- hello!! ✨ A lot of you guys requested this, so I really hope my honest experience of A Level Chemistry in the UK can help you out! I massively struggled with Chem (particularly in Year 12!) lending to both having a bad teacher and the difficult conceptual nature of Chem itself! However, with a whole lotttt of hard work, I did somehow get that A* at the end of Year 13! I really hope my experience and A level Chemistry revision tips can help you on your own journey, whether you decide to take Chem or not. 💛 x

It’s so true. I gave up in year 10 and it took so much effort to pull it back together this year.

I totally agree with all the points you shared. Chemistry was the hardest A-level I did and went from getting straight E’s and U’s at the start to getting an A* overall for A2. You just have to put in the work.

Honestly I think A level chemistry is impossible to teach yourself, I’m blessed to have good teachers, but if yours aren’t good PLEASE try to meet up with another teacher and get them to set up a revision club or something because if you don’t understand it you will struggle.
My school only has 2 chemistry teachers at any one time and the teacher I had for GCSE retired at the start of this year so now both of the teachers we have are awful 😭

This is exactly what I needed! With all love, Jade, you are such an inspirational person. Even though I'm not doing A levels (I live in Finland...we don't have those..just have final exams...) all of your A level related videos and lives have helped me SO much with chemistry. And I actually decided to take biology as my 'A level' subject as well (I have about 8 months to go through all the A level content in biology..wish me luck XD). Thank you for your advices!!
Just got a chance to watch this video. I also got so dishearten by getting a low grade, which knocked my confidence with chemistry. Starting year 13 this year, I’m trying to get a better relationship with chemistry and now knowing someone else was able to get from the situation I am in to the situation I want to be in is SO inspiring and made me feel I can do it too, so thank you!

Chemistry has become a hobby for me tbh i love everything about it.
The main thing I’m already worried about with A-level chemistry is the maths side of things. Our first piece of homework was on TOF mass spectrometry and I understand the concept but the maths related questions are baffling me. I went to my old my chemistry teacher for help and he did help clear some things up but because he couldn’t spend too much time with me, as he had a lesson to prepare, I was still confused with a lot of the calculation questions. For every one I didn’t understand I googled it or looked it up in the text book and could not find examples of MOST of these questions. Hopefully, my next chemistry lesson the teacher will go through all those calculation questions or I can go to her at some other point.
abbie yates Don’t stress about it. You’ll use those calculations so often over the next couple years they become second nature. Just keep trying and it’ll click
Mike Hock i’m hoping it does, I’ve never struggled with maths but with chemistry I always found it hard to distinguish between questions. Like you said, hopefully it’ll all start to click.
Hey if you look up tof mass spectrometer on TH-cam there’s a lot of really good videos on how to do the calculations :) it’s not in textbooks so much because it’s new to the specification. Also for any other maths related chemistry stuff you don’t get, look up allery chemistry on TH-cam as well as E rintoul. They pretty much helped me pass AS chem
Yes, i'm in my second year of AQA A level chemistry and struggle with organic especially, and would love to see how you remembered all the mechanisms and how you make flashcards :) .This video was so helpful! thx Jade xxx
Superb advice - realistic as well as encouraging. I think the last 3 letters of chemistry are there for a reason. Keep going because it can be conquered!

I did IB chemistry, and it was the hardest subject and I hated it so much, it drained me and I only just scraped a pass through my own hard work. I had such a bad teacher for both years (same teacher) and I only had one teacher and she just wouldn’t help! She would just give up on the people who were struggling and I found it so hard when nobody would help me! And because it’s IB nobody else knew the spec so I felt stranded and just suffered through trying to teach myself online but with my 5 other subjects and all my coursework’s chemisty just became such a drain that I climbed a huge mountain and only just made it through. Having a good teacher is everything, you need someone who will support you and answer your questions which I wish I had!!!

I have just started 5th year 3 weeks ago so your equivalent to the first year of A levels. I’m studying chemistry with the intention to do veterinary. Like you I have a not so great teacher and many have dropped out. This video really helped, thank you 😊 x

Haha nope!! Quite honestly it’s massively dependent on the time of day I film. This was at night and I don’t have a light in the background, so the lighting contrast creates the bokeh effect. 😉 but thank you!! x

Having a good teacher is soooo true, I finished my GCSE's last year and we had an excellent physics teacher and my interest really grew, and here I am planning to do engineering and sitting for my AS levels next year.
Correction; finished GCSE's this year.
I am Also doing Chem, I am in the situation at the moment, scared for practicals and haven't covered much of the syllabus...Thanks Jade for the motivation.

