This is one of those forgotten skills. Not sure if it will make a comeback, but still, this is a really interesting skill to have and he seems to have a very deep passion towards paper making. Well, hope his demand grows. Thanks for sharing National Geographic.
People love mass produced stuff - cheap and in bulk. But there is passion in love in a handcrafted item and there are people who are into that (me) and willing to pay good money for anything "tailor-made".
There truly is something special and unique about handmade items, isn't there? We're glad that people like Gangolf are keeping the practice of making things this way alive.

Yes, several trees died in the making of this video, but they were all bad, bad trees. One of them did nothing all day but turn oxygen into carbon dioxide.. he was just THAT evil.
New Message Just for your information...the paper he was making (or which they made in those days) was not made from trees. Paper made from trees is actually the shittiest you can get.
Had you read the info on this film you would have learned that he uses only wood free elements. So no tree's were "killed" making this video besides...(see other comment)
Joseph Gomes yes I think it's fantastic my comment was just in general we can make all paper from hemp alone there's a lot of things we could make with hemp much stronger than cotton but in no way was I trying to say anything bad about the video
nitpoon ahh okay sorry if I confused your comment. I totally agree. Hemp is like a wonder plant, you can use it for almost everything. There is a company in Germany, I believe, making pre-fab houses using hemp. Amazing stuff, paper, cloth, medicines. Is there really nothing you cannot do with it??
The process of making paper is quite intricate, especially when done by hand. What intrigues you the most about Gangolf Ulbricht's skill?
Dude is too cool. Love this video and wish NatGeo did more like this.

"People love what other people are passionate about"
-lala land-
And I think that quote is true. Idk that handmade papers would be this amazing😍
The emotions and love that you put during the formation of these papers can't be added by the machines made papers .....You are great
This was extremely interesting and I would love to see a longer and more in-depth coverage of the topic.
Does anyone else find it ironic that so much liquid is used in the making of paper despite water being paper’s worst enemy?
Its like paper is made from removing the water, and when water is added it reverts back as he uses recycled paper
Or water like I am your mom I gave you birth and I can also kill.
National Geographic knows how to TH-cam
It’s really inspiring to hear people talk about the things they’re very passionate about. This is a nice video!
I admire his passion
Hand made 😍😍 always always better

As a visual artist I adore handmade papers for my artwork, for precisely the reasons he stated.
You can see the happiness in his eyes, hopefully I'll have that someday.
I made paper in an art class in junior high, it was not even close to the beautiful paper he makes
Maddi The Misfit thats cool so did i yea we used papairus like the Egyptians
Same! My group in my Environmental science class attempted to make paper from recycled paper, and it was a disaster😂
We're so glad you were able to experience making paper, Maddi! Making something yourself tends to help you appreciate the item more.
There’s no doubt Germany is a world leader as a quality paper maker, but this is a whole new (or very old) level.

He's passion really shines through. ❤️
His passion and love... I feel like making paper... Lol ... Very beautiful
I could watch this all day.
never thought that paper can be so interesting
What is the neutral sizing agent? Tried to make paper out of old used paper but it bleeds when writing.
so interesting
Ok thanks
He can make himself enough money to not go broke with that profession 😎👌
That's so cool and looks really fun! Thanks for sharing!
Just beautiful.
I like that his logo is an open-palm hand. _...Rock, _*_Paper,_*_ Scissors._
I made recycled paper in elementary school. It was fun and educational.
Wonderful film !!
I'd rather use old paper like these instead of modern papers, I like medieval stuff
Sergi Al-Kabir same i love the designs and texture
It's satisfying!
Bravo 👏
COOL !!!!!!!!!!!!
This was interesting to watch, good video
Wow you got nice rolling papers 03:39
Einfach Klasse!
Wonderful
I remember , when we were young, we used to tear down slices of banana leaves to write down memo, when we play house ;groceries, like that.
I know this short film is not about cost, but I was curious about how much his paper cost compared to mass-produced paper
Respect
Awesome
Coloque legenda em português por favor.
Its also very common in Brazil for pickers to use these kinds of technique.
Some NGO in Philippines also make these kind of paper
amazing
he is drowning with tons of paperwork's
Regraded as a designer, IT's hella awesome!
Great
WOULD LOVE TO LEARN THE SKILL......
i feel bad for him making Him those papers alone with the machine behind him but it makes him happy

Greetings to all you fabulous Earthlings!
👋👽 Also Happy Friday. 😀 I bring a fat cheese burger with super size fries for everyone. Enjoy! 🍔 🍟
He have something that people did'nt have.......the forgotten skill
Paper from wood means destroying trees. Their must be an alternative solution
4:15 yeah, no.
My friends if you are a fan of goldfinch I welcome you to my channel
Nice
watched the whole video and didn't learn a thing about the process
it is for papermakers - we understand and know the process - he is of the highest level on the lader
I've always wondered how paper is made
Interesting that paper is made with water, but once you finished it you should avoid to expose it to moist
cool
this is one of the influences of the east on the west.
Nice video but i was expecting also to learn the process of making paper via hand.
Without it, it just had 2 min content.
Yeah
This is nothing compared to what kind of jobs the robots will take over.
❤❤❤❤❤❤
noble trade...
Really hard to dissociate the word spoken in German from what it was once used for....
Anyways, great craftsmanship
Cool 🤔🤔
Good vid. But this didn't teach my anything much about the actual process.
why is the german papersymbol a hand, hailing?.. rise again he said
Plz put videos in Hindi dubbed also
I wonder what it smells like in his shop.
ItchyKneeSon you name is awesome
Still machines used

HOW DARE NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC ENCOURAGE PEOPLE TO RECYCLE SHEET MUSIC. RESPECT CLASSICAL MUSIC. >:(
@@matthewliu1421 It may be tattered pages, random pieces of sheet music with sections missing that are used.
first to comment. that is fantastic
This is cool and I can tell he enjoys doing it but it just seems like a waste of time from the outside looking in
you could use that method to fake historic artifacts
pizza time
He need some milk
Stop cutting trees down and use hemp
nitpoon maybe you did'nt see it but he makes all his paper with wood free elements.
