Thanks for posting this Daniel! I grew up along the Wasatch front but moved away 20 years ago. Back in the 80s, I used to slope soar from point of the mountain all the time.
Great video. My Hang gliding instructor taught me to always watch your surroundings, water, smoke, trees - you get the idea. They will tell you the wind strength, direction, gusts and wind shadowing from terrain. You could see on your final attempt to get lift from close to the hill, the light bushes were not moving. Pretty good sign that wind strength was gone and lift went with it. Your setup is pretty impressive. I look forward to more of these.
Outstanding Daniel!!! So cool to see you taking FPV to slope soaring and that you are getting into more glider flying. Looking forward to seeing your solar wings.
I would love to visit the United States one day, and maybe meet you :D really enjoying your content, even tho i've never flown an aircraft before! greetings from Germany, Marten
This beeping brings back nice memory of my dad paragliding. If my current wing turns out to glide well I will ask him to try to fly two-seated so I can control the plane from the paraglider, since he knows how to find thermals and slope wind this could go on for quite some time
There is a technique used in gliding that reduces your altitude very quickly. It's call side slipping and it's where you cross the controls so it's the opposite of a coordinated turn. You hold the attitude with a mixture of elevator, aileron and rudder. I've used it before on my Hobbyking ASK-21! It works fantastically well! I'll see if I can find a video on it.
You commented in the video about "odd sink" in the same place there was lift a few minutes before. You where in a thermal, it moved on and left you in sink. Slopes often kick thermals. The surest indication of a thermal on any sunny day is unusual sink. Push through (nose down) the sink and you should find the lift.
I'd really like to see footage from slope soaring Mt. Olympus! That would be amazing. I used to live in that area - I can't think of any parks but you might be able to find a place to takeoff/land along Wasatch Boulevard or up in the Olympus Cove neighborhood. It's kinda tough with 215 right there though.
Hey man, if you go to Esprit Models you'll find top notch gliders for thermaling. I'm poor, going to college on August, so, I can't afford these planes. Yeah, I've never seen a solar powered RC plane on the market yet. Maybe you'll be the first? If that goes well quit school so you can make the big $ on that endeavor. Gosh, I can still hear that ringing noise! Anyways, I liked the video. I did see some hiking trails.
Well done. Got me interested in the plane (a lot) and all the other gear (to varying degrees). I'm in Wyoming, but just over the border from you (yes, the place in SLC Punk). Really nice West-facing hill starts about 100 yards from my house. Liked your video on the Quanum V2s as well. I've ordered the V2s, Fatshark Base(s?), 5ghz transmitter and receiver. What I lack is a DVR and a long range RC setup like the Dragon Link - as well as 2.4 ghz video transmitter and receiver for when I switch video over from 5 ghz. I'll be watching your videos and others to decide what to get for those. Your videos are well done and low-key (relaxing, even) and hold special interest for me because I live so close and usually have very similar flying conditions. Question: Have you found you can use an inch-larger props than the folks at sea level? I've found on my tricopter that I can go from 8x4.5s to 9x4.7s and get the same performance and motor loads as the people using 8x4.5s at lower altitudes. It actually doesn't fully make up for the less dense air, even on paper, as I fly at 6800 ft ground level (11.4 psi average atmospheric pressure compared to 14.65 at sea level). Not going to push it any further as less dense air is also less effective at cooling electrical things like motors and ESCs. I've typed too much. Just meant to say "good job."
rctestflight Nice flying Daniel...MyGeekShow is also building a solar powered glider...Your probably aware of Solar Impulse...There flying a solar powered plane around the world right now...How about a sneak peak at your solar glider??? Please?
when youre doing the firmware update on the OSD, can you make a video of it? ive heared there is some soldering and some spesific software you need to use to update it.
If anyone is interested kapteinkuk has put up diy variometer on rcgroups. Its just a ardunio and air pressure sensor and few resistors, works well and does the same job (and is cheap). Although last few thermals I caught were just watching apm/osd and had no dedicated vario

***** 900MHz can penetrate objects better than on 1.2. 5.8 is what's pretty useless if you want to fly behind things. The only problem with 900mhz is that the antenna's are HUGE, and it's illegal in most of europe.
Daniel, your older content is gold. Really enjoyed this one. Take care

can we get a quick vid of the solar powered plane?
like an update or a sneak peak
***** YEAH im really interested in this, mygeekshow is going to build something like this too and i want to know how hard it is
I would love to visit the United States one day, and maybe meet you :D

Nice man :) I wish I had hills like that over here :)
Very enjoyable video again!
Cheers
Very nice video Daniel, looking forward to learn more about your solar powered model!
Cheers!
Will be very exciting to see the new plane your building .... thoroughly enjoyed this flight...exciting performance. Solar plane want to see it fly.

