My spouse is Science teacher. I have referred her this channel without a second thought. Basically Mr. Jason explains so fundamentally. Here is the essence.
This is off topic but where do the moons for the planets come from? I read somewhere that maybe a part of the earth broke off at some point but the same thing would have had to happen for the other planets as well that have lunar orbits.
Where were you my whole life? I finally understand the rotation/facing problem that noone else had succeeded in making me truly understand. Oh, and I totally get it: voltage is the push.
Thankyou, but could you release this again with a view from the north or south pole? A polar view map of the earth would be easy to come by and a simple drawing of the moon as imagined from its pole with just one crater indicated would be easy to understand.
will a faster rotation or slower rotation of the moon affect the size of swings from low to high tide? Would one cause a larger or smaller tidal variation?
Thanks for this explanation. I wonder why the earth isn't tidally locked with the sun? The gravitational force between earth and sun is far greater than between earth and moon so shouldn't earth-sun tidal locking be expected?
i’m the furthest thing from an astrophysicist but my guess would be the same reason the earth doesn’t have one side locked to facing the moon. which is the earth has oceans which can bulge and compensate for the gravitational force of the sun.
i read your comment before finishing the video and answered with my best guess. but i just realized that he answered your question at 17:17. earth is far away from the sun and it’s size is very negligible compared to the sun, so the effect of a tidal lock is unlikely
There seems some confusing statements here: 10:03 so just as the Earth is attracted 10:06 attracting the moon and stretching it 10:08 out into sort of like an oblong shake 10:09 the oceans are coming out like this the Shouldn't it better sound like this? 10:03 so just as the Earth is attracted 10:06 by the moon and stretching itself 10:08 out into sort of like an oblong shake 10:09 the oceans are coming out like this
Question, so knowing that the earth has bulging oceans on two sides, what would theoretically happen if the Earth were to stop spinning as the moon where to disappear.. specifically concerning the earths sea level, would it be affected by raising? If so, how much raise in the sea level would occur?
Two points are unclear A the moon is egg shaped NOW, but if in the past it was spinning faster the gravitational force of the earth should have been applied to diffeeent parts of the moon during its revolution and the shape should be round. B the egg shape makes sense only respect to the poles (the axis), so the earth ahould prevent the axe to rotate, but of course it can't affect the spinning as all parts which spin have the same egg-shape
Could it be because of the distance away from the moon, why we get, perhaps an illusion that we are seeing the same side? The moon is always illuminated, reflecting light from the sun. There are times when the moon doesn't appear any at all, so what side of it is facing us during that time? Could it be the dark side? So, could that be the reason it becomes invisible to the naked eye? Just curious 🤔
Because the moments of inertia are different and gravity gradient forces and the gyroscopic stable rotation result in one stable relative attitude ,with small oscillations still present. Mathematically the 3 dimensional matrix equation for a rotating body and the matrix expression for the gravity gradient moment are very similar.
Yes, the moon completes a whole rotation on its axis once every 28 days approximately, the time it takes to complete one orbit of the earth. This is known as synchronous rotation.
But if the moon was rotating slow or fast, wouldn’t it bulge on the side facing the earth, thus creating a new bulge on the surface closest to the earth.
The bulge of the oceans are due to the moons gravity...acting on earth...and its earth's gravity that prevents the total escape of the entire Ocean....but surely this MUST be the main reason of evaporation of some water apart from and in addition to the sun's rays/ heat which raises the temperature and ALSO adds up to the process of evaporation. Just a thought...please elucidate on it... because it seems extremely likely..but never found it any text regards evaporation.

The orientation of the moon's near-side surface is different from different parts of the earth, but the same side always faces earth. The moon appears upside from the southern hemisphere compared to the view from the northern hemisphere.

