    I’m so excited. I started my journey on this channel by appreciating the Penguin Clothbound Collection. I judge books by their covers leave me alone.

    In England we pronounce Maurice the same, but also have an anglicised version which is Morris

    Facsimile Editions are my favourite too. There was a suitcase with all these books in it on Amazon.

    How did you find the clothbound translations of Homer, Virgil and Ovid? Were they difficult to read?

    I love how Mara thinks we’re going to be affected by the spelling of ‘Freindship’
    (Goes to a corner and starts sobbing because I can’t unsee the spelling)

      if you go to the amazon listing of the Austen clothbound box set, there are a handful of angry reviewers saying they received a misspelled copy and they want a "fixed" version 🤣 hate to tell them it's purposefully done...

    So. I had to look. Jerome K. Jerome is indeed the author's real name. His father was Jerome C. Jerome. His son? Jerome Jerome. Diseased minds, heredity, etcetera, etcetera. 😃

    So, here's a fun question: What would you say is the ugliest book you have (purely from an aesthetic, visual standpoint) which is nevertheless a great read?

  • @hehehello3251

    Am I the only one that Lowkey wants my books to slightly fade. Like new new newly looking books feel a bit off to me

  • @arlissbunny
    @arlissbunny 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Thank you for doing another one of these! They are among my favorite videos.
    In terms of fading, I do collect books and art and as a result UV is my enemy in general. I’m really careful about where I locate my bookshelves for this reason. One of the things to remember is that the sun changes through the year and some shelves that are perfectly safe most of the year, in my case, get hit in the winter when the sun is in a lower path through the sky. Since I live in an of Victorian & it’s in a historic district, there are limitations as to what I can change about my windows. Fortunately, UV film is both temporary and inexpensive so through the winter the upper portion of two windows get film. It’s simple & it saves my books.
    I had to laugh. I have the facsimile version of The Big Four but I had to get the same edition of The Detection Club you have because that cover is everything. It is often the book I face on that part of my shelves. I do love the facsimile covers for Sparkling Cyanide and Why Didn’t They Ask Evans too. Usually, I go for more artful covers but those three are just too much fun!

    • @bookslikewhoa
      @bookslikewhoa  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Ugh, YES, the sun is my enemy! In my last house, it was such an issue with my main bookcase, but luckily, I don't get any direct sunlight in my current house so it's not been as much of a problem.

    I love watching book collection videos. I'm a long-time subscriber and I totally agree that book collecting and book reading are 2 separate hobbies. I am a minimalist & own 5 or 6 books. I always resell after reading & purchase used as a form of recycling when I cannot find a book I want to read at the library or on Kinde for a reasonable price.

    • @bookslikewhoa
      @bookslikewhoa  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I totally agree! And eReaders are great, I love mine. I'm glad I have it, too, because it has like 2000+ books on there 😹

    • @tfpp1
      @tfpp1 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @verucasalt4535

      @@tfpp1 Hey there! Mistborn (unread), Anna Karenina (unread), Game of Thrones (reread so many times it's falling apart), Wheel of Time books 1 & 2 (unread), Witching Hour by Anne Rice (1/4 finished), Wild Swans by Jung Chang (Loved this book so much, I highly recommend it). All but 1 of my books are 2nd hand.

    There is also an editon of Alice In wonderland that’s connected to the puffin in bloom books. It’s larger and fully illustrated in color but also by Anna Bond (?) who designed the four other. But the Alice one is mich larger. But so pretty. I love it ✨ 💖

    The only penguin clothbound I have is the Picture of Dorian Gray, so not a big sample size, but I’ve had it for several years and read it several times without issue. However I don’t think it would handle ‘rough’ treatment well tbh, I wouldn’t lend it out 😂

    • @bookslikewhoa
      @bookslikewhoa  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm pretty careful NOT to bend, so I probably would be the wrong one to ask :D But if you found one of them that way, it's probably safe to assume they are all like that

    Your previous videos got me hooked on the Agatha Christie special editions from HarperCollins. I have Death on the Nile, Midwinter Murder, and Murder on the Orient Express. I am currently awaiting my newest acquisition from the series: The Adventure of the Christmas Pudding. The eponymous story is one of my favorite Poirot short stories, and so perfectly festive to read around Christmas. I've also been collecting books from the Calla Editions collection by Dover, which is composed of facsimiles of books from the golden age of illustration. The TH-cam channel Beautiful Books introduced me to them, and I cannot stop collecting them, lol. Your clothbound collection is wonderful. I only have the Bronte set in those editions, but they have been great for reading through in my experience too. I only noticed that when I removed the price sticker, some of the finish came away with the glue of the sticker, but other than that, I haven't had trouble with them. Thanks for such a fun video!

    I so appreciate the time and energy you put into this video... and in building your collection! While I have a decent (three bookcases) collection of books overall, I'd like to start building more intentional collections of specific editions or themes in the future. Maybe when I have space for a fourth bookcase :P

    Was waiting for that video 💕 are the clothbounds sorted by publication date or just how you you like? I was trying to guess a system since they aren’t sorted by author or title.
    Anyway I love these collection videos 😊
