I purchased an 2014 F150 from a dealership in 2016,not at all low cost but at the time I needed it to get to my work site that's 700 mile away. So I purchased an after market warranty for 2500.00 that would extend the 62000 factory warranty an additional 2400 mile. I had the truck for a week then finally drove to work. When I arrived at work.i had to go into the guard shack to get clearance for entry , I left my truck running. When I got out of the truck , I could hear a top end knock in the engine. And trust I know, ide been an auto mechanic for 30 years at that time. So.... I phone the dealership and arrange an appointment to have it fixed when I would be done my three week tour of duty. When I arrived at the dealership, they examined the noise. They told me it wasn't a warranty issue, but they could fix it for 2000.00 Needless to say, I refused. The warranty was useless. After 6 month of negotiable communication , with no resolve, I got , let's say I had enough. So I told them, let's be clear I'll go Public and diss your dealership in a large way. I want you to take this truck back. They phone me. Bring the truck back sir,we will give you full paid amount for the truck. And said , we have another truck here for you. I'm still driving the truck today that they swapped out for me that has run perfectly for me since , with proper maintenance, regular oil change at 3000 miles With Mobil-1 and K&N oil filter. Tranny's service every 30000 , fluid and filter. Ford Pro is right. Be sure to participate !!!!

During my one year incarceration at a Ford dealership, we had a several time repeat customer with a very clear rod knock (late 80’s 5.0 in a Lincoln). Back when the warranty was 3/30. It was dangerously close to ending. The older gentleman loved his car and didn’t have much else in his life. We called the rep who refused the repair and said wait til it hard fails. We knew it would last past the warranty. We took the car out back and put it on stands. Drained the oil and let it run. Took a day and a half! Just before it punched out, we put the oil back in. It barely made it around to the service bay. Called the rep and it spun the bearing and seized while we showed him the car. I am pretty sure that things are a bit better nowadays, but this was why I hated manufacturers and dealerships. You are bringing back nightmares but I can’t stop watching your stuff.

I think this is true across the industry. People need proper training on how to run the operating procedures of warranty as service writers and the salesmen need training on what all of the fine print means and how to properly explain it all to the customer. I think that the manufacturers need to make an effort in making those resources available to the people in the field and consumers need to pay better attention as well. Thank you for your insight!

Once again, you're 100% right. My Chevy Sonic was in the dealer under warranty for a head gasket/cracked head at about 35k, and it was within the warranty. The dealer calls me and tells me that "everything is covered but the air intake hose". I told them, "You can eat that or you can pay me to do your work for a defective part and design. By the way, I'd have to do it on a Saturday and if I was clocked in, I'd got X dollars and hour. Your choice". They ate it.
About a month later, I got a letter from GM. What do you know, GM issued a special coverage letter for the air intake hose, and if a customer paid for the repair they could get a reimbursement. It's things like that that anger customers. You knew you had a problem and you tried to sweep it under the rug hoping like you said, 1) people don't know, 2) they won't do their homework and 3) that it's obviously a bad design.
100% right again on the coding. Same with medical procedures. I had a doctor tell me a certain procedure wasn't covered. When I said, "How about if it's coded this way?" Sure enough, the insurance company covered it. It's all in how it's coded.
Another time my sister had an issue with her 2000 VW Jetta. It was back to the dealer for about the eighth window regulator, they were bad and the redesign was bad too. When changing the oil, I noticed the car was developing a head gasket issue. I told her to tell the dealer. She did. They said, "No problem found". I remember, she called me at work to tell me. I said, "Make sure that they document that on the paperwork and that the mileage and date is correct on the invoice". Fast forward again a few months later, it's back at the dealer again. My sister said the dealer told her that the dealer said the head gasket was bad and it was on her for the repair. She said, "Nope, it's on you. I brought it back to you and you said there wasn't a problem. Now there is. You're going to repair it at no charge, or I'm leaving it here and taking my plates off. I'm going to sue you and VW NA as well". Boom, they "found a way" to cover it. Fortunately, she sold that car in 2010. I didn't shed a tear when it left.