I watched a couple of your videos and while you do a good job of explaining the topic I think the videos are a bit long winded. They could be considerably shortened. For instance it doesn't require a 19 minute video to explain why we always see the same face of the moon. A few minutes would suffice. Another video of yours I just watched explaining the tides was 34 minutes long but a video less than a third of that would be sufficient. And I noticed you have a 36 minute video explaining the phases of the moon but again that can be explained in a few minutes.
Knowing that gravity is not a force but that space itself is warped in the presence of massive objects, it would be fun to see this illustrated as well. In the way distant future even our earth will become tidally locked with our sun.
WOW! That sounds like an over-complicated explanation for "tidal locking". Isn't it simply that the moon's center of gravity is not in the center of it's mass? We now know that the Moon's gravitational forces are not the same or equal all over. So the moon has "settled" into an orbit where its "heavier" side is drawn to and facing the Earth. For example: Haven't you ever had a ball that wobbled? And when you put that ball down, it would always settle (stop rolling) on the same side? You could spin or roll it in any direction and as fast as you wanted, but it would ALWAY settle on the same side. Is that not EXACTLY what the Moon (or ALL "tidally locked" moons) are doing? It's so simple, yet you make it sound so complicated!
You are right. It's simple. All planets have a hidden side because their composition is not uniform and center of gravity is not the center of the sphere. This video is not overcomplicated but simply wrong.
The gravitational attraction of the sun is greater than that of the earth. This is unlike any satellite in the solar system regarding its parent planet.
How can we be so sure that it is tidal locking, and not something else like a Magnetic Coupling, or another force such as Gravitational locking, besides, the composition of moon's internal structure and its different density at different parts along its surface and volume may not be uniform, may be of different composition at different places along its internal structure, such that higher density areas of the moon will have higher gravitational pull towards the earths similar higher density areas, earth's core does not contain uniformly distributed materials, if this was the case we would find oil, iron, Gold, lead, and uranium, water and all other elements equally distributed throughout earths surface and core, this is not the case, therefore higher density areas of the moon locks to earth's gravitational pull. Of course in order for the current explanation of tidal locking the moon needs to be elongated a considerable amount, but the fact is its elongation is negligible. For example during high tide the sea level rises just a few meters high, compare this to the earths diameter of thousands of kilometers, this change is negligible.
Thank you for this explanation. Yes, the rotation of the Moon on its axis is the accepted scientific explanation. But, the moon does not independently rotate on its axis. It is locked in place by the Earth. The moon's perceived rotation is due to the Earth's rotation. The Earth's pull on the Moon prevents it from rotating independently. If the Earth stops rotating, a specific side of the moon would be facing the Sun at all times.
So if the earths gravity causes the bulging of the moon then it couldn’t have had it to tidally lock it.. if the gravity is latching into the bulge in the moon then it would’ve already had to have had it in order for that to be the case.
What isn't explained in this video, is that the mass of the moon is not distributed evenly throughout its structure, so the earth's gravity is interacting with the moon in an unbalanced manner, with more force being exerted on one side than on the other.
Good explanation of tidal locking. I, as many othwrs, previously thought it was mere coincidence that the rotational period of the Moon matches ita orbital period Now I understand the gravitational forces involved. It always strikes me as amazing that gravity can have that much of an effect. Thanks for the lesson.
There are aliens from Uranus living on the dark side of the moon. Actually...all aliens are from Uranus. They live underground there, so there are aliens in Uranus.
How can there be a direct hit from a astroid in such a small area to line up strait circle crater in so many places we see both sides of impact same height if crater?? And no spinning to with such large craters for it's side ,,,,,,,??? Are you sure 🤪
Im sorry but when u were moving the moon around the earth i did not see where it was rotating… the only way i understand this tidal locking is if the earth is rotating east to west and the moon rotates north to south
And the friction of the tides against the Earth's crust is slowing down the Earth's rotation. Momentum is conserved so the rotational energy lost ends up pushing the moon into a higher orbit. IERS is devoted to precisely measuring the Earth's rotation, and the increase in the moon's orbital distance can be precisely measured by bouncing laser beams off the retro-reflectors left by the Apollo astronauts.