I struggled with biology this year because of my teacher. As you said, they could be an amazing person but if in class they don't help the students feeling good about the subject, it's soooo easy to give up!!!I was stupid enough to made this happen during the whole year and not searching for help. Because I though that it was a problem that it will be solved some how.And sadly my last test was a D.( but during the year a had 2 C+ and 2 B) So now, my new school year is about to start and I finnaly dediced to search for help. And see that it happend the same thing to you and you got an A star makes me very happy and hopeful! I live in Portugal so the school sistem is different but I'm going to the equivalent of the last year of CGSE.( I'm sorry, my english is HORRIBLE!):)

Hi Jade! Okay, this is a bit awkward for me but I just thought maybe I'd let it out. I'm a Singaporean student taking her A levels in less than two months and tomorrow is the start of my prelims and honestly, I'm scared. I haven't been doing well throughout the past two years especially in maths and chemistry and it is so so painful to keep failing. And with the short time period I have,I really do not know what is in it for me. As you mentioned, A level subjects are waaay more intense than what I perceived it to be man I dont know if im babbling now but to sum it up I feel like Im so so so urgh :( I just feel so lost and as if theres no hope because no matter how many times I try my concepts and everything just blank out during exams. I really dont know anymore :( But thank you for your channel its been amazing. LMao i know this is really awkward Ill just stop here now LOL

I needed this. I started chemistry a term late, just about 2 weeks before Christmas in year 12. I’m now in year 13. I managed to pass my mock with a D. The other day I managed to get my first C! I missed the foundation chapter of my course and it’s just not a good time. I’m just tryingggg

I don’t know if I should switch to doing chemistry very soon at college, I’d be willing to put in lots of work to catch up but I’d have to switch it with eng lit.
I might find it hard, I did get an 8 with only 6 marks off a 9 an gcse hoevwef I was at a grade 5 only a bit before the GCSE’s then I worked hard to go up. Sometimes I find chemicals and especially the maths part quite confusing but it might help me get a job more then eng lit x

This is literally me omg like I got an A* at Chemistry at GSCE and I really enjoyed it and I thought i would be okay at it, (I was more scared about maths bc I got a B but maths is still way better than chem at A level)
I’m so scared that I’m gonna fail chemistry and I don’t know how to bring my grade up I’m getting an E/D occasionally a C. I relapsed that I need to ask straight away if don’t understand but I’m worried that I’m too late to make progress. I start year 13 tomorrow and I’m so so scared

How’d you do ☺️
Top tip: read the textbook before you go to class. Even if you don't understand it, you will familiarise yourself with the terminology and when the teacher explains it it's much more likely to make sense!
I do this and i can't tell you how useful it is!!
I wish I could do this but my teacher jumps between different topics and spends half the time giving us practise questions and if you ask her what we are doing next lesson she doesn't give a straight answer 😂

I only got a C in AS chemistry, but ended up 0.5 % from an A* in A levels, and I'm now doing a Master's degree in chemistry (Just going into my 3rd year). It's all possible! With a-levels it's all about practicing questions in past papers, using chemguide and crashcourse videos. One day chemistry will just click, and it'll be so easy from then on

Good teachers for chemistry are so so important!! It’s the subject I feel is essential to have a really good teacher
totally agree! my year 12 teacher was amazing but my year 13 was really not. So many people in my class went down a few grades from AS to A2.
I wish I could show my teachers this. Only 2 people managed to get a B... and they were top students applying for medicine
Faith wow that’s bad. In my class I got an A* (all down to my own hard work) and then the next highest grade was a B. Most people got lower than that

Sadly, resources weren't as good at A-Level and UnJaded Jade wasn't around when I chose to study Chemistry. I gave up on Chemistry and it gave up on me 😔 I too, had a bad teacher who wasn't supportive at all if you didn't get it first time and even my Biology teacher was unsupportive of me taking Chemistry as he said all the Chemistry I needed would be taught and linked in my Biology classes 😢😩. Still, it all worked out in the end. I studied the course I wanted at Undergrad, went on to do my Masters, took a diversion and worked in Pharmacy for a while to get NHS experience and now I am working in the labs- exactly where I wanted to be 😊 Follow your dreams kids and just know that if everything doesn't go to plan at first, it's not the end of everything, you can and will get to where you want to be, one way or another 👍

I’ve just got into year 13 and ready to do my A2 chemistry. I’d honestly say the best thing about it is working at home trying to solidify content and finally understanding some of the hard stuff, it’s so satisfying and even though difficult, it’s why I enjoyed it so much in year 12. I was targeted a C, and came out with an A! ( which also counts to my overall as I’m in Wales) and that was all down to me putting all the extra effort, going over notes and flash cards again and again, and gritting my teeth and believing it is possible to tackle!! so If anyone is currently feeling down or put off because they don’t get the content straight away, it takes time and a couple of re-reads to understand it:) I loved this honest review Jade!!
I completely agree!! I always found the maths part of chemistry harder, but just doing loads of practice questions and going over things with my teacher managed to get me through it! :) if I can do it, anyone can!!!

I went from F in Physics and Chemistry and E in Maths to A for all 3 (AS Levels), I just kept studying and I changed my revision and study method, no study method found on the internet worked for me, turns out that highlighting and flash cards didn't work at all for me, the perfect method for me is just to read and do exercises, depends on how well your memory is trained, how tired you are when you are studying, there are a lot of factors influencing your ability to learn something new or to revise something. My advice is learn from your own mistakes and be the perfect version of yourselves. Good luck everyone!
Yesss !!! Chemistry is my absolute favourite subject! It just never fails to be interesting and satisfying.... But when you get stuff wrong it can totally rip you apart and give you the biggest doubts XX so proud of you for your very deserved A* ! Xxxxx
Honestly I recommend a level chem to anybody and everybody it's the best thing I have ever studied I loved it so much that I'm doing it an uni

yes yes yes you HAVE to ask for help! I stayed behind with my teacher every week and it made so much difference! You just have to swallow your pride and not be ashamed to admit you're struggling. Your education is worth it. Good luck!