I once purchased a used vehicle and they sold me an extended warranty 100k mi/5 years whichever comes first for $1200 and said if I don’t make a claim I get my full $1200 back. The guy even told me, most people think they can beat the system, not make a claim and get the money back but it never happens but insisted it was still worth it because the chance of not having a repair that’s less than the cost of the extended warranty was very slim and that it’s worth it for peace of mind. Which I agreed, long story short I actually didn’t end up making a claim and got my $1200 back five years later! It’s a win win either way. Not sure how common this money back guarantee is tho?

I was on several committees that met twice annually at HQ to help address manufacturer/dealer issues. One thing I can share based on the content of this video, it is not the manufacturers that don't want the extended warranties and service contracts sold. It is each individual dealer. Ford would train, incentivize and beg dealers to sell these products.
The issue will always be that dealer staff think there is not enough profit in those products to make it worth the sale.

I've dealt with one aftermarket warranty on a 15 3.2 transit which the alternator locked up, (could not get the pulley to spin) and it shredded the belt. They wanted voltage output readings to determine if it failed. The pulley being seized wasn't what they considered a failure of the alternator, only a low voltage reading so they refused to cover it. Definitely not a warranty company I would give my hard earned $$$ to. You might save a few hundred VS ESP but it might also cost you thousands later.

Also at certain intervals air filter, cabin filter, trans fluid etc. Our dealership sell tonne of these. These are the best maintained vehicles at the dealership in my opinion.

had a '91 grand am for which bought an additional warranty that picked up after the factory warranty. problem is, despite it being a hometown dealership and my uncle being their master mechanic, the "back office" guys were a bunch of sleezeballs that operated outside the realm of human decency and trust. Just outside the factory warranty the head gasket blew. It took at least 3 hours (multiple sessions) of yelling at the warranty people that this dealership set us up with, to get it covered (was a $1100 repair back in '94, or so). If you read the fine print, it covered "internally lubricated parts." We were told it was bumper to bumper. DON"T EVER TRUST THE DEALERSHIP, they will lie and cheat you any way they can. They're not there to be your friend, despite how they act. Don't buy it when they pretend to be your best friend, like you guys are going to get together and have a beer later that week.
In the end, it was covered, but I have a hard time trusting ANY warranty company since.
Heck- bought an Oldsmobile aurora (2002, i believe) from this same dealership back in 05 or 06. Came with a 3-month, 3-thousand mile warranty. Well, about 2-1/2 months and about 2800 miles into the warranty, the front hub needed to be replaced. They said my warrant was expired, i was over the 3k. turns out, they produced a sheet of paper that I had signed and that they had turned into the state, that showed when i bought the car it had X amount of miles on it.
    1) When I test drove the car the first time, it was about 500 miles BEFORE "X." I.e.., let's say the car had 40,000 miles when I test drove it; the paperwork they turned into the state showed the car had 39,500 miles when I bought it!
    2) i had never, in my effing life, seen that paper, let alone SIGN it!! It looked NOTHING like my signature!! You MIGHT be able to make out 2 letters in my signature; this paperwork looked like a penmanship teacher signed it!
Two strikes you're out, with me. Never stepped foot on that lot again. It was covered, in the end though. It took my loud, 280lb ass (I was a farmboy that was benching 455lb; to say intimidating is an understatement)(at the time :P) yelling at the service manager in the middle of the service drop off bay, attracting the attention of at least 15 people (people were even coming out of the waiting room to see what was going on) about this paperwork that was fraudulently filed to the state, to get it done.
I HATE car salesmen and car finance men.
    1) READ THE WARRANTY and KNOW what it is covering!
    2) VERIFY the warranty company is a reputable company, don't trust the dealership to have your best interest at heart! Event those small corner-lot dealerships make the owners 2-3 million per year. They're there to sell cars and make money, not be your friend.

