  • Today I want to talk about my travel goals for 2023.
I read somewhere that we should set intentions for the new year instead of making resolutions.
    What’s the difference?
According to Dr. Fumi Stephanie Hancock, the word "intention" denotes you have a plan, purpose, objective, and/or goals. “There is a sense of responsibility and added determination to see it through,” she says. “You have a set plan and structure with the understanding that it must be flexible whereas resolutions are not. You begin to really map out your journey while considering other things that may happen and could impede your journey.”
Intentions are phrased in a positive way. They should encourage and inspire you. Not make you feel as though you’ve failed if you miss a day working out or have an extra cookie after dinner.
    Setting My Intentions
I am a tax professional. For the past 8 years, I’ve focused my career on helping people get out of tax trouble. I left my job at IRS in 2015 to start my own business because I felt that I could be an assets to taxpayers who are struggling to meet their tax obligations. While taxes don’t set my soul on fire. I do believe that I provide a valuable service to my clients.
All that being said, what I really want to do, and what I think about on a daily if not hourly basis, is travel. I love to learn about people, cultures, food and explore the world. If I could do anything all day every day, it would be travel. Unfortunately, I haven’t quite figured out a way to make this my full-time career. But I have a plan. Like any other goal you have to work at it in order to achieve success.
My ultimate goal is to be able to earn a living from full-time travel. So how do I get there?
As James Clear states in his book Atomic Habits, “You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems.” - James Clear
This is where my intentions for 2023 come in.
    #1 - Take a Solo Trip
I love traveling with my friends and family. But with solo travel, you have complete control over your itinerary and can make decisions on the fly. You can travel at your own pace and not feel rushed or beholden to anyone else's schedule. You may also feel more confident and self-sufficient. I would suggest that you make solo travel a part of your travel journey. The trip doesn’t have to be an international destination. Have a spa weekend at a nice hotel or rent a cabin in the mountains. Go someplace just for you.
#2 - Take 1 domestic and 1 international trip per quarter
The love of travel isn’t’ always about flexing my passport. There are tons of things right here in my own state of California that I want to see and experience. There are some countries that I’ve visited that I would love to return to. Thailand, France, the UK, Costa Rica. There’s always more to explore!
    #3 - Take a road trip
When you take a road trip, you have the flexibility to set your own schedule and itinerary. You have the freedom to make spontaneous stops and detours along the way. It is also just a great way to disconnect from technology and daily life for a while and relax and take in the sights.
#4 - Visit one new country
This is self-explanatory. I believe I’ve visited 21 countries which means I’ve got over 100 more to go! Life isn’t getting any shorter. I haven’t really planned any specific countries although I’ve determined that I need to get to Bali this year. So let’s make that happen!
I know that it is going to take some time to reach my goal of full-time travel but I feel that setting specific travel related intentions are the first steps in achieving my dream career.
So, these are my travel related intentions for 2023. Comment on this video and let me know what intentions you have set for the year and how do you plan on achieving them.