So why is it that the moon is not pulled into the earth. If one considers the force required to change the shape ofbthe moon that's more than enough to get the moon crashing into the earth's atmosphere.???? What holds the moon in position???
You could ask the same question as to why all the satellites and the space station don't come 'crashing into the earth's atmosphere'. Do you know the answer to your question now?
The moon you say revolves eastward and rotates at the same rate. 27 days. That explains why we see what we do. But because of the earth's daily rotation it appears the moon goes around the earth westward every day ...about but not quite. There's a retrograde motion eastward, the direction of the moons revolving. Eh?
Ok. So the Moon is spinning and the Earth is spinning. And the same face of the Moon always faces Earth. The EArth rotates 360 deg once a day relative to the Sun. The Moon is smaller than the Earth in terms of diameter and circumference. So it must be spinning significantly faster than the Earth? Or Not? How much faster? Can you say how many times the Moon rotates per Earth day? Does the 27 day orbit of the Moon around the Earth affect the Moon's rate of spin? I guess it can be worked out mathematically ...
Basic moon is trapped by tidal forces of earth and moon pulling together and likje the moon pulls on earths oceans pulling tides up and down the same force acts on the moon and slowed its spin down to zero over billion's of years trapping it as we see it? the moon also acts am, a guard ,for many objects that could hit earth
Sorry! Wrong demonstration! Buy an orrery so that you know. Your demonstration is in a wrong axis which is not parallel or nearly parallel with the earth. In your demonstration moon marks goes up and down in rotation. But that this not the true case. Moon marks remains the same. What is up remains up. What is down remains down. With your explanation the axis is of the moon is 90 degrees that of the earth. When we say the moon is in tidal lock with the earth, it is locked, meaning it does not move as if it has an imaginary string between the moon and the earth. The string does not twist. About some years ago, another wrong explanation came up from unknown group. It even came out in National Science Quiz. It goes like this: Why do we see only one side of the moon? The answer is: Synchronicity. However, it cannot explain what 2 movements are in synchronous that coincides and make the moon motionless...rotation of the Earth with rotation of the moon; revolution of the Earth with rotation of the moon; revolution of the moon around the Earth against vs. Revolution of the earth, etc. Whatever movements of the Earth and the moon, nothing is in synchronous. If we visit a Fair Ground, and imagine you are at the center of a Merry-gO-round, pretend as if you are on Earth, of course you will see the horse is revolving around you but you see only one side of the horse. Again, with your explanation the mirror/marker placed by NASA do not change places...up then down. In your demonstration; its the side of the moon that faces the earth. Our moon is a natural satellite and its movement is not different from our artificial satellite, say communication satellite. It is revolving yet one side, the antennA is alwAys fixed towards the earth. It is not rotating. Otherwise, communication will be cut off.
You explanation is nice, but i doubt if it is correct. NASA did not know about this explanation. The moon is hollow, artificial and populated. Please update yourself.
Respected Sir Jason G... It is really misleading when you use two dimension pictures. Rather if you use Sphere... Globes 🌎 for both Earth and moon then your teachings will be more appropriate and appreciateble.
I suspect it's because the Earth is not close enough to the sun to become tidally locked. (But in the distant future the Earth would become tidally locked to the moon because the Earth's rotation is gradually slowing down due to friction with the oceans. This would happen in 50 billion years if the solar system survived that long. The Earth would then take about 49 of our current days to rotate once, which would then be the same amount of time it would take the moon to orbit the Earth (the moon is receding from Earth and hence its orbital period is increasing from its current 27 days). So the same side of Earth would always face the moon. But the sun will turn into a red giant and fry the Earth long before that happens.) If the Earth was substantially closer to the sun in a circular orbit I think the Earth would be tidally locked to the sun. Mercury is closer to the sun and is tidally locked, but not in a 1:1 resonance (I.e. it does not rotate exactly once on its axis for every orbit around the sun as the moon does with Earth). Instead Mercury is in a 3:2 resonance with the sun. It rotates on its axis exactly 3 times for every 2 orbits around the sun. I think the reason for Mercury's 3:2 resonance is that its orbit is quite elliptical; its distance from the sun varies quite a bit during its orbit. If its orbit was circular I think Mercury would be tidally locked to the sun in a 1:1 resonance as the moon is with Earth.

