SUGGESTION. There's a UK video called 'Coast to Coast - 182 miles across the English Countryside'. As the title says, it's the about the experiences of a young man attempting to walk the 182 miles, alone, between the West and East coasts of England. I think you'll enjoy this video. Love from the UK

I understand completely what you were saying about the silence. I live in rural Scotland, just 16 miles from the coast. Whenever I am feeling too down to even cry I go to the woods or the beach and just sit. Matching my breathing to the waves or the breeze in the trees, listening to the birds and just easing myself into a relaxed state does wonders for my mental health. I have seen so many different wild creatures here, early one morning while walking my dog (now sadly dead) I saw a pine marten. These are rare and elusive animals so I stood as still as possible to make sure I got as much out of the encounter as I could. xxx

Mountaineering, potholing, caving and rock climbing are very popular in the UK as well as hiking.

They have Mountain rescue teams and there is also the air ambulance if you needed air lifting out of a situation, most hikers are prepared for these rugged hikes. Bonus is, no nasty beasties

The uk has lots of brilliant volunteers mountain rescue teams, rescue helicopters, and helicopter Ed teams in the world. There's a challenge called the three peaks, you have to climb the three tallest peaks in 24 hours. I did it in my early 20s, I wouldn't attempt it now, inmy 50s.

I like you spirit, NAIA - we're on the same page regarding the natural world, and how important it is for our mental wellbeing.
Covering the more dangerous hiking areas, we have very experienced volunteer Mountain Rescue teams, and if necessary (free) Heli-Med 'copters. So providing you have a charged phone with you, you're very unlikely to ever find yourself in a life-threatening situation. (Though they don't appreciate having to rescue completely unprepared fools!) .
The hikes he recommended are mostly pretty challenging, but there are plenty more that are a bit less strenuous, yet still show off stunningly beautiful views. One of my favourites is the South-West Coastal path - 630 miles in total, but any section of it will offer fabulous coastal vistas, punctuated with hidden white-sand bays, tiny fishing villages and welcoming pubs (where you can sometimes lay your head for the night). It's my "go-to" place when I get too stressed with London life, and I'm sure you'd love it.

The rocky routes where you have to use your hands we call scramble routes and ironically the easiest scramble routes rated grade 1 are the most dangerous as a lot of novices use them with zero scrambling experience and don't hire a guide, in Snowdonia where I live there are two famous grade 1 scramble routes which account for the vast majority of mountain rescues in the park, so much so both scrambles have mountain rescue headquarters stationed at the foot of them, as you mentioned ambulances I should add in the UK all our mountains are covered by a free mountain rescue service run by volunteers, and they also have access to the coast guard mountain rescue helicopters which is also a free service, so that's one nice thing about hiking in the mountains of the UK, if you have an accident rescue is usually very fast and completely free.

The best advice for British mountains is to dress correctly. The usual advice is to layer. A base layer plus a fleece plus an outer waterproof shell for your upper body; a base layer plus good trousers plus waterproof trousers for your lower body; and good quality boots over two pairs of socks on your feet. Obviously you don't wear all of this on you the whole time; but the great thing is, that, if severe weather conditions close in - which can happen on high British mountains all year round - you're prepared. Also, importantly, if you do have an accident, you can be comfortable while waiting for help to arrive.. Our Mountain Rescue services, who are volunteers, do a very good job, but they do get exasperated with ill-prepared tourists.
Particularly the more north you go, there seem to be many tough and fit people! There is reference to 'scrambling'. Grade I Scrambles are pretty taxing, but Grade III Scrambles ate best suited to mountain goats...

British mountain rescue services are excellent. They train constantly and have rescued people from some awful situations. It's best to stay safe, but if something does go wrong, the chances of a successful search and rescue are high.

    • @weejackrussell
      @weejackrussell 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Most of the mountain rescue people, if not all of them, are volunteers who give their own time and take risks to save people's lives. The air ambulances get to places that normal ambulances cannot reach.

@@weejackrussell I can only speak for Snowdonia where I live but our mountain rescue helicopters are run by the Coast Guard with RAF back-up if needed, the RAF actually used to do all the mountain rescues here but stepped back and were replaced by the Coast Guard several years back now, I know Prince William spent a little time piloting the mountain rescue helicopters when he was based at RAF Valley, I'm a local fell runner and wild camper so always found the thought of being recued by a Prince quite amusing! 🤣

You could spend several lifetimes walking in Britain. There's a little bit of everything. You should look at some of the longer walks, like the West Highland Way (I've done about a third of it over the years and I'd love to do the full thing in the one go). A Really good short walk is Conic Hill at Loch Lomond which takes a couple of hours. My most recent walk was Ben Lomond, also at Loch Lomond. I did it on my own (not a great idea), and bashed up my toes pretty bad during the descent! I'll be walking local to myself this weekend round a place called Boturich (amazing views, and it has a stunning wedding venue so all the videos of it are of weddings!) It's also on Loch Lomond...we are truly spoiled for walks here!

This might not be of interest to you, but some of the best footage of the UK mountains can often be found in sporting videos, one I'd highly recommend which was shot by a professional film crew and won several awards is on YT and called 'Dragon's Back Race 2012' and it follows the competitors in a race from North to South Wales over the top of the mountains, even if running doesn't interest you the actual cinematography of the mountains in the video is incredible and as a Welsh mountain runner myself one of the best videos I've ever seen which shows the true beauty of the Welsh mountains, especially Snowdonia, the footage they shot literally gives me goosebumps it's so good! The race also starts inside Conwy Castle which is so cool! (and also where I leave.... not in the castle, just near Conwy! 🤣)

PS. In the UK we actually refer to mountain running as Fell Running from the old Norse word for mountains 'fjall' which is still commonly used in parts of the UK, especially in the Lake District where all the mountains are referred to as 'Fells'.

  • @helenwood8482

The mountains of the Lake District filled the happiest years of my childhood and the memory of them inspires me still. I felt as if I met God on the mountains. This is a poem that was inspired by them.
    The Gifts I Didn't Want.
God gave me the gifts I didn't want.
I longed for beauty and He gave me tenacity.
I wanted ease and He gave me a hard road to tread.
I wanted love and He made me love truth too much.
I said to Him, "Make life painless or my heart unbreakable."
He shook His head and smiled and said,
"What if I make it beautiful?"
"Make me strong." I said and again He laughed.
"What if I make you stubborn beyond all strength?"
Then He lifted me upon a mountain
And showed me all the kingdoms of the Earth
And said, "None of this is yours,
But only the love of it and the grief of it
And the hope and the fear of it,
But none of it is yours.
For power and wealth are not real
And strength is naught but refusal to die
And beauty is becoming what you are
And all that exists and is true in this world or any
Is the love that makes you reckless and tactless and fierce
And the things you will do for that love.
God and I walked down the mountain together, side by side.
"I'm not who you think I am." I said.
He took my hand and said,
"So says each acorn when I call him Oak."

It is, however, very crowded at weekends and public holidays. You are best exploring it on week days. Very well known in the UK but, perhaps not so well known in other countries. Though, having said that, people visit stately homes such as Chatsworth but perhaps don't realise it's in the Peak District.

Cows are considered the most dangerous with an average of 5 deaths a year, only 1 of those deaths is members of the public though, the rest being agricultural workers, but there are also lots of non-fatal attacks, especially in calving season, I've been attacked twice by cows when out trail running but was lucky enough to be near easy escape routes.
