Wild, windswept, desolate, yet hauntingly beautiful... the heart of the Yorkshire moors, in the Pennines range, the backbone of England. And long-abandoned in the midst of that vast, rolling, moody expanse, the aged ruin of a remote little farmhouse still sits, guarding its secrets, beneath the protection of two isolated trees. Gawd, what a dramatic setting for one of the greatest Gothic novels ever written. It might have been called Top Withens in real life, and may not have fit the exact description Emily laid out in her classic tale; but without any doubt, in spirit, that IS Wuthering Heights. I can almost sense the specters of Cathy and Heathcliff, hand in hand... blissfully and eternally wandering out on those moors together.
If you take note of things that are said by the characters in the novel, I think there can be no doubt that Top Withins was the inspiration for Wuthering Heights. for example when what can be seen from Thrushcross Grange (Ponden Hall) is discussed: you can see "Penistone Crags" but as mentioned in chapter 12, you can't see Top Withins (Wuthering Heights) from Thrushcross.
A 'Scoping Report' has recently been submitted to build a massive wind farm, 65 turbines, on those fells, by Calder Wind Farm Ltd. It will be as close as 500m of Top Withens.
