Mother Nature has provided everything we need right in front of us, we just have to look.. Good video.
Isn't that the truth? thanks!
Yes, "Mother" Nature. Not people in an office.
@@DumAzzBflo People in an office made this herb? 😂 What are you saying?
Truth
I am 25 years old and I am JUST now learning about all of our beautiful and helpful plants here in Colorado. There is so many different amazing plants out here!! Thank you for the information, I’m going to go explore and find some for myself this weekend (don’t worry I’ll follow the harvesting rule, those bears need it more than I do!)
Also I should add that the intro of this video gave me a profound sense of pride in our wilderness!! LOVE IT HERE.
Excellent, love to hear this!
Never too late. You have 20 years head start on me :)
Old medicine ❤️ I can remember my grandmother and grandfather gathering some❤️
The best!
We dry Osha and store it. Then we boil water and make tea when needed. The osha honey you made looks like a good idea too!!
Excellent!! Comes in handy for sure.
I guess I'm one of the rare people that love the smell of bear root. Like maple and celery to me. I'm heading up today to look for some and some purple clove and yarrow. I had a friend give me a little, but would like to find some for my mom. Getting excited for the fall. I've lived in Colorado almost all my life and haven't seen a moose. We get a herd of deer through our property almost every day.
It's so good! You might see some moose if you head this way. Saw 4 this morning at our house.
@@ColoradoMountainLiving I also made some up in a elderberry syrup and found it very beneficial when I got covid. This video really helped me find it, thanks.
I love it too.
I can’t believe you are trying to dig up a root with a garden spade lol. Just get a pick-axe and the point will go in nicely and loosen the area around the root. That will make retrieving it so much easier🙂
hahha!! Very true.
Osha Root (with Lobelia) is my life. Literally. I suffered severe lung damage many years ago and this with Lobelia keeps my lung clear and manages my asthma and mucous plugs. I have been able to get off my inhaler thanks to this amazing plant. I use one drop micro doses under my tongue (alcohol tincture) and it works amazingly well. I have suggested this to quite a few other people as well and one drop works for them as well, so no need to take a lot. This solves a lot of issues with over harvesting. *Lovage Root is similar. Some claim it can be used in place of Osha but is likely not quite as strong.
Wonderful!!
I’ve been taking it as a tincture for a year , has helped my breathing considerably.
Excellent! Thanks for sharing.
Hello, could you share a bit more of your regime? I have debilitating breathing issues. Thank you Kindly.🧡
A cough syrup was my ingestion. I love cherry flavor Codine. But, Osha cough syrup was better tasting. Now I can eat it straight.

Bear root kept us safe from covid. We have it in abundance where I live.
Wonderful!
How can i buy it?
@@soneyarahman8265 You can't buy it. It won't have the same power if you buy it. It must be gifted to you or you have to harvest it yourself. But, you must know how to harvest it correctly or you will end up with its poisonous cousin Night Shade. You start by beginning a relationship with it. That means you learn all you can about this plant relative. The journey of that relationship should lead you to where you want to be with the relationship.
I also heard this is suppose to help cure lyme desease and that's what I will be using it for
Oh wow.
Oh wow I had no idea. Could u share where I can find more info? Or even your experience with it regarding Lyme? Ty much. 😊
It is deep and powerful medicine for sure. It works especially well mixed with Yerba Mansa and Lobelia in my opinion and experience.
That's pretty cool!! I'm happy you got your beautiful fall (after that snow storm)
I moved from Northern Illinois to Corpus Christi, Tx. I don't get to enjoy fall anymore, which is my absolute favorite season ❤️

It’s such a delightful season and the last 2 years ended too quickly. Very much enjoying the colors and extended warmer temps this year!!

An herbalist in NM sold me medicine made of OSHA. She used vodka to make a tonic. I used it for an reoccurring bleed to nasal mucosa. The med icine worked in one day.
Wow interesting!
@@ColoradoMountainLiving Today I am interested to get more of OSHA without traveling into Colorado without a car. Where online can you purchase the herbs?
Just curious why you wouldnt put that root into a blender or a food processor to make it even more palatable and to absorb even more honey and make it easier to take?
You certainly could use a food processor; it would work better than a blender. My large blade is currently broken on my food processor, or I would have shown that. But, many people do not own one, so a knife and cutting board it make the job more accessible.
wow i'll have to look for this plant on our property may be to late in the year now idk .. i'm sure we got some probably thought it was just another weed geez learning a lot for you ! who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks
Might be hard to find without the leaves, look for fern like plants growing near aspen in the spring, they will have white flowers and the plant smells strong of parsley. Good luck!
Pretty interesting...gonna look into it. Would like to try some
You should! It's worked like a charm for us through many seasons.
I had a grizzly's toothache when the don't run. So I get to a doctor. I put a stick of osha by my toothache to soften as my teeth were loose. I was already used to the flavor. So I need need sweetener with mine though chewing it was more pugnant than putting it in my Oregono tea.
tea sounds nice
This is the stuff we should learn at school. Or at least in some parallel education system like Hogwarts. Maybe there already is something like that. Great video! Thanks! These days I don't have patience to watch videos longer than a minute, but watching this was 15 minutes of Zen.
Thanks so much!

