Hey folks, I was born and raised in the Flagstaff area and currently have a homestead just west of town. This real estate salesman didn't even really touch on what the worst parts of living in Flagstaff really are, in my opinion. And obliviously they have some strange priorities if winter road conditions rate worse than skyrocketing living expenses and a worsening condition of housing chrisis.
So let me tell you my local opinion on the worst 7 things about living in Flagstaff.
#1 Gentrification. As you may have heard the median price for a flagstaff home has reach nearly $500,000, but the vast majority of the Flagstaff job market does not support this. So many locals cannot afford this, resulting in what Flagstaff is calling a housing chrisis. Many people are being pushed to the rural areas around Flagstaff meaning they must now travel for work and no longer have a voting say in the town that they work, buy they groceries and supplies, ect.
#2 a terrible job market. As stated in the video we are a tourist town and a college town. A large portion of the revenue coming into our town is through tourism, thus service industry jobs, many related "entry level" jobs, and lots of manual labor. With a unlimited revolving supply of students coming to town business owners dont have to invest in their employees, there is always someone else who will do it for minimum wage. So Flagstaff has had to start making more aggressive policy on minimum wage than the rest of the state so that the people can afford to live here.
#3 real estate profiteering. Geographicly Flagstaff doesnt really have much room for growth, what space we have is limited. And a unusual high percentage of it are second homes and property owned by people other than the resident, and air-bnb is rampant. So many houses that could be a homes to a families of contibubting members of our town they are either empty or being used to line someones pockets.
#4 unresolved trauma between "Flagstaff" and the indigenous locals. At the foot of one of Dine’ s sacred mountains, we sit in traditional Native American territory with the nations largest reservation sitting just to our east. Our city has lots of lip service doing things like "land acknowledgements" at functions, publicly annoucing the knowledge of occupying stolen land and wanting to make a better furture...... Flagstaff is now apart of a law suite to take Navajo Nations ground water. Things like this create lots of local tension and systemic racial issues.
#5 we are in a food desert. Local agriculture is basically non existent, sourcing food from under 100 mile radius is very difficult, and local farm to table restaurants are also basically non existent. This also make us pretty vulnerable to major food shortages.
#6 traffic. Now those of you from big cities would think our traffic is fine but I grew up here and I have watched it get worse and worse. We really need more public transit infrastructure, bicycle and velomobile pathways, and improvement of localized markets and residential zone business laws.
#7 unhealthy growth. Growth is inevitable and can be healthy, if planned and executed properly. And in my opinion we should be focused on how our town can grow sustainably starting with our already existing families. It feel irresponsible to be inviting people in when the future of our existing local population is shaky at best. Many, many people I grew up with have moved away because its become too difficult to live and raise their families here.
There you have it, the worst (in my opinion) of living in Flagstaff.

Thank you for posting this. Flagstaff being a food desert will very probably be a deal breaker for me. It never even occurred to me.

During the winter...they block on coming ramps so you can't get to work as well. They try to block from phx drivers, but hurt local residents. Many of us are essential workers. Lived in Colorado for 18 years. We know how to drive in inclement weather. Infrastructure...city development, planning is bad here. Rather scummy. After living in CO., why can't they be more efficient like them? Must have phx planners? Transportation development is terrible as well. Lots of tourists getting in accidents with wildlife...etc. No jobs. And the jobs that are available go to NAU students that they can hire cheap. Then you have to end up driving out of town to find jobs. Realtors and investment groups ruining housing market and neighborhood communities. Most are Airbnbs. Then they trash neighborhoods or you get high crime from them. They have no investment. Also caravans of nomad RV's parked everywhere. Like the bad kind.

I live in Kauai Hawaii and now being looking to maybe moving back to the mine land and I think flagstaff as I do like outdoor activities
Are there good restaurants in flagstaff? Can you go down town an able to have a drink after 9pm ?

    • @livinginnorthernaz
      @livinginnorthernaz  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yes you can find a place to drink downtown after 9:00 pm. Some resturants close at 9 or 10, but others stay open past midnight. Still a college town :)

There are many really good restaurants here and surprisingly affordable. With NAU college here and many affluent folks here we know how to eat.

Do not sleep in your car, van, or RV in Flag. You may get towed your second night if you do it in the same spot. No overnight parking anywhere here. 😢

The only bad thing about living in flagstaff are all the people moving there increasing the cost of living and all the new buildings going up destroying the natural beauty of what flagstaff used to be known for.

Hi Dawn! I’m getting married in May and my fiancé and I are wanting to move to flagstaff! I’m also finishing my master’s in early childhood education and am on the job hunt right now for some teaching positions. Do you have any opinions or info about the Flagstaff Unified District?
Love your videos, especially about what it’s like to live in Flagstaff, it makes me so excited to move there!!

Flagstaff Unified School district is supposed to be very good. I've heard great things from people who have student taught there. My friend's daughter went to Demiguel, which is a top rate school in Flagstaff, and she liked it.

As someone who went through Flagstaff unified school district.......it was awful.
Pine forest elementary and FALA are amazing schools who foster brilliant people.
