Absolutely! One of many frustrations with the movie where they just make Valjean far too much a white knight early on when the whole point is that he's a morally gray conflicted character himself until the very end of the show.
As you alluded to, Valjean is the strongest man in France (somehow) and could definitely kick Javert's ass if he really wanted to haha. And I love Hugh Jackman's performance, but he is so timid and chaste way too early when he oughta be a badass survivor who will do what he needs to do at this point. And they take out the, "If I have to kill you here," stanza and have him jump into the river rather than knock Javert out. It's so lame and cowardly and disingenuous. Sigh, we could go on and on.
There's only one Colm Wilkinson and I get how subsequent actors need to not just do Colm Wilkinson impressions. Still...Valjean should not be an angel in Act I or Act II. He's a badass who only finds salvation at the very end! Let's not overthink things haha!

I love how Javert starts out impersonal and authoritative, like he wants to be, but gets progressively more intense and raw, and after 'I am from the gutter too!' he kind of steps back, seemingly shocked that he actually revealed that part of his past. Makes him very vulnerable and human. Water from the rock. That's how I always interpreted that moment. Fantastic acting from Quast

To be completely fair to Jalvert, the musical tones down the crimes that Valjean committed In the books, he was much more violence. He mugged a young boy and stole gold from him, even after is meeting with the Bishop, but then he thought about what the Bishop had told him, felt remorse, and tried to find the boy to apologize and return the gold, but Jalvert had already been informed of the crime, and his parole had been revoked.
The musical tries it's best ro make it appear that Jalvert is simply an overzealous policeman who can't see the difference between crimes committed for survival and crimes committed out of greed. However, Valjean isn't as innocent in the books as he is in the musical. Yes, he stole the bread to save his famly, but he also became a hardened criminal and mugged people out of greed later on. So, the musical takes a very important part of Valjean's character out, and makes him into an innocent who only turned to crime out of desperation.

    • @duncant6364
      @duncant6364 5 ปีที่แล้ว +240

      IvelLlehctim
As someone who also read the book, I completely agree
But I think the writers of the musical and Victor Hugo has different themes in mind when writing their stories, and that detail of Valjean fits each theme depending on whether or not it is included.
The book is more about redemption, and the saving power of Jesus. All that nice Christian ideology. Thus, Valjean being somewhat despicable before his saving at the Bishop’s hands makes redemption seem even more improbable. Including that, Hugo showed that anyone can be saved. Even the greatest of sinners.
The musical, however, was more focused on government apathy. There are many songs dedicated to showing how the rich and powerful hurry past with no thought for the poor. And the idea of Javert blindly following the law fits that theme perfectly. Take “you would sooner see me dead than see justice done” Here, Valjean accuses Javert of being all-consumed. This fits the Musical’s writers’ meaning well, as it shows the law enforcement to be blind to true justice.
So it’s less the musical skipping parts and people being uneducated on Valjean’s character, and more his character being changed to bring a new meaning to the musical, as opposed to being a copy-print version of the book

I do love the scene they added in the movie version of the musical where Jalvert comes to Valjean to confess that he had false accused him and asks that charges be filed against himself. It went a long way to show that while he was harsh and overzealous in his pursuit of criminals, he was also fair and held even himself to high high moral standards. He was more of an antivillain, a villain with noble intentions.

    • @RavenSutcliffe
      @RavenSutcliffe 4 ปีที่แล้ว +36

@@Leviticus_Prime That's what I truly love about Javert. He's so painfully human because of that; yes, he's an overzealous bigot, but he has the same incredibly rigid moral standards for HIMSELF that he does for everyone else. He's so painfully entrenched in his black-and-white view of the world that when Valjean refusing to murder him and then pleading for Marius's life at the potential cost of his own brings this view into question, he actually goes and kills himself because he can't live with his doubts and his wrongs. He's not a "do as I say not as I do" type character, he's much more complex than that. Even if I could never agree with his morality or his actions, I can still *understand* them, and that's what makes him so fantastic, I think.

