1:01 how come e5 isn't played? Does it not win a piece? Obviously not seeing as Hikaru didn't play it, but why not? I'm not very good at chess 😅

Ah nope. Doesn't work because after e5, he had knight D to B3, attacking the queen, and queen has no safe moves on the 5 row after knight b3, so it just loses a pawn after the queen moves.

Took me a minute of actually looking at the position and asking myself what I would play as white if i got hit with that move. Also, a simple pawn fork like that will never occur at this high of a level of chess. So if something obvious like that isn't played, I always look for why lol

He dies have queen c7 after knight b3, so I guess it doesn't lose the pawn, but it's still a loss of a tempo for no reason, and knight c3 is actually the top engine move in that position so hikaru definitely knew what he was doing there lol