As a fellow ford tech, but in the UK I wish aftermarket warranty was as simple as it seems to be over there. I've recently had a bad mmt6 gearbox, input shaft bearing detonated, even split the casing in two places. Customer had only covered 500 miles since purchase, so images are sent off via email...after 3 weeks of debating they sent an engineer...who took another week to arrive, after 2 days more of waiting for the engineers report the aftermarket warranty reject the request for a replacement transmission and state the customer should have heard the failure before it happened.... absolute waste of time. Ramp out of action for a month just for them to pay a few hours for transmission removal.

I worked as a side mechanic at a Buy here Pay here for awhile. Please don't judge me im sorry but this lot offered an "On the lot Warranty" on some vehicles. A lady bought a PT cruiser, motor went out and she had the warranty. She brought it in, the lot turned it in to the warranty company they were associated with and was paid X amount up front to replace this ladies engine. No engines were available locally in junk yards cheap so this ladys PT sat in that garage for months until after I left because they couldn't find a cheap engine to make profit off the warranty. Oh yea, she stillnhad to pay her scheduled payment every single time or they would repo it. Dont know what happened to that car, but that is the one I think about all the time 15 years later

I have a 2014 Jeep Patriot that at 7 yrs old has 21,000 miles on it. The manual trans started to fail at 19,000 mi, and now is really bad. I took it to the dealer where I bought it, but Chrysler takes no responsibility for the failure bacause the warranty ran out after 5 yrs. After 3 days in the shop, dealer called to tell me they think it's the throw-out bearing. They want $1500 to replace it, unless it needs a new clutch, which would add another $600. i think they have mis-diagnosed the problem, and I will be picking up my car tomorrow and taking it elsewhere.

An elderly lady I know got a new 2011 Grand Marquis. The selling dealer went out of business. At 7,200 miles in 2013 her fuel pump went out after the guy at Lowe's slammed her trunk super hard and they towed it to the local Ford dealership and they charged her $1,700 for a new fuel pump and told her it was up to her to get her money back from Ford Motor Company on her own, because "Mercury" went under. She never did. She died just after this and a friend that sold it to her new bought it back from her family and ran the auto-check on it, as he owned a used car store and he saw where Ford was billed for a Warranty repair on her fuel pump. manufacturers want the parts back to analyze them to see why they failed. If it was a quality defect, they make the supplier share in the repair cost. While it does keep the dealer/mechanic honest in some cases, a lot of parts come back no fault found. When this happens, the manufacturer can look for root cause if it happens on multiple claims and improve diagnostic procedures or software diagnostics. (On an electrical component, it could have been the wiring leading to the component and not the component itself. It can also be a software bug)

Q: Do you think that the manufacturer requires the warranty parts back because they want to see if it is a manufacturing defect, or bad part design rather than they don't trust the dealership? It seems to me for Ford, it would give them a whole lot of good quality control information by having the parts returned so you could track down a bad supplier or even a bad batch of parts if needed.

Customer also usually gets a shorter warranty than the manufacturer gets from the supplier, so a customer might get 3 years, but the supplier gave the manufacturer an 8 year warranty on the same part, so when a part is out of warranty the customer pays the costs AND then the manufacturer charges the supplier the same cost. Manufacturers really screw their suppliers.

First off let me start by saying that I'm a new subscriber to your channel and I love the wealth of information that you are providing. I have a couple of questions about the 2000-2007 Ford Taurus with the 3.0 24V Duratec engines. 1. Have you ever worked on one of them? 2. If you did, do you ever have nightmares about working on them? The reason I ask, is because we have a 2002 Taurus SEL with only 70,000 miles and the torque converter splines stripped out when we going down the road and the car left us stranded on the side of the road. It took me 3 months to replace the T.C. (I don't have a lift) I was also wondering if there is any kind of extended warranty or TSB on these cars? BTW ... We also have a 2002 Ford Taurus with the 3.0 Vulcan engine and it looks like that car is 500 times easier to work on. I also noticed that on the 2000 Tauruses with the Duratec engine has the water pump in the front which makes it a lot easier to work on. Did Ford just put the water pump in the back to make these cars harder to work on or was there a legitimate reason for doing this?