The aspect you get from Javert here compared to all others is the sense that he believes himself to be utterly superior to Val Jean rather than just an authority figure. He looks so smug and his tone is like he is speaking down to him. I love it. Other javerts miss the mark by being aggressive and authoritative, but it doesn’t really make sense why someone who is basing their role on authority would kill themselves. Someone who can’t believe an inferior person would be able to show mercy, something he can’t show Val Jean, makes total sense.

I just LOVE that I can actually the scene of the confrontation in my head based on their vocals alone. Like Javert comes in being all smug and authorative, while Valjean is distressed and tries to explain the situation - here Javert has the upper hand. Then Valjean gets pissed and starts yelling that "is a stronger man", and now his voice is the dominant one. And then Javert gets pissed too and they both start yelling at each other, so now they are on the same level. And the performers just stand still! Ugh, Wilkinson and Quast are definitely my favorite Valjean and Javert duo, they complement each other so well!

When Javert says "i am from the gutter too" I can't help but feel like he is so ruthless with the criminals and the poor because there might be a slight part of him that identifies with them, and maybe just a bit of self loathing from having grown up in poverty

    • @Sueb18631
      @Sueb18631 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

It's pretty much the latter. Hugo goes into Javert's past quite a bit in the novel and how it fashioned his outlook. Javert knew that as the child of a convict he would always be outside of society, and as such he could either be a lawbreaker himself or an upholder of the law. He chose the second path and was very strict with himself as far as following the law goes.
That's why he kills himself after letting Valjean go later on after Valjean saves his life at the barricade. He realizes that no matter what he did, it would be wrong. Letting Valjean go was wrong because Valjean was an escaped convict, but arresting him was also wrong because Valjean saved his life. He can't reconcile the conflict in his mind and is driven to throw himself into the Seine to end the mental anguish.

    French Version:
    Javert: Valjean, at last,
    Your sentence you will serve,
    Monsieur le maire,
You will wear the chain you deserve.
Valjean: Before you say another word, Javert,
Before you chain me up like a slave again,
Listen to me! There's a favor I must do.
This woman leaves behind a suffering child,
I have sworn to help her.
In heaven's name, three days are all I need!
Then I'll return, you have my word!
    Then I'll return.
Javert: Your words of a convict!
I've hunted you across the years.
Men like you do not change
    You can never change.
Valjean: Believe of me what you will,
    There's a duty I must do
You know nothing of my life,
All I did was steal some bread
You know nothing of the world,
It is not all black and white.
Nothing will prevent me from doing my duty.
    I am warning you, Javert,
I am stronger than you by far,
I know what I must do,
    If you would oppose me.
    I am warning you, Javert,
If I have to kill you here,
I will do what must be done,
And see my duty through to the end.
Javert: Men like me can never change,
Any more than men like you.
    No, 24601,
I am the one who serves the law,
    You have no rights!
    You are under arrest 24601!
Now your luck has turned around,
Jean Valjean is lost and found!
Dare you talk to me of crime,
And the price you had to pay,
Every man must choose his way,
Every man is born in sin.
    You know nothing of Javert,
I was born inside a cell.
I was raised with scum like you,
I was surrounded by outlaws too.
Valjean: And this I swear by all I hold dear
Javert: You will never escape me again.
Valjean: Cosette will have a father soon.
Javert: Wherever you hide, I will be too.
Valjean: And she will want for nothing.
Both: I swear to you, I will be there!

I just noticed that they cut out the stanza where Valjean says "I am warning you Javert, there is nothing I won't dare, if I have to kill you here, I'll do what must be done" from the movie. This sets him up as a lot harder then he is in the movie. It's the difference between Christian Bale's Batman who won't kill the Joker even after the chaos he's created and Batfleck who has guns and yeah, less said about the Batman who kills the better. Also I like that Wilkinson looks about 60 in this because Jackman doesn't and that's a major part of Valjean's character in the book, he's old but he's ripped and manages to brand himself without wincing to scare Thenardier's goons. It's a lot more scary when you have an old man rip an iron bed apart then a thirty-year-old guy who played Wolverine.
Both versions are awesome though. It's pretty hard to screw this up, even though Crowe's a little off-putting at times.
