  • Many people were asking me to make a video showing how I remove the rear wheel from my 2014 Victory Cross Country Tour.
    It took a while but here it finally is. I hope you enjoy it.

    This was very helpful. Thank you for including torque specs. I ended up removing the caliper because it was a real fight trying to get the tire back in and lined up. After I got the axle through lining everything up, I backed the axle back out just enough to slide the caliper bracket forward enough to get the caliper back on. Then slid the axle back through and torqued to spec. Hope that helps if anyone else is fighting that caliper.

    Hello man! Great video, thanks!. I see on your video you have on your rear whel one regular tire (look like one car wheel). My cuestions: what i saw it's that ok?, what it's the number of this tire (number/ relation rin it's a 16" of course)?, which it's the driving sensación with this wheel? (sorry for my english, please answer my cuestions, thanks in advance)

    Hello Paul and thanks for the video. I used it when I changed my first tire. Thinking I am going to try dark side on next tire. How close to the stock tire size is the Bridgestone you used? Slightly wider ? Overall rolling circumference same ? Wondering if speedo will be out at all. Thanks

    • @PaulPomerleau
      @PaulPomerleau  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I have never noticed any difference on the speedometer. This is the tire size that everyone on a XC uses, so it must be about the same circumference as the motorcycle tire.

      Good question. It is called "Darksiding", and for me, I actually like the car tire over any motorcycle tire. I find it handles better for my riding style, but it is not for everyone. Lots of videos on Darksiding out there. It is a very interesting and controversial subject.

      The first thing I noticed is how comfortable the ride became with the car tire on it. Also I was able to ride on gravel roads a lot easier. As for handling, I never noticed any difference from a motorcycle tire. Maybe it was just me. For the type of riding I do, it works for me.

    Hey Paul, Wayne here. You probably know more than most on Victory bikes. My 2009 Vic Vision needs a rear shock replaced. It is an air adjustable shock. A little pricey. It no longer holds air pressure and fluid leaked out. Do I have to replace it with another air shock or will any Victory shock work? The Vic site was limited. I know you are very busy with projects, but if you get a chance I would really appreciate your help. It's to the point that safety is now an issue. Thanks Paul.

    • @PaulPomerleau
      @PaulPomerleau  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Wayne, any shock that will fit will work. The air shock is just more comfortable, convenient and easier to adjust for 2-up or something. If you put in a manual one then you will most likely have to leave it at one setting as it would be difficult to access.

    • @PaulPomerleau
      @PaulPomerleau  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah this is the hardest part. Another way you can try is to place the caliper onto the swingarm and tie it down with a tie strap BEFORE you roll the wheel under. Remove your saddlebags and straddle the back fender. Go in from both sides and grab the rim. Since the caliper is at the 7 o'clock position, you are going to have to lift the wheel and place the rotor into the caliper from above (make sure your brake pads are spread apart). If you still can't get it into the caliper you may have to remove the plastic belt guard on the right hand side to give you more room. At this point you may need more hands as while you are holding the wheel in place you must keep it there by either placing a piece of wood under the wheel or having someone lower the bike so the weight of the wheel is not resting on the caliper. Once this is done then it is simply a matter of lining up the axel. Don't forget to cut off the tie strap when done. Hope this helps.

I am going to attempt the tire swap on the rear of my wife's Vegas... which should be the same as the CCT. Do you think it can be done without the boxes you built? Did you go with another car tire again?

    • @PaulPomerleau
      @PaulPomerleau  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Dean, not a lot of tools needed. I used two 15mm wrenches to disconnect the suspension, then I used a 27mm socket on a breaker bar for the axle nut. I used a torque wrench to tighten the axle nut to 65 ft/lbs and suspension linkage to 60 ft/lbs.
      You don't need the boxes to change a tire. I only used them to get the camera and lighting underneath. I'm still on my first car tire after 3 years. Maybe I will put another one on next year.
      Hope it goes well for you. Chat later.

      For the style of riding that I do I love a car tire. I noticed right away how much more comfortable the ride is. I find it better on gravel, sand, paint, rain, it has better stopping and acceleration because of the bigger footprint and it is a run flat tire to boot. For me, I will always have a car tire on the back. But that is just my opinion. A lot of people have told me right to my face how stupid I am, that I am a moron and an idiot for having one on my bike, so be ready for that. I am using a Bridgestone Driveguard 195/55RF16.

      I absolutely love it. I would never go back to a motorcycle tire on the back. But everyone is different. I listened to everyone discuss the pros and cons for about a year before realizing the only way I would know is to try it myself. I was nervous, even a bit scared, but I loved it the moment I first hit the road. All the horror stories did not happen to me. You are going to have to try it yourself to see if you like it, and be ready to go back to a motorcycle tire if you don't. And there is nothing wrong with going back. At least you tried. Good luck.

      Thanks for the quick reply. On the Goldwings I only got about 8-10 k miles on the rear tires. The 1800's were easy but the 1500's, a nightmare. Following your detailed instructions I found it fairly easy on the Vision. I left on the rear boxes which made it much easier. Thanks again Paul for your vids. You are my "go to guy" for help. After I smooth the tread out on my new tire I will be replacing it with the Bridgestone. I did not see any speed sensing device on the Vision rear wheel area so the size won't be a factor. Speed must be picked up from the front wheel. Have a great day.