They make pitchforks and similar tools that might work a little better... Could you treat it more like Ginger root and grate it???
A narrow trowel, although lacking in leverage, seemed to work well in getting deep enough in betwixt the root systems. I think it's too ropey, sinewy to shred like ginger which contains much more moisture.
@@ColoradoMountainLiving Well it was a thought...Maybe a hammer! 🤣🤣( Meat tenderizer type)
Lucky you! I am happy to see you have that useful plant with medicinal properties in your homestead. I am at a lower elevation than you at 7,200 ft by Wright’s Mesa near Telluride. Do you suppose I may see the Osha plant in this part of Southwest Colorado? I don’t really know of Aspen trees on my property, I have not seen the place yet.
Perhaps if you find an aspen grove up high enough, I wouldn't rule it out.
Awesome video and stay safe, God bless
Thanks, you too!

After you put the osha root in the honey, how long do you have to let it sit before you use it? And do you swallow the root after chewing it? I have watch and read a lot about osha root and it says chew and get the medicine out and do not swallow. ( I do)
you can eat it right away; the honey just makes it taste better. I just eat it all up!

Awesome. thanks so much.
Hello, do you know how much Osha root is too much to consume? I have some and it works well, i just don't want to overconsume. Thank you.
I'm not sure, best to check with a certified herbalist.
I use it in micro doses. I have never in my life had to take more than one or two drops under my tongue. I use it to manage my severely damaged lungs & asthma. I have a few people who are also managing their asthma with Osha Root and Lobelia and they are micro dosing too; and it works for them (they are off their inhalers too). Most people def take too much.
Great video, thanks! How about at 6000 feet elevation, would it grow there?
Not really sure. Probably depends on the aspen groves
Happy that snow storm went away 😂
Yes! but glad to have the brief moisture.
Can you sell me some, I use to go to this place here in Irving , Texas and buy mines, but for the last year, they don't have any and don't seem like they will be getting any more, I have a root in my mouth as we are speaking, it is helping my throat tremendously with all this mucus
I am currently making up some osha syrup that should be ready by early January. Check our store, I will be listing next week: coloradomountainliving.net/shop All I have is the syrup until next fall.
I would like to buy some dried root if u have for sale?? Ty much in advance.
Go to my website please to order.
How much should u take drop wise from a tincture?
I"m not sure, I'm not an herbalist.
As you know osha root very well, can you help me? I bought osha root on Amazon and made tincture. Now when I put few drops to the glass of warm water it became like milk. Is this normal? Thank your for answer.
I'm sorry, i'm not an herbalist.
Yes. It's from the family of artemisia plants common name is wormwood, when you make a tincture with wormwood it is a powerful hallucinogenic drink -absynth which is brewed with other herbs then filtered through a sieve.turns white on contact with water
I wonder if you could have chopped the small pieces in a coffee grinder.
If you want to save time, I would try a 1HP food processor, like. kitchen aid. I would think a coffee grinder or even a mini food processor would have difficulty getting through these roots.
Have you ever heard of any problems with heart rhythms? A friend brought me some Elderberry syrup with ginger and cinnamon when I was exposed to Covid early this year but after about a week my SVT acted up for the first time in many years so I had to stop using it. So many herbal remedies can impact a tachycardia that it requires care. Just wondering if you or any on here have heard any info on this one.
Anything that has stimulant properties, I would not trust with heart arrhythmias. I can't list all the plant compounds for you here, but I believe it has some bronchodilator properties, which is stimulant action.
@@ColoradoMountainLiving Thank you for that. Kind of what I suspected and thus the question. That was what got me with the earlier mix. Not sure if it was the elderberry or the ginger, but had to quit using it either way. Just using it for a week before the event seemed to boost my immune system and got me through my risky time. But it is playing with fire when you have these things. Thanks again.
Micro dosing sometimes solves this issue. One drop dose (tincture) rule for sensitive folks. Or try homeopathic versions. And have some nervines &/or hawthron and reishi to help counter balance the effects. Arnica homeopathy could help balance that too. Gotta go low and slow with anyone with heart rhythm issues. I find homeopathy is the best approach for really sensitive people.
Will this help with sinus issues. I had brain surgery and they had to go through my nose three times and ever since I have had so much sinus issues and seem to get sick all the time.
It's anti-viral and anti-bacterial, not sure about inflammation of the sinuses.
Did you try it? It is a great sinus remedy.
Let it dry then grind it on a fine cheese grater and mix with honey
Excellent suggestion!
Does Osha tincture have a taste like celery - as some say - or something else ? - is it better in the tincture form or some other way ?
More like parsley/licorice combo flavor. It's much better tasting than bitter tinctures. I think tincture is most concentrated.
@@ColoradoMountainLiving - I have tincture - taste like celery - just wondering why - it has been said - some are not what they are suppose to be - so i was just wondering -
also can you just just a piece of the root after its cleaned up without any honey , does it have too cure awhile ugh so many questions i know
I'm sure you can just eat it raw. I have some pieces I preserved in alcohol, but it found it too strong, so that's why i tried honey this year. I also have some chopped pieces in the freezer, just the raw root, so you can do that too. I think it tastes pretty good on its own.
Thanks for the information. I assume you eat it.
Yes, correct
Do you let the honey mix set out or refrigerate? I made up half a jar and am tincturing the rest.
Refrigerate!! Otherwise it will ferment.
@@ColoradoMountainLiving if you're tinctureing would you still peel it or just clean it well and chop for greater surface area?
@@ColoradoMountainLiving also, how long would you let that infuse before enjoying? ...the honey i mean.
Osha is GREAT. But it smells just as terrible. When I had roomates they told me there was a horrible smell eminating from the cabinet. It was just my bag of osha😉 im in denver would you ever trade seeds or cuttings?
LOL it's so strong!! Everything I've read about growing osha says that it's virtually impossible to grow cultivated. That it only grows wild and that's why the plant is rare/endangered. Must be 9K+ elevation and near the aspens; but i could point you to some areas to harvest up in Gilpin for a responsible collection.
@@ColoradoMountainLiving Northern New Mexico has a cultivating business for OSHA, thus does Not only Grow in the Wild.PS, Northern New Mexico is the only place in the country that has a substantial cultivating business for this root.
Have you tried growing it from either seed or plant cutting? What the plant look like as it goes to seed?
it does not grow from seed. it looks like the thumbnail photo, turns yellow
Only grows at elevations above 10,000 ft and in certain conditions.
Have you made a tincture with ETOH?
I did about 2 years ago.
Tastes like celery /parsley to me.
yes it does
Has anyone tried to cultivate this plant? Has anybody studied the growth habits of this plant?
Yes, and it's impossible to cultivate. Take a look on google and you'll see what I mean. that's why it's so rare, you can only harvest it wild grown.

