frequencies stood out with the mic.

    Shane, If you bought the IR from Celestion it comes with at least 4 different mics.....Plus: High Gain, Lo Gain, Balanced Fat, Thin, Bright, Dark, Dark 2, Rear Mic'd variations. If you want to spend the time It will get so close no one can tell them apart. Not to mention even two of the exact same speakers sound 100% the same. Some of these comments I'm reading are simply biased opinions of people who don't know or don't want to know how far technology has come. Great Video Shane! I have 6 different Celestion IR's....they are great and a lot cheaper than buying speakers.

    I was curious about this also so I created my own impulse and then left everything exactly as it was and recorded through both the real cabinet and the impulse. 100% exactly the same. Literally imperceptible as to which was which. A great process to go through actually.

    Dude, the IR you are using is a combo of Royer 121 and SM57, and you compare that to one 57 in front of cab. Apples and oranges!

    IR's are more static, like a 'picture', while real speakers have movement like a 'video'.

      There is this, and it's time for 3d IRs. I think its my same reason for hating the Kemper, because while the tone sounds almost identical, it's completely lifeless. Almost like looking at a picture perfect wax model vs the real thing. There are some really great white papers out there on how this should work that really matched up with the ideas in my head. I highly urge you to check it out and see if the ideals match your statement.

  • @TheScottWhyte

    I know you say it sounds very similar... but to me it’s night and day ... real speaker is light years better fuller sounding,... missing low mids and bottom ... great video! Cheers

  • @drharmonica
    @drharmonica 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Listening with my headphones on I think the real speaker and mic sound a little better. A bit brighter and more airy but the difference is very subtle. If the volume in the room is a problem using the two notes would do just fine.

  • @TheBedroomRocker1
    @TheBedroomRocker1 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice comparison! I feel the IR was a bit darker and it feels like the amp is compressing more, while the speaker was brighter and seemed to be louder and have more headroom. They definitely sound different in my opinion, but the IR still sound like a micked speaker.

  • @jprosentreter
    @jprosentreter 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Another ripper of a video! I think a lot of the difference can possibly be chalked up to variance in mic position. My captor was a game changer for recording, I'll take the convenience of not having to worry about mic placement consistency, if anything should need to redone its waaaaay more efficient. Any subtle difference people MIGHT hear could also just be eq'd to match and often disappears in a mix. Cheers!

  • @kimhansen6384
    @kimhansen6384 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    The amp sounded absolutely the best, but there are so many parameters you can tweak on the Two Note, that it is not easy to know if you could have found a better
    sound match. I don´t know, I just ordered a Torpedo CAB M, and I hope I can do a better match. This one was not good enough.

    Mic and amp for win! Ir was good but still sounds not as full to me as mic and amp. Ir and load box haven't matched the interaction of mic and amp. That said Ir still sounds really good.

  • @The_Macaroon

    To be honest the sound 90% the same and both are great. The 10% you of difference is the apparently how the room you are changes the sound before hit the mic.
    But yeah both are good and the good thing is that the IRs don't sound digital like pllugins. Good job Shane

  • @PetrosGailas
    @PetrosGailas 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    The guitar lost the low mid frequencies with "Impulse Response" which giving the tone and character on the amp! For me, it's a big difference. Also its a good idea, when you comparing tracks, to put them start on the same bar/position and just use the solo button in order to understand better the difference. Thank you very much for the test/video!!!

    They sound really close. I use the Celestion ir's myself. I know you said there's no extra eq/processing on the Two Notes but, what about High and Low cuts? I find I have to use cuts with all ir's, regardless of brand.

  • @notmyname4714
    @notmyname4714 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Dude, even just from the audio picked up on your lav the differences between the two are starkly different. In the first part of the video when you went back and forth between sounds it was also profoundly different from one to the other. I really am not trying to troll you here, but I watch a lot of videos about tone, mixing, etc, and have been a mix engineer for nearly 18 years. It's baffling that you wouldn't be able to hear the difference.

  • @monkeyxx
    @monkeyxx 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Just did the same test here. My findings are the same. Real speaker/mic is fuller, fatter. DI with two notes is thinner, scoopier, with a nasty treble on the very top. You can dial it in of course but that basic tonality is always there.

    • @monkeyxx
      @monkeyxx 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      the problem is the Two Notes IMO. A better DI like a Countryman 85 is going to sound 100% better than the Torpedo Captor, that's what I'm using now. I get my load from a Bugera PS-1 but I'll likely change that to an SPL Reducer.

    You can hear a little difference, but it’s virtually impossible to tell 10/10 what is the IR and what is the speaker. Both sound great.

  • @mihaitrusca2320
    @mihaitrusca2320 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    To be fair, that's not how you should compare tones. I believe it's common knowledge that two speakers/microphones are not sounding the same. Celestion used different cabs also. So, because of these 3 things alone the sound will be different. Not to mention that the position makes a huge difference (3/4 of an inch it's enough to hear it).
    The only way to check is to record your speaker on a track, then do an IR with the same microphone in the same position and then check. There will be no difference ;)

  • @01theuser
    @01theuser 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    The specific dynamics on the real amp is not in the ir, that's the biggest difference... I think I wouldn't be able to tell the difference in a song mix tho

  • @jannevaatainen
    @jannevaatainen 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    It's not just the speaker or the position of the mic, but also the cabinet size and construction really effects the tone, and also the gloth used in the cabinet. Even the tape that you use to mark the correct spot for the mic can make a noticeable difference.

    Not exactly a fair demo because you are comparing to an IR that was captured in a different room under different circumstances. Does the torpedo let you capture an impulse response? Direct comparison would really let you know what you are missing moving purely from speaker to impulse

    In conclusion, the IR examples sounded like ass*. Too many highs, too many lows, and everything in the middle was missing.
    * Of course, the examples depend on two things: (1) How well was the impulse response sampled?, and (2) how well did the 'live' example replicate the microphone placement of the IR? The IR could have poor placement, but faithfully replicate poor microphone placement in a real live situation.