Man, I can't wait to see your new projects. Mainly the solar powered plane. Keep it up, Daniel.
... nice flight :-) ... you inspire me to do this with my Bixler next time maybe ;-)
Nice flight and very professional video ! I have to think of setup like that for my Bixler 2 ! :)

Do you know what's so funny? ... I turned HD quality preparing to enjoy the fpv video XD
A solar glider? That's worth a subscription.
I did some unpowered slope soaring with the Bixler as well not long ago. It glides pretty well, even in fairly light conditions.
Love to watch your Videos! They're just great! Keep going on please! Cheers!!!!

Sweet! Looking forward to camera reviews, I really want a gopro but I just don't have the money right now.
Great video! Supriced that you didn't get more lift...
Great flight! Really interested in the solar plane

"They're held in by toothpicks" lol sounds reliable
Pretty amazing performance.
Now imagine this with a less draggy plane.

you make great entertaining videos.. keep em coming :-)
Definitely go with the HD camera view for the video. The video got dramatically better with the HD camera and the nose shot of the plane...
We can hear the vario, love your vids.
If you ever come to Denmark you are invited to come fly with me :)
Love your videos
Wow! Pretty cool.
Nice! welcome back again, love the narrated fpv videoas as i commented u before, adios!
thanks for your videos Daniel, can you comment on how much output power you are getting from the solar wings?
I'm shocked, instead of the standard "thanks for watching, bye" we got an "Adios" Truly, this is a new evolution in rctestflight. lol
Great stuff man,,,, appreciate it!
rctestflight Nice flying Daniel...MyGeekShow is also building a solar powered glider...Your probably aware of Solar Impulse...There flying a solar powered plane around the world right now...How about a sneak peak at your solar glider??? Please?
COOL VID
Let's get Daniel to 50k!!!!
when youre doing the firmware update on the OSD, can you make a video of it? ive heared there is some soldering and some spesific software you need to use to update it.
Biller 2? (sorry, description error ocd...)
Great vid! WOWa! and hello, you got a 2-3m soaring glider the delivers the best bang for the buck? link please and thanks!!
Oh also, has anyone successfully used a folding prop with the Bixler 2? Or does the regular prop create so little drag it isn't worth worrying about?
I could hear the variometer...
Also you misspelled "Bixler" in the description.
YOU DO NOT HAVE A PROBLEM WITH MOTOR, BUT WITH ESC - SET THE TIMING TO FAST
Thanks that was amazing
I didn't quite catch what video transmitter you had....?
If anyone is interested kapteinkuk has put up diy variometer on rcgroups. Its just a ardunio and air pressure sensor and few resistors, works well and does the same job (and is cheap). Although last few thermals I caught were just watching apm/osd and had no dedicated vario
Same struggles as a paraglider :)
I just bought the L1D variometer.
Glenn Doney For those considering purchasing, the thorough L1D Variometer Manual is located at www.dronesvision.net/en/index.php?controller=attachment&id_attachment=19 .
I appreciate the inches climbed figure... I can never figure out feet or meters 😉
Awesome!
Is there an altitude limit at which you can fly in your location? In my region it's 450m relative to ground which is really limiting.
Probably a silly question but have you ever flown that far and crashed for what ever reason?
Can you show me how you connected the Mini Osd :) ? , Did you also update the firmware or is it just right out of the box ?
I'd like to see hikers and animals
Lego's for Wings please!
You're in slc? neat.
Bro do you even Lift!
very very cool
Hi, I know this is an old video but what altimeter is that? I can't seem to find a similar one
Sell your small memory cards and replace them with 32gb + ones, there's no getting them mixed up and loosing footage then.
Can you still buy the L1D variometer?
"Hill" in Texas that's called a mountain
Does the HK mini OSD come with the altitude reading or did you have to add that on?
Damn, wrong Bixler.
Which module do u use in our dominators?
Nice
What FPV gear do you use ?
whats your range on a 2.4ghz crosshair?
Check your description
Is 900mhz good for soaring like this?

hello!! that engine mount? thanks
What variometer did you use? Or did you make a DIY variometer?
Lennart van Maarseveen i think he said it was from team black sheep.
Lennart van Maarseveen Yes it's the TBS Variometer
Pavel Lagun Thanks
Freddie B-D thankyou
i would like to buy your v4 4m wing kit