    Curious about what kind of tire that is. Looks more like a car tire than a bike tire. Will it get better milage?

    • @PaulPomerleau
      @PaulPomerleau  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is a car tire. I heard all the stories about "Darksiding" and decided to see for myself what it is all about. So I tried it. Well, 3 years later and over 37,000 kms I absolutely love it. Bigger footprint means better traction in gravel, sand and such. It's a run flat tire so no more worries about getting a flat. Lasts longer than a motorcycle tire, and handles about the same for my style of riding. But that is just my personal opinion. It's a very controversial issue and I have been called many bad names by others when they notice the tire so I try not to bring it up too much.

    • @PaulPomerleau
      @PaulPomerleau  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is just my opinion and I'm only using a car tire for my own enjoyment. But for me the car tire lasts longer, rides much smoother, has better traction, can run with zero air pressure in emergencies, can be purchased at any automotive store and I noticed no difference while turning. For my style of riding it works very well and I am glad I tried it.

      The manual says that if you spin your wheel 10 turns backwards the belt should slowly make its way to the left, and if you spin it 10 times forward then it should slowly make its way to the right. It should be a slow gradual movement. Jack up the back and sit behind while spinning to watch the belt. Make sure your fingers are not going to get pinched by anything.

    Quick question Paul. I also ride a Victory CCT(2016). I was wondering if you heard about the rear brake line recall issue? I hear some people have been fixing it themselves. My bike is on the recall list but I have yet to be contacted by the company. I will wait to hear from them, but I am not too concerned about it because my engine does not misfire enough to cause a problem. I hate other people working on my bike but if they do contact me I will take all sorts of before/after pictures to see how they are going to re-route the line. If I am not satisfied then I will do it myself. I am keeping an eye on it in the meantime. But to answer your question, absolutely I will do a video on it. I do videos on everything I do... well, almost everything :)

    Hey there, thanks for the help, I already checked your other video about changing my rear brake pads, also very helpful. How has it worked out with that car tire on the back? Is the handling drastically different? Will any motorcycle repair shop be able to mount that tire? Any other advice you could give?

    • @PaulPomerleau
      @PaulPomerleau  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      This is my very first car tire that I have ever used and I was so nervous to take it out for the first time because of what everyone was saying about them and all the stuff that I read. But for me the handling was no different than with a motorcycle tire, and I immediately noticed how smooth the ride was. It also gave better traction over tar-snakes, leaves, gravel, paint, rain... The only downside I found is everyone giving you their vulgar opinions when they see it on your bike, calling you everything in the book right to your face, so I no longer tell anyone I have it on my bike. Anyway I mount my own tires so I have never dealt with mounting issues. My advise to you is to listen to yourself first. Do your research and don't let others scare you. The only way you are going to know if you like it is to try it. Some people don't like it, nothing wrong with that, at least they tried it. Give it a good chance, scrub it in and play around with the pressure until it is right for you. Either way, you will know for yourself if it works for you. Ride safe and have fun.

    • @billzster
      @billzster 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I never had any luck getting a bike shop to mount a car tire on, and it's a pain to find a place! That said, I had 20k miles on my last one before selling it and it looked new. Handling isn't an issue either- the biggest downside is the "experts" who like to tell you how crazy you are for doing it! If I could mount my own I'd slap a car tire on my XR asap. Great video btw.

      The manual tire changer from Harbor Freight combined with my 61 year old body, I am finding it harder to mount the run flat tires because they have stiffer sidewalls, so I think my next one will be a non-run flat tire. It should be easier. I don't know what kind yet. Depends on what is available in my area.

    Paul, I just replaced my tire using this video and and I had so much trouble loosening the nuts that hold the shock absorber and pushrod to the swing arm that I think they were over tightened a great deal last time the tire was replaced. When reassembling, I couldn’t see any way to apply proper torque by tightening the nut as the torque wrench and socket wouldn’t fit, so I tightened the bolt and held the nut with a wrench instead. The bolt broke long before I could reach 60 foot pounds. I have two new bolts, but was wondering if I’m missing something obvious here before I try again. Thanks so much for all that you share. Your videos have saved me a huge amount of money!

    • @PaulPomerleau
      @PaulPomerleau  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am concerned about how the bolt broke. You adjusted the jack until the holes lined up so the bolt passes through easily, attach the nut and held it with a wrench then tightened the bolt with the torque wrench and the bolt snapped?? To me that means the bolt was already cracked or weakened or the torque wrench was not adjusted properly. I would inspect the old bolt for any defects and recheck your torque wrench. The only way to use the torque wrench on the nut in that location is to put a crowsfoot wrench on it at a 90 degree angle so not to throw off the setting. But using the torque wrench on the bolt should work if the pressure is off the bolt. Try it again and let me know. Thanks for watching.

      Paul Pomerleau Ok, I got it torqued correctly with new bolts. I suspect the mechanic used an impact driver last time the tire was replaced and the bolts were weakened as a result. Breaking the two nuts loose was a nightmare. Thanks so much for your quick response!