At the dealerships you have worked at, how did the service managers handle incorrect diagnosis and repair costs? I have only had my 09 Crown Vic at a dealer for repair once, and I will probably never visit another because of how awful the experience was.
I'll try to keep my story brief. 7 years ago I purchased my Vic from a private party. On my way home I discovered that my windshield washers didn't work... The wipers worked fine but no washers. The day after purchase my father borrowed the car so he could wash and detail the engine bay. Wellllll he power washed the DBW throttle body. I limp mode'ed the car home. I'd never seen or worked on a DBW system before at that point, but I suspected the TB. While it was home I looked into the washer system with Alldata diagrams from a buddy. The multi function switch was electrically sound and it appeared that the logic board on the wiper motor wasn't commanding the pump on.
Having no experience with DBW my father figured he would take the car to a dealer on his dime (since he broke it) to have them sort out the wrench light, and while it was there, fix the washers. I relayed my washer testing results to the service manager when I limped the car there and pointed out what appeared to be a logic fault. The dealer replaced the TB, and ran a new wire around the engine bay with 2 hours of labor. I showed up the next day and the washers didn't work in the lot. The dealer ordered and installed a multi function switch to the tune of $225 plus another hour of labor even though I verified it was fine myself. The washers worked ONCE and quit a 1/4 mile away. 3 days later they called me and said they weren't sure what to do. I told them REPLACE THE WIPER MOTOR! That's where the logic is! He said he trusted his tech looked at it, but couldn't verify. The next morning I showed up with the Alldata wiring diagram in hand and showed the service manager what I had told him DAY ONE that the wiper motor was where the logic for the washer lived and that everything up to that point was 100% fine when I brought the car to him. I told him that I expected a refund for the multifunction switch but I'll pay the labor, and I wanted the old switch reinstalled. They had tossed the old switch, and he told me point blank that there wasn't going to be a refund for the part I didn't need. They replaced the wiper motor at a pathetic 25% discount and waived the 30 minutes of labor.
    Guess what? EVERYTHING WORKED!
I had to show a FORD dealer's service manager a wiring diagram for my FORD car! I'd never been so angry! The wiper motor fiasco ended up costing MORE money than replacing the f@$#ing electronic throttle body!
Is this a common thing at other dealerships? I know there are always guys that say 'do this and only this' but holy crap! I wasn't experienced with the vehicle yet so I went with what they suggested... twice... hoping that a Ford pro was better than myself at diagnosing a problem with a Ford but ended up regretting having anybody look at that issue. It can't be common practice to force a customer to eat easily swapped parts because the originals were discarded, is it?
Ugh, rant over. I need a beer.

My sister got, from a new Ford dealer, a 2000 Taurus in 2002 with 34,000 miles. It had factory warranty and an extended warranty aftermarket that she paid the $50 transfer fee to transfer the aftermarket extended warranty into her name.
34,100 miles the transmission goes out(the next day). Towed to the selling new Ford store, after a week they requested all the service records including the required transmission service that should have been done at 28,000 miles. Of course we didn't have those records. We hadn't tagged it yet, so we looked at the title and called the elderly lady that got it new and traded it in. She left the paper work in her mail box and my sister got it. At 33,500 miles the transmission was rebuilt at a Ford dealer 250 miles away where she hit a curb and busted the transmission cooling line and kept driving about 30 miles and fried the transmission. Rebuild because of a chunk missing out of the case and not good for a core, so her insurance didn't want to pay the $1,000 core.
We took all this info the our local dealer and they said they could get into the transmission, but if it was a workmanship issue from the 250 mile away dealer, we would have to pay the full bill and then sue the 250 mile away dealer. We paid $400 to have it towed to that dealer in Edmond Oklahoma. They put a new valve body on it and a new torque converter in it.
After 500 miles it went out again. Same issue. Towed to Edmond from Fayetteville Arkansas. They replaced a few more parts including the computer and 500 miles later it went out again, so they did a total rebuild. Each time we had to pay a $200 deductible because the factory warranty was void on this transmission bc of the rebuild.
1,000 miles later it went out again.
Ford guys came down from corporate and it was a spring in the transmission that was too weak from being over heated during the original fluid loss overheat. Fixed and my Sister sold the car a few months ago with 125,000 miles on it now and the transmission was still fine.
So never get a rebuild on an engine, transmission, or rear axle if you are over 100 miles from home as if you encounter issues later and its a workmanship issue, your local dealer will make you pay the full bill and its up to you to try and get your $$$$$ back from the far away dealer and prove it was their fault.

