- WWI German Mauser Gewehr 98 Butcher Blade Bayonet Restoration. I found this German bayonet in the forest on the battlefield of the First World War. The bayonet was very rusty. I decided to restore it. I removed all the rust and replaced the handle. Bayonet model of 1898. I hope you liked my restoration. I love restoring knives.

One of the best ww1 restorations iv seen, most try to make it look like new which is wrong as that takes away its history, this was very sympathetic and kept its age.

I almost couldn't decide if I like or hate this restoration... I finally decided that I like the way you restored this bayonet. First: it's a bayonet... If you restored it to like-new condition, what use would it be??? Who needs a bayonet in these days & times? Second: I like that you chose to keep the pitting. It's a reflection of all the time it spent in the earth before it was found & restored. I like the way you cold blued the entire item. That protects it from future corrosion & it minimizes the ugliness of the pitting. It would look awful if you had mirror polished the blade. Third: I'm glad that you restored function to the latch that locks the bayonet on to the end of the rifle. That makes a true restoration. 👍
I'm glad you left the pits because it shows the bayonets age.

and guys this is why you don't do electrolysis it rather says rusty they Turing into an sponge.
the best solution is to boil the metal turning the active rust into passive rust(bluing) and scraping off the extent with an copper coin.

I dont know jack about smithing but would it be possible to heat up the blade enough to then scrape those dents out?

Great video, especially because I found this exakt bayonet in my grandpa's basement when we cleaned out his house. Mine is in mich better condition, and I'm playing with the thought of restoring it by myself

I have been restoring weapons for over half a century, and I can tell you that a solution of between 10 and 20 to 1 water to molasses achieves a better result than did you, without effort, acid, and removing metal. Just leave the rusty part immersed in the molasses solution while it ferments ( 1-3 weeks ), agitating it occasionally. You may need to do it a couple of times, but it WORKS.

the definition of restoration.....repair or renovate (a building, work of art, etc.) so as to return it to its ORIGINAL condition. this isn't restoration you cleaned it up you did not restore it.. Don't call it restoration if its not restored.
