  • I made it from Manchester UK to Manchester USA.
If you're bored, here are the tweets:
Tonight I left #QEDcon in Manchester (England, UK) and have begun my epic journey to… Manchester (New Hampshire, USA). #man2man

In my journey from Manchester (UK) to Manchester (USA) I've made it as far as Woking where a bus has failed to exist. #man2man

For everyone in need of Manchester-to-Manchester update: the bus did appear (25 mins late). The M25 motorway is gridlocked. We've detoured.

For those keeping score on Manchester-to-Manchester: train and bus sections are complete. Just boarding the plane now. Final boss: hire car.

I made it! I'm at the very Center of a Manchester Welcome. #manchester2manchester

Manchester USA was every bit as Manchester, and every bit as USA, as I'd hoped. #manchester2manchester

There's also Manchester, Massachusetts, which was renamed in 1989 to be Manchester by the Sea. It's in the North Eastern part of Mass - only a little over an hour from Manchester, New Hampshire

we Germans have many names more than once. One of the most prominent: Frankfurt (Main) [in Hessen (middle)] and Frankfurt (Oder) [in Brandenburg (east)], but also Frankfurt (Markt Taschendorf) [in Bavaria (south)] and Stadt Frankfurt [in Sachsen-Anhalt (slightly in the north)]
But we also have four villages called "Poppenhausen" which fit into a circle of about 80km radius and even two small villages called "Hellingen" (one of which one Poppenhausen is part of) with a distance of 30 km...

Elchi King Wow! I'd heard that there were multiple Frankfurts, but having small towns with the same name is even more interesting.

Aaron Haviland The funny thing about Peru is that it is tiny but dense: it contains a dozen houses, a guy that sells grills, an engine shop, a rehabilitation hospital, a liquid oxygen tank shop, and the local DMV.

Phonetically there should be enough sounds we can make in speech, to come up with a unique name for every place. I guess there are infinite numbers of names available.

    •  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

You can actually just look at the length of the number of cities and generate pronounceable names of the same length, because 21 consonants and 5 vowels is pretty close to 100 possible syllables. Exclude "qa", "qe" "qi", "qo" und something else you dislike and you get exactly 100. A random source tells me there are 4000000 cities, so 7 syllables would be enough. Or 6 plus a leading vowel.

As happens with most of the best things we steal from the UK, we have poor knock-offs.

There is a large group of partnered cities with essentially the same name, mostly in Germany, some in a few other countries, which all translate to "new city" in English. That would be a pretty nerdy tour and a very confusing poster!