Osha, or Ligusticum porteri, (also called bear root) is an important perennial herb that inhabits the dry, upland meadows and ravines of the Rocky Mountain. The beneficial part of the osha plant is the root, which has long been used for cold, cough, and respiratory ailments. The root contains oils, including camphor, saponins, ferulic acid, terpenes, and phytosterols. Because of the range of mechanisms it has, osha root is, arguably, the best American herb for lung and throat concerns.
Osha Root as Relief for Respiratory Concerns
Osha root can help alleviate breathing concerns in a number of capacities. Osha root helps clear mucus from the sinuses and lungs by increasing expectoration; this relieves congestion and makes breathing easier. Osha root also increases blood circulation to the lungs, which increases dilation during constriction. For this reason, it is of particular interest as a support mechanism for emphysema, pneumonia, asthma, and allergies. The bronchodilating effect is compounded by osha root's ability to help the efficacy of the lungs by increasing oxygen utilization and uptake in the body. It is believed the increased blood oxygenation is facilitated by an increase in gas exchange through the alveoli in the lungs. In simpler terms, osha root helps one to take deeper breaths.
Osha Root for Cold and Flu Symptoms
Osha root is commonly used as a multi-therapy for cold and flu symptoms. The root has demonstrated activity against harmful organisms and, when taken at the onset of cold, may help reduce the window of time in which indications are experienced. Although osha root doesn't have a direct antihistamine action, its effect is similar, and using a root tincture during a histamine flare up can lessen indications of head colds and respiratory ailments. One of the most notable benefits of osha root is its numbing effect, used to help soothe the irritated tissue of a sore throat. It has been an ingredient in cough drops and lozenges and can even be made into a cough syrup that is more effective than echinacea and goldenseal.
Although osha root should not be taken by pregnant or nursing women,
the plant is considered safe and not associated with any negative side effects.
Because the plant is difficult to grow in commercial cultivation environments, it is generally sold as wildcrafted and available in sprays, tinctures, and capsule forms.
Do not use if you are pregnant or breast feeding. It’s unsafe to take Osha Root if you are pregnant as it could trigger menstruation that might cause miscarriage.
High doses of Osha Root taken over extended periods of time may tax the kidneys or liver. Check with your healthcare advisor to see if the use of Osha root is appropriate for your condition, especially if any other pharmaceuticals or phytoceuticals are being taken.
Do not use Osha root with other bronchial dilators.
Side Effects
Osha Root tincture may cause perspiration due to increased circulation. Other than the undesirable effect of excess perspiration or a possibility of an allergy to this plant, there are no known side effects.

With any plant that has healing properties, take what you need and that's it. This plant only grows in the wild and people are over harvesting, making it harder and harder to find.
I hope y’all can keep the trespassers away from these roots
I've seen folks up in the woods harvesting mushrooms; but not noticed anyone this time of year gathering osha. There's plenty in the forest ; they don't need to come onto our property to get it. But you technically aren't allowed to take anything from the forest.

This is heartbreaking to watch. The disrespect for the sacred Osha root. A disrespect to the great spirit who gifted indigenous people with healing from herbs, roots, plants... please educate people on how to honor, give thankfulness, and handle the way you harvest Osha with respect, consideration for over picking, or using it as a commodity.