WOW! That sounds like an over-complicated explanation for "tidal locking". Isn't it simply that the moon's center of gravity is not in the center of it's mass? Yes, the rotation of the Moon on its axis is the accepted scientific explanation.
But, the moon does not independently rotate on its axis. It is locked in place by the Earth. The moon's perceived rotation is due to the Earth's rotation. The Earth's pull on the Moon prevents it from rotating independently.
If the Earth stops rotating, a specific side of the moon would be facing the Sun at all times.
If the earth stopped rotating, why would this disable the earth's ability to place a 'tidal lock' on the moon's rotation?
Nice 👍

So if the earths gravity causes the bulging of the moon then it couldn’t have had it to tidally lock it.. if the gravity is latching into the bulge in the moon then it would’ve already had to have had it in order for that to be the case.
What isn't explained in this video, is that the mass of the moon is not distributed evenly throughout its structure, so the earth's gravity is interacting with the moon in an unbalanced manner, with more force being exerted on one side than on the other.
Interesting. Thanks.
It would seen with the tilt as a wobble,,,it sure must be a perfect ball to not rotate in thousands of wobles over the years
Good explanation of tidal locking. I, as many othwrs, previously thought it was mere coincidence that the rotational period of the Moon matches ita orbital period Now I understand the gravitational forces involved. It always strikes me as amazing that gravity can have that much of an effect. Thanks for the lesson.
Thanks so much!
There are aliens from Uranus living on the dark side of the moon. Actually...all aliens are from Uranus. They live underground there, so there are aliens in Uranus.
IS MERCURY NOT CLOSE ENOUGH TO THE SUN TO BE TIDALLY LOCKED TO THE SUN
How can there be a direct hit from a astroid in such a small area to line up strait circle crater in so many places we see both sides of impact same height if crater?? And no spinning to with such large craters for it's side ,,,,,,,??? Are you sure 🤪
Easy explanation:
1 moon rotation movement about its axis is = to 1 moon translation movement around the Earth.
Yes but the video was explaining why this happens.
If the moon's rotation was not locked, that would have advanced science by many centuries.
Thank you
Thankyou sir you showed very nice truth wonder i am having some con tution in the rotation okay I don't know sorry any how great work thankyou sir
I think tidal locked should not be called a spin. Doesnt matter if there is a fantasy rotation, its a tidal lock.
The moon you say revolves eastward and rotates at the same rate. 27 days. That explains why we see what we do. But because of the earth's daily rotation it appears the moon goes around the earth westward every day ...about but not quite. There's a retrograde motion eastward, the direction of the moons revolving. Eh?
Perfect synchronism between the earth and moon. We won't sense any motion of either. It may work like a gear system.
Thanks
Well we have only seen another moon for a little time ,,,,,your guessing if it common
When the moon was 20k away from earth and when the moon moves beyond earth's gravitational influence would make a good topic here.
I get that our moon is tidally locked NOW but it must have been spinning in the past to be so round
At some point in history, though, surely the moon wasn't egg-shaped? At this time, if it was spinning, wouldn't it have stayed spherical?
Thank you, FINALLY a video that easily/clearly explains why we only see one side.
Globes 🌎 for both Earth and moon then your teachings will be more appropriate and appreciateble.
why earth moon grey
Mr. Gibson: Then why earth is not tidally locked in with sun?
