Roxy's FR-1x Free Orchestration User Sets

Copy the files to an empty USB flash drive or memory stick. Do not put them in a folder. That is, copy them to the root. Follow the instructions in the PDF documentation provided.
As I described in the video, the orchestral sounds that these user sets provide are organized with "Song Orchestration" in mind. That is, they are organized such that you can more conveniently choose different versions of a particular instrument. For example, you can conveniently compare two or three different saxophone sounds to determine which one is most appropriate for playing a particular part of a song. One song part might demand a mellow sounding alto sax, another a more harsh baritone. Using different sax sounds for different parts within the same song is a trick that keyboard players have been using for years to make their music sound more authentic. You choose. You, after all, are the musician. It's your job to decide what sounds you will use to play each part of your various songs.
The idea is for you to configure the FR-1x's single User Program Bank to represent the orchestration of a single song of up to 8 parts. To accomplish that you save to each User Program Location Button within the FR-1x's single User Program Bank whatever sound and features you wish to use for that corresponding part of the song performance. When completed your song orchestration needs to be saved to USB flash drive for convenient recall on an as needed basis during your onstage performances. You can build up a complete library of song performances.
This more modern approach to playing an electronic instrument relieves you of the effort of having to remember what instrument sounds you want to use for each part of your many different song performances, as well as where those instrument sounds are located on your instrument. It also allows you to make certain orchestral changes that would otherwise be impossible to accomplish while playing onstage. When the audience compares two musicians having equal playing skill, one using a properly prepared multi part orchestration and the other choosing his orchestral variety interactively, on the fly, while playing, the audience will always prefer the properly prepared, multi part orchestration. Glenn Miller proved that many years ago.
Basically, you decide in your music studio which instrument sounds to use when playing each part of your song, and then from that point on your instrument remembers everything necessary to play the complete performance, and not just the starting point, it remembers everything. You are now relieved from having to think about certain things while playing different songs onstage, things like: "What instrument sound should I use now?", and worse, "Where is that particular sound located on my instrument?" All you need to do is load the song from the USB flash drive, and then activate whatever User Program Location Button represents the corresponding parts of your song. Typically Location 1A will represent Part #1. If your orchestration has only 4 parts, you can use User Program Locations 1A, 2A, 3A, and 4A. If you have more than 4 parts, you'll have to make use of the "B" locations. The FR-1x is capable of playing an 8 part orchestration of any song.

Best of luck with them. If you orchestrate your songs to consist of multiple parts and then save each song individually as a User Program Bank to the USB flash drive, people will be amazed at the wide variety of sounds within each song, as well as the wide variety of different sounds from song to song. Yet each song is played in the very same simple way, by pressing User Program Location buttons in sequence. Other people who play the FR-1x will be amazed and scratch their heads wondering how you do it. They'll think you are a genius.
@@RoxysMusicStore Thanks. I am 75, so like the small FR 1x. I use to play an Irio Model G then moved up, but at 29 pounds it is too heavy for me. I really like being able to use the organ and synthetic sounds. I always liked to use the organ and acoustic accordion together. Don't think I can do that on this one. You can have orchestra and organ, but not sure about accordion and organ. Thanks again for writing and doing the video. Really enjoying the accordion. I have had my fr-3x for about 4 years, and only realised on watching this video that I could store more than one bank of user programs (must remember to fully read all manuals in future).
Hi Stephen. I hope I did not misspeak somewhere in the video. Your FR-3x has four "User Set Locations", but only one "User Program Bank" of 10 parts, two parts more than the FR-1x. Song orchestrations are saved, imported, and exported as "User Program Banks". Since the instrument has only one "User Program Bank", you have to load song orchestrations from the USB flash drive into the instrument one at a time, on an as needed basis. You load them by number, as you saw me do in this video for the FR-1x. It's a quick operation, and then you are ready to play a new song. You don't need orchestration user sets to do this. All your orchestrations can be using the 10 standard orchestral sounds and different accordion reed sounds from the various factory sets. But if you created four "Orchestration User Sets" as I did for the 1x, your orchestrations would have access to 40 orchestral sounds. Also, if you organize them as I did, you will find them easier to audition for selection into one of your song orchestrations. Good luck with it.