I wish you were close to me as I know you were in IL last I knew. I'm in Chicago and would have no problem getting in tune with you if you are not beyond 2hrs away... Anyway, I dropped my F150 off for service yet again and it's on the ESP warranty. Is it possible to add a few hrs of shop time to the ESP to get the customer participation goin? Appreciate you and all your knowledge, thanks in advance.

@@FordBossMe That's great! I drive like it's my job lol. I drive about 60k a yr at least, I was just up by Dundee buying a few guns back in November.
If these cats can't figure it out I'll be heading your way. I told the head service writer that I want to add two hrs to look at the engine that is ticking and another hr to look at the front hubs. It's been in at least 10 times for both of the front hubs grinding like hell! I don't think we have many mechanics around these parts, seems like at best they are parts changers... You know what you are doing and I can appreciate that fact! I've been turning wrenches for fun (drag racing) for 25yrs plus so when I get a line of bs from these ppl I don't get into it with them I don't like to argue I'd rather do some research and find a guy who is capable and enjoys their work. Hopefully this gets solved as the ESP is over in June! Thanks much for the quick response, Ernie.

Well, I got my truck back yesterday but to my dismay the tech nor the service writer put a second line for me to participate in the program. The service manager insisted that I not do that and that it was not necessary. I told him that my 2nd esp is going to be ending this June and with all the trouble I've had with the front hubs I'd feel more comfortable doing the way I asked. He proceeded to tell me that both front hubs and actuators were completely charged out to the tune of north of $2,000 and that he had to get clearance from Ford due to the cost. I told him that I was told that each side was "completely" changed out 4-5 times yet here I am..
Next concern was the tick that I was hearing from the new engine (long block) that another dealership had done. I quit driving the truck about 16 months ago completely but still had the oil changed 3 times just due to it sitting around and only being started and ran for a solid hour every 7-10 days. I noticed the tick back in June, did nothing about it because I was only running it on the above schedule, I had the oil changed in the end of September and the tick was still there. I then noticed that for whatever reason it was starting to go away back in January and was completely gone by the time I had the time to get it in to the shop. The fool at Rizza Ford in Orland that put the new motor in I have absolutely no faith in. After the catastrophic failure of the engine which resulted because number 3 & 6 pistons going to crap which in turn made it possible for the rods to make some nice windows in the block but not before sending carnage throughout the motor and turbos. Even with finding metallic in the turbos and just about every line and so on, the tech said that it wasn't that bad and the turbos, lines, etc, just needed to be cleaned up but definitely not changed... At any rate I know the fool is so slipshot he forgot to even connect the cold side of the turbos so the acceleration was inexistant but unfortunately I couldn't tell until a day after picking the vehicle up due to it raining out and driving conditions not being normal. I found several other things under the hood that were either out of place, not connected, or missing after I started going over everything.
I don't know why the engine would start ticking but go away with no use other than running. I put a few thousand miles on the new engine before parking it 16 months ago but at this point I'm at a loss as to how to make sure I'm covered with respect to the engine especially after this June? If you have any ideas I'm definitely interested and would love to hear from you. Thanks again for all your insight.
PS don't forget I'll drive up to your place at the drop of a hat for you to put eyes on it. God bless, Ernie.

When I went to for they always get me cuz I have to wait on the part 1-3 days …I only have one car so sucks and the dealer usually tells me they can get aftermarket part but with no warranty…good work thanks for your insight
