Some people have a difficult time with minimalism in music, or in modern dissonant composition. While I've heard some crazy modern music, this particular piece works in a jazz minimal style. The effect is something akin to listening to traffic at a busy intersection with construction going on in the background with rain falling at the same time. Yet, for all the dissonance, it is surprisingly pleasant to listen anyways.
Michiyo Yagi will be performing at Kings Place in London on Saturday 5 March 2011. Playing solo pieces - including the Nick Drake song River Man. Also the jazz saxophonist Evan Parker will join her for some improvisation. Should be fantastic!
improvisation at its best !