I already use my own sets, as I find the factory ones to be useless for what I need, I was just labouring under the impression that the storage of user programs on a usb flash drive was limited to single programs instead of complete banks of 10 ie program 1 equates to coupler one etc.
So I never bothered saving them to flash only to the internal memory, and I did most of my playing using user sets.
While that was fine most of the time it could be tricky if I needed to change the bass or chord orchestration at the same time as the treble accordion or. Orchestral voice.
Now after seeing your video I have started to create a lot more banks of user programs from my user sets which is making my work a lot easier and allowing me to use a lot more sounds in the space of a song etc.
I wish Roland would bring out a software update to allow the storage of transposition data within programs but at the moment they seem to have dropped any support for the fr-3x.

I'm so glad you followed through with further clarification of your original misconception. I suspect that many FR-1x and 3x owners don't realize that when they use the "User Program Save to USB" operation from the parameter list, they are saving not just one "User Program Location", but rather a entire bunch, often called a "User Program Bank". On the FR-1x the same operation saves 8 "User Program Locations", on the FR-3x it saves 10 "User Program Locations". Realizing that reveals the true power of the "User Program Feature", and the primary reason why the feature exists on many electronic instruments. It is primarily for saving complete song orchestrations consisting of many parts.
Having said that, some models do support different forms of the "User Program Save" operation. For example, on the FR-4x, there are three forms of the operation. I can save as a file a "Single User Program Location". Or, I can save as a file a "Single User Program Bank", which consists of 14 "User Program Locations". Or, I can save as a file "All User Program Banks", which consists of 98 "User Program Locations".
Many people view the instrument in different ways, and you can see that as the different models evolve, Roland is trying to satisfy the different playing strategies of all customers. Their goal is to allow as many customers as possible the option of using their own personal playing strategy. For example, most accordionists view a "User Program Bank" not as a mechanism for playing one particular song, but rather for playing a particular genre of music. Roland even suggests this playing strategy in their documentation for the various models. However, if you read your instrument's owner's manual carefully, you will see that they also mention a bank being reserved for a particular song orchestration.
If one looks at the evolution of electronic keyboards when this concept was first introduced, it is clear that it's original purpose was for saving "Multi Part Song Orchestrations". Not all accordionists see it that way, and hence they don't use it in that way. That's up to them. It's their instrument and they can play it the way they want. My role is simply to educate people about the features and then let them decide for themselves.
Although I am not really a musician, but rather a technician doing product support work, my preference is to use the "User Program" feature on all models to support a playing strategy that is well established the keyboard community where the feature first evolved, and that is to build up a personal library of purposefully designed multi part song orchestrations that I can easily pull up on demand to play at any time. That way, when asked to play certain songs, I can deliver a performance that is much better than I could otherwise accomplish by playing the instrument interactively, hunting and pecking the instrument for different orchestral features in real time, on the fly, as I play. And most importantly, by using the "Multi Part Song Orchestration" approach, I can easily accomplish multiple orchestral changes that would be impossible to do otherwise. I end up with a performance that has the added advantage that is has been consciously and logically designed by me for creating a particular effect in a specific song. Thus, each of my songs within a particular genre are not limited to the very same group of orchestral voices, but rather the instrument's entire library of voices. I may play only two or three voices within a single song, but the important difference is that those voices are selected from the instrument entire library, not just a subset that is available within a certain "Set" or "User Program Bank". It is really the most powerful way to use any electronic instrument, keyboard or V-Accordion.
But don't take this advice in the wrong way. If you are comfortable playing your V-Accordion using a "Set" approach, that's fine. Same thing with a "User Program Bank Genre" approach. It's your instrument. Whatever works for you. But many people, when they realize the tremendous orchestral advantage of the "Multi Part Song Orchestration" approach, they fall in love with it.
One last thing, this "Multi Part Song Orchestration" approach is not for all your playing. It's for your best performances. If ever I was asked to perform in front of an important audience, I would want my performance to be properly orchestrated.
Leon, your're making this acoustic accordionist very interested in the 4x. I've got a Roland 3s--but man, you make it look like orchestration is something this old guy can do by following your clear instruction.
Thanks for the positive feedback. On the 4x it is even easier for the reason that song orchestrations can be saved to and recalled from USB memory by name, not by number as demonstrated in this video. Plus the 4x provides onboard editing. The 4x is an orchestrator paradise while still being affordable. The 8x provides even more capability.

