On the day she married Charles, my wife and I watched events on tv, then as we lived in Hampshire we went to Romsey railway station to see them. The crowd cheered everything - a farmer towing a trailer of straw bales, the empty car arriving. When they came out in the car, Diana was my side. I was within 3 feet. The rear window was partially open. In the moment, emotion meant I could not speak. On the day of her furneral I stood as one of the Special Constables and regular Police Officers in Northampton lining the route. We took post at about 10am and she came through around 4.15pm A Police Constable member of the office I worked in was on duty at the gates of Althorp estate. I believe the hearse slightly ran over his foot. Years lster I had Police business with the Estate and an office in the old stable block. With permission I was able to see some of her garments and flowers from those donated at Kensinton Palace in that stable block.
One of the most shocking deaths! Horrible! I'm an American but she was my princess, too. Lovely sweet young lady. She didn't deserve the life she ended up with.
