I think i will combine my box with a custodes combat patrol, the planned admech box (for thallaxi and castellax) an an imperial knight. The idea is a random coalition of imperial forces taken from regiments that no longer exist and fighting together during the last weeks of the siege of terra.
Solar Aux have str 6 weapons that wound marines on 2+ las rifles are amazing they have tons of tanks with brutal 2/3 they can take tanks as troops. Russ tanks can outflank the tanks can hit on 3+ I run these guys a lot. they are a ton of fun and they are very strong
Leman Russ with gravis lascannon don't have 4 shots, is 2, with hull lascannon its 3 shots on BS 3, much better is Vanquisher cannon witch have 2 shots and twinlinked option if you hit with coaxial autocannon (2 shots on BS 3) and addtion lascannon on front hull. Then for just 5 points more you have better anti vehilce punch with more chance to hit, and hitting dreds because vanquisher is brutal 2, so you deal 2 w insted of 1 like lascannon ;) Other thing is plasma companions, don't think this is good idea, first its S7 so you don't instant elites like terminators, second to get AP2 you have to rool 4+, third on 1s to hit you wound youreself with AP4 so you left with inv 5+. much better option is melta (+5 points) but far more better, first you instant everything with T4 (so elites like terminators), second you got AP1 so you take off armor of everyone and everything, third very important you don't kill youre model if score 1s on hitting, four you have very effective weapon for anty vehilce and dreds. 6 plasmagun is worth 4 meltagun, for me melta is way more better in everythig. Plasma is no treat for vehicles or dreds, most vehicles have armor 13 and side 12, plasma do glan on 5+ and penetartion on 6+ and smaller chance to pop up the vehicle becasue you have to roll 4+ to hit to get AP2 and then pray for 6 to blow up something. Melta dont have that issue, you hit na 3+ in 6 inches you have 2 dice for cracing armor and on 5+ you blow up everything. But of course that just my opinion ;) You have done fine material and guide :)
Reborn cohort is definitely one of the standout ones. Command vox + vox interlock means testing on leadership 10, with stubborn, for morale and pinning checks. No transhuman dread here! It’s very slow though; that initiative 1 hurts bad for movement reactions and running. Definitely a good idea to bring transports for units that need to cover any distance.

Question I want to start playing/ collecting Horus heresy and I don’t know where to start I know I want to do either alpha legion or dark angels but I just don’t know what’s a good starting point, do you think it’s a good idea to pick up age of darkness?
I played Solar Auxilia + Custodes allied and Solar Auxilia + Mechanicus allied. Itwas Solar pattern. I found line veletaris in deepstriking arvus later in the game very usefull to grab some key obj. And rule for named Solar Auxilia medic allow you to heal custodes. Apart for this i didn't find any other usefull stuff... Just grab objectives and hope your ally deal enough damage to opponent.
Looking at getting into this as a break/annex to my 40k guard. How does the Lascannon Russ measure up against a Lascannon Carnadon? I really like the Carnadon/Aurox kit
Not sure how I feel about the plasma vets. When you roll a 1 to hit these guys are killing themselves on 2s as they are being doubled out by the weapon at s7 and ap 4 cuts right through their armor.
This box is 2 years too late to the party. Should of been out with the solar book. I still struggle to understand how we still don't have core troops in plastic for all the main armies. I wish they didn't focus on all the low tanks at the start and just done the troops
Bit lost on how to start right now (which seems the point of this content as in 28 years I’ll probably be dead), with what is available now, as you keep referencing veteran plasma gunners as a must have when no such model option exists as yet, and as far as I can ascertain never did even as Forge World resin. Best to advise on working with what we have and is within the art of the possible - it felt more hypothetical and theory crafting as opposed to current practical use.
Unfortunately much of the Heresy range is not available and many weapon options have never been available. Heresy players 3D print or kit bash from other sources, particularly for guns / weapon options. That's the state of the hobby. For plasma guns, the space marine special weapon box is the go to.
2 boxes equates to around 1200 points which is good for a allied detachment which is how I'm starting them until the other kits get released

Hopefully they get a rewrite. As is its a horrible set of rules, completely subpar to spacemarines but also terrible internal balance.