If I load all of your Roxy User Sets and the Roland expansion kits, will I still retain the same factory sounds that I have now when I am not using user sets or will factory-installed sounds be overwritten?

Great information and explanation. My question is: Can additional instruments been added to or exchanged for ones already in the accordion. I would like a bagpipes sound but found that it is only in the more expensive Roland accordion if I am correct.
Although on the FR-1x a more limited number of sounds can be made immediately available at any one time, it can be configured to play any sound available on the more expensive FR-7x. This includes the standard Roland Orchestral and Alpine add on expansion kits. The free download of this video gives you access to 64 that we at Roxy's felt that most accordionists would like. By using Roland's Set Editor Software, you are free to create your own User Sets that make others available. It's up to you.

So basically i have downloaded the Dalape Sound Expansion in m PC. When trying to Load a User set for example 105.ST3 to my Roland Fr1x, the name of the file "105" is displayed on the display, i press enter and then Select the first memory slot. But then when i select that user set no sound is produced as if installed an empty Sound Set. Am i missing some step? Should i upload anything else prior to thesee steps to my Accordion? Ty in advance

Hi Leon, thanks for the free sounds. My FR-1x won't seem to play WAV files from a USB flash drive, any ideas as to where I'm going wrong? I have a BK-7m. When I record to a flash drive it will not play on my FR-1x
Drocca Roland hi, I just got my fr-1X and had the same problem! I found that you must make sure the bitrate is 44.1 for the wave. Others do not work. Ditto with mp3. I think this info is on page 32. Hope this helps.

Hello, I have a Roland Fr-1xb and I'm having trouble with button noise when connecting it to an amplifier. The noise is simply too loud and it's pretty annoying. As I'm pretty sure this button noise is an emulation, do you know how can I reduce it or remove it?

It can be any USB flash drive?
Use a good quality, properly formatted USB flash drive, as you would for any electronic instrument. Format the flash drive on your computer. Note that this free download contains sets that are useful when you create a User Program Bank to represent a song orchestration, a User Program Bank that is then saved to a USB flash drive, after which it is used on an "As Needed" basis for your onstage performances. As I state in the video, it is not practical to use these User Sets to perform in front of an audience using a Set Oriented playing approach, that is by interactively selecting the set where your desired sound is located and then the corresponding Register Button. You may think it's cool to have access to 64 sounds rather than the FR-1x's original 16, but it is not practical to play onstage performances in that manner. Instead, you create a User Program Bank to represent each individual song consisting of as many as eight parts, a bank in which each User Program Location contains the sound that you want for that particular part of the song. See other videos about the FR-4x and BK-7m that describe this more modern playing strategy. It's called the "Saved Multi Part Orchestration" playing strategy. Your flash drive will contain many such files, each one representing a different song orchestration. To play each song onstage you import it into the instrument from the flash drive. It only takes a few seconds. To play another song, you import another file from the flash drive. Do you get the idea? This is the way any modern electronic instrument having a wide variety of orchestral features should be played. Best of luck.
